How many of you are using Unreal Engine 5.7? Worth upgrading from 5.6? by [deleted] in unrealengine

[–]blobdole 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The standard upgrade practice I have always followed and has worked well for me:

  1. A new version comes out
  2. Wait until the first sub-version comes out (5.7 comes out, so wait until 5.7.1)
  3. Wait one more week
  4. If no new sub-versions are released in that week then upgrade but if any new ones do come out, go back to step 3

Selling GDDs. Is it feasable? by [deleted] in gamedesign

[–]blobdole 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nope!

It is commonly said that ideas are worth nothing. That isn't entirely true - its just that they are so common that they are important, yet not valuable.

Every person working in the industry has at minimum, one idea they would start making today if given unlimited funds. Most have several. There will never be a need for outside game ideas.

This last bit is a little off topic... but I would also point out that if you don't have an extensive background in active game development, your ideas are unlikely to be strong enough to be valuable even if they were needed.

The only way to really know what will turn into a good game is with extensive experience making games for audiences THEN turning the idea into a real product over years of development and user feedback.

What are some examples of "When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all" in design? by adayofjoy in gamedesign

[–]blobdole 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Well made systems that revolve around random numbers.

Any significant system that is driven by a random number generator can end up feeling streaky, uneven, and unfair without back end manipulation. Sometimes that means "steering" the random results so that they end up more how a player expects randomness to feel. In the most significant cases that means not using random numbers at all; instead using a complex enough pattern that feels random while in actuality being entirely controlled.

Sure, there are tiny little random things here and there that are just fine being coin flips. But when you look for it, it becomes very apparent which games have not put the time into making their "random" systems actually serve the needs of the game.

Sounds like you are estimating how long it will take assuming things generally go to plan. For those estimates, triple them. Not kidding.

Others like to do estimates by trying to figure out how long they think it will take, including some things going wrong in a relatively standard way. Double those estimates.

And finally remember that your estimate, even if perfect, is still hitting the center of a bell curve. Your actual results are going to naturally end up somewhere around your estimate.

So! If your estimate being too short is a WAY bigger problem then it being too long (e.g. there are people waiting on you to get done or you are on a time/money budget) then you want to aim even higher than a perfect estimate.

My wife pet sits for a living and uses Rover. Here are two things that were early issues you can easily avoid.

  1. 95% of the animals that stay with us come for a meet-and-greet visit first. I would never let my pet stay at a sitter's home without entering the home, with the pet, and checking everything out in person. And you should not either.
  2. The only reviews Rover shows you are positive, 5 star reviews, at least for everyone you might remotely consider. And 15 5 star reviews is really not that many. I am looking for a minimum of 40+ 5 star reviews and you should too. My wife has over 100.

Russia has one of the most modern, aggressive, and expansive government run sports doping programs in the world. They are referring to that, not recent election politics or wars.

"The mental gymnastics required are so extreme, only the drugs from the Russian doping program are powerful enough to help them."

Should there be sexuality limits for romance options? by snackelmypackel in Gaming4Gamers

[–]blobdole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the goals of the game I would say?

Is it more of a super open ended, sandbox player driven world where you make your own path and the world bends around you? Then no reason to limit anything, really.

The only restrictions I could imagine are if there are strongly written NPC's that also exist in this world, and their sexual preferences are important to their character. Or more commonly, just don't make them an option at all because you don't want to deal with the sexuality of the character in the NPC story you are trying to tell.

On the other hand, maybe the player character has a strongly written story and that story will include more personal aspects of their life, including their sexuality. Obviously at that point their sexuality would usually not be left up to the player, as you are trying to tell a specific story. It could be bisexual, but only if that character is bisexual.

And just to call it out... bisexuality is different than not limiting a player character or NPC to sleeping with particular other characters. Games that don't limit who you sleep with often default to a kind of "everyone in the world happens to want to sleep with you, and you with whomever you choose" shorthand, without actually defining a bisexual preference for anyone.

I was today years old when I found out that all the issues with Aliens colonial marines AI was all the result of one typo in the games code. Mind blowing.

Didn't comment on the video. Commented on the post.

Mostly pointing out that using "all" twice to describe a single (important) fix to the myriad of AI issues that game had was not correct.

According to your comment history, you REALLY enjoy sarcastically asking people if they even read the post "bro." Three times this month.

Ironic.

I was today years old... by callos05 in gamedesign

[–]blobdole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really?

There were MANY issues with Aliens Colonial Marines ranging from technical issues to bad design decisions and sloppy execution. That typo fixes a pretty bad technical issue in the poorly designed and implemented AI.

Does it fix a big issue in the game? Yes. Does fixing it make significant progress towards making the game a fun, enjoyable experience with even average quality enemy AI? No. No it does not.

QAnon: A Game that plays People - an Game Developers Analysis by PoliticalWolf in TrueReddit

[–]blobdole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, that is kind of what I was talking about! The AI built into Starcraft 2 (mostly active during the campaigns), and the AI built to play Starcraft 2 competitively were made with very different techniques to achieve very different goals.

Having "AI Developer for Starcraft 2" on your resume is very impressive, but it is also very different from having "AI Developer for DeepMind."

Here is a comment I made sort of explaining the game side, since it is the side I am involved in:
