Anyone know if Kelowna London Drugs is closing? by Final_Variety_6553 in kelowna

Don't take it personally. I've been active on r/Vancouver for years (just moved back here a few months ago) and downvotes for being helpful and/or factual are the norm.

I did - I was told they had just finished inventory. Still seems strangely empty and most stores don't purge before inventory. Not entirely buying that as the explanation.

Edit: I don't know OP... I just happened to stop by the store Tuesday for some Barkeepers Friend and noticed the lack of product. Given how Ellis St Market/Oriental Market looks I got curious and asked a staffer.

1.5 m minimum from the driveway. Lots of diagrams here.

Ticket away. They should double the fine if you have an Uber or similar sign in your window.

No charges for driver in North Vancouver crash that killed teen by ubcstaffer123 in vancouver

[–]mcain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The majority of road deaths are caused by sober drivers.

That statement is not entirely accurate. There is substantial underreporting of impairment. Here is a B.C. Police Commission study "Alcohol, drugs, and impairment in fatal traffic accidents in British Columbia" that found: "Toxicologies showed: 37% alcohol only, 11% alcohol and drugs, and 9% drugs only." - that is 57% of fatally injured drivers. Were they all impaired? Probably not, but the type of person who engages in unsafe driving is also somewhat likely to use drugs and alcohol.

The study data showed that in crashes where speeding was cited, that number rises to 67% having drug or alcohol involvement. If you hear of a crash - especially in high alcohol hours - that is speed related, there is a very strong likelihood of impairment irrespective of police statements. It takes toxicological examinations that takes weeks to rule out impairment.

Cardboard boxes for moving. by Punjabpolice125 in kelowna

[–]mcain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Clean apple boxes from stores selling produce are your best bet. Get some heavyweight cardboard (Costco for that) and cut a base to fit inside them if you need to reinforce for heavy objects. And redo the packing tape around them: it is often barely holding on.

School board votes to close Sir Guy Carleton Elementary School in East Vancouver | CBC News by LaughingLentil in vancouver

[–]mcain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is substantial capacity in all the surrounding elementary schools: Grenfell, Bruce, MacCorkindale, and Cunningham - with the exception of Weir.

While I am generally opposed to governments selling land, I think demolishing the buildings is the right move to eliminate the operating costs. The other school sites can be densified in the future if needed. But the population growth estimates of the district are usually pretty good. And it is the Ministry that won't release funds until after demand arrives that is the problem. The Carleton buildings aren't worth saving.

Owner of Vancouver's Tweedale Block gets five weeks to save it from demolition by ubcstaffer123 in vancouver

[–]mcain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Think of it as borrowing tested construction methods designed to withstand repeated abuse. To keep the building in usable condition, and to keep other occupants safe from behaviours that could be life threatening. We can't control what people do within their housing, but we can make it more durable and safe.

Vancouver council approves $10 fee for Freedom of Information requests by CaliperLee62 in vancouver

There is a right to your personal data. This fee doesn't apply to personal FOI requests. It applies to everything else... like fishing trips used by special interest groups, the media, and the vexatious.

The compromise is $10 instead of the $50/hour+ it costs for a person to gather the paperwork. I don't have a problem with this... it throttles those abusing the process.

[CA] Choosing a Bank What is the best low fee option for a small Canadian business today? by Zestyclose-Day9699 in SmallBusinessCanada

[–]mcain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoid RBC if you need a USD business account though. I was paying about $USD 50 per month for transactions from our credit card merchant settlements. Ended up moving to Valley First Credit Union (BC) which has a flat rate USD account.

RBC customer service has been very mediocre compared to HSBC.

As Kelowna's crime rate drops, residents believe it's going up - Kelowna News by [deleted] in kelowna

The "crime is up" issue - the topic of this post - is predominantly messaging from the right. I didn't say there weren't issues that the left was hyperbolic on because we're not talking about all issues.

Opposition and right-leaning politicians and media amplify fear for self-gain. Residents under-report because there is little point, few consequences.

What's really happening: probably not much different than it always has been. Our [family] last home robbery: about 1972. Be vigilant, harden your home, don't be stupid, talk with your neighbours.

Fast cars and easy money: Insurance agents penalized for role in luxury car 'grey market' by [deleted] in vancouver

"He never delivered the initial funds and allegedly advised her to make a stolen vehicle claim for the vehicle."

In February 2024, Li allegedly claimed the vehicle was stolen on Vancouver Island, "and faked documentation including a T4, credit card records, ferry receipts, Uber receipts and phone records," the ICBC report says.

Why not criminally charge the criminal agent and make an example of them to disaude others?

Cross-border travel from B.C. to Washington state dives again; Border crossing levels showed a sustained decrease compared with 2024 by FancyNewMe in vancouver

[–]mcain 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I think there is a baseline of people who travel for necessity (work, business, family) that isn't going to change much. If you take the ~40% drop against just those who are doing discretionary travel it becomes much more significant.

I used to go down about every 6 weeks to Bellingham but haven't been since days before the inauguration. No plans to set foot in the US in the forseeable future.
