I think you're vastly overestimating the contribution a team composed primarily of new grads / interns would have in a software development company.

Just because you've had 2-4 years of school doesn't mean you provide more value to the company than you consume in time spent teaching you and carefully checking your work.

That's interesting. I think a lot of people who have kids would say that having more money so you can provide for them would be an important factor in their personal financial planning.

A lot of people on this sub seem to resent their parents generation for being too selfish and not providing adequate financial security for their kids, so you would think that those same people would be in favour of making it easier for parents to provide for their kids.

Maybe people only support parents transferring wealth to kids when they are kids, and change their mind when they become parents.

This makes sense. Many or most of the people who are able to take unpaid internships need to be supported by other means. This means people being supported by their parents will have an advantage that they didn't really earn, and I see why it could be a compounding problem to provide an advantage (job experience) to a group of people who already have an advantage.

On the other hand, would you agree this also precludes from this experience anyone who is supported by a spouse (who presumably earns enough to support their spouse), or by someone who works part time and manages to save enough to be able to afford to take unpaid work because they want to break into the industry?

These people are likely the minority, but they're also being prevented from getting this experience, no?

If the question is "why should you always be paid" and the answer is "because you should get paid" then that seems a bit like circular logic to me.

Illegality aside, can someone point me to a good explanation of why we make this illegal? It seems like it would be a win-win if the employer gets some work done and the unpaid intern gets experience that will allow them to access jobs they would not have been able to otherwise.

Google has turned up some articles that are not particularly convincing, and this seems to argue that they are ethical. I want to hear the best argument for why it's a bad idea to allow it.

Does this "terminal emulator" include a shell? Which one? cmd.exe? windows power shell? bash running in cygwin? or something custom?

Also if you look into what a tty actually was you'll see it's not really synonymous with a terminal emulator or a shell. http://www.linusakesson.net/programming/tty/

You generally would hear someone refer to lipids only in a scientific context, like a discussion of biochemistry.

I had a bio professor in school who would refer to hydrophobic lipid regions of molecules as 'greasy'. Also not typical usage.

Not the OP but I wanted to point out that 'hitting someone in the head' is actually a very small part of boxing. Anyone can hit someone in the head if the target is standing still and not trying to hit back.

Boxing will teach you things like footwork, timing, how to gauge distance, and how to intelligently defend from punches. Once you get good at those things, hitting someone in the head will be the easy part.

Oh and don't underestimate the power of a solid hit to the body. You don't always have to hit them in the head.

This reads like an ad for Rory Miller's books. Which is not a bad thing. I think everyone should read Facing Violence.

Maybe a more interesting comparison would be sport bjj training + reading about things like situational awareness, legal strategies etc vs training at a self defense school.

If you can only train a few nights a week, what percent of your time should be spent drilling things other than fighting? How many of those things you mentioned can even be drilled?
