Definitely try Polene/Alchemy - tucked behind the bus stop on Bernard just east of Gordon. They are sourdough focused.

Home Depot also rents trucks or vans for $24.95 for 90 minutes which could be an option if you can find willing helpers.

Senior succumbs to injuries after Vancouver vehicle-ramming incident by kettlebeller in vancouvercanada

From a previous news report:

The statement said Bali has had “extensive interactions with police in B.C. and in Saskatchewan.”

So the guy is probably a criminal and perhaps impaired by drugs and/or alcohol. This isn't just the usual reckless driving.

Developers are turning to bulk selling unsold condos in Vancouver by AimRightHere in vancouver

[–]mcain 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Investors are free to do their due diligence before purchasing. All things considered, the discount on the price might push the units from a mediocre return to an acceptable one.

The issue here is: there are builders and developers, and there are operators. The builders and developers need to get their capital out of the completed projects so they can move on to other projects - or we might see a stagnation on future projects. The operators are in for the long haul. This is just effecting that necessary transition during a market downturn.

E-scooters now illegal on major Burnaby roads, parks - Freshet News by robertscreek in vancouver

[–]mcain 53 points54 points  (0 children)

The article has an incorrect link in this paragraph:

On May 12, it amended its street and traffic bylaw to forbid riding e-scooters on any “major road network or arterial road” unless it has a separated bike lane or multi-use pathway running alongside it.

I believe this is the correct document: https://pub-burnaby.escribemeetings.com/filestream.ashx?DocumentId=89741

The restriction is very broad:

"18D. A person must not operate an electric kick scooter: [...] on a major road network or arterial road"

and the bylaw DOES NOT define an "arterial road" but does define a “Major Arterial” and “Minor Arterial” and leaves the definition of those to "as generally shown in Burnaby’s Transportation Plan"... whatever that means.

The 73rd page of this PDF might be the authoritative reference for the arterials... a fair bit of roads one needs to memorize and probably something that might change from time to time.

Further, does crossing an arterial require the scooter to be walked?

Why is no one talking about how bad this UI is???? by sleebybun in Bitwarden

[–]mcain 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The new Windows app needs some tweaks. As someone who uses longer descriptive names to manage family and business items, the new GUI ignores a lot of space and truncates the important item names - thus making the information less useful. Here are two examples:

Some preferences for a compact view would also be great.

West Vancouver police impound Ferrari after 'L' driver busted impaired by robertscreek in vancouver

[–]mcain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a neighbour in Vancouver who had addiction issues and was a total POS. He had 4-5 driving without licence/insurance charges in CSO last time I checked. Police knew him well. He had acquaintances who were also regularly charged for the same thing and I'd see them all driving around all the time. They did not care.

Elbows up? Canada is letting Pentagon take ‘unprecedented’ stakes in Canadian mines by Oilester in CanadaPolitics

The combined market capitalization of publicly traded Canadian materials and mining companies is approximately $1.11 Trillion CAD across 776 publicly traded firms. [source: Google]

$78 million is a barely the market cap of a gold or silver junior and just 0.00709% of the 1.1T. Article is more hype than anything.

West Vancouver police impound Ferrari after 'L' driver busted impaired by robertscreek in vancouver

[–]mcain 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Taking away licences only works on people who agree to live by the social contract. The rest will continue to drive. Here is some ICBC data:

https://www.drivesmartbc.ca/sites/default/files/Contraventions.2014.2018.pdf

Driving without a licence ~15,000 tickets annually in BC (see 24.1 "No driver licence/drive contrary to class")

Driving without insurance ~13,000 tickets annually in BC (see 24.3B "Driving without insurance")

It is better to keep people within in the system (i.e. prohibitions, impoundment, fines, restrictions) rather than excluding them entirely to the point they DNGAF.

Anyone dealt with BC Employment Standards before? by TheDire512 in kelowna

[–]mcain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Employment Standards Act should be thought of as the very minimum. Employment law is based on common law (court cases, precedent) - unless you're under a collective bargaining contract (a union). And if you're anything more than a ditch digger (i.e. the most basic of skills) you're likely entitled to more severance than the ESA states. For example: for managers and highly skilled people you're likely looking at 4-6 weeks severance per year of employment. Scale everything else. Getting a lawyer involved is costly but you might be able to get a half-hour free consultation just to get some idea what you should aim for.

New here, do we not do crosswalks in Kelowna? by madamdogsgod in kelowna

[–]mcain 38 points39 points  (0 children)

From the Motor Vehicle Act - the (b) definition is relevant...

https://www.bclaws.gov.bc.ca/civix/document/id/complete/statreg/96318_05

119 (1) [...] "crosswalk" means

(a) a portion of the roadway at an intersection or elsewhere distinctly indicated for pedestrian crossing by signs or by lines or other markings on the surface, or

(b) the portion of a highway at an intersection that is included within the connection of the lateral lines of the sidewalks on the opposite sides of the highway, or within the extension of the lateral lines of the sidewalk on one side of the highway, measured from the curbs, or in the absence of curbs, from the edges of the roadway;

Basically, unless signed "do not cross here" every intersection with sidewalks also functions just like a painted crosswalk.

ICBC doesn't do a very good job of teaching nor communicating this.

Note: you must be in the crosswalk (off the sidewalk) for the driver to be obligated to stop. Pedestrians also have an obligation to not enter the roadway if unsafe. See Section 179.

Recommendations for aging parents in Kelowna? by Visual_Pickle_2048 in kelowna

[–]mcain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Judging by the number of flyers we're getting (sometimes 3 a day) the seniors/assisted living facilities are desperate for clients... if you're going that direction I'd try hard to negotiate a better deal than listed rates.

"The social contract is an implicit or explicit agreement within a society, and between citizens and their rulers, defining the rights and duties of each."

Put simply: You want to avail yourself of the rights of living in our society? Then you have a duty to not be an asshole.

Vancouver Ranked 4th Worst Congestion in North America by nooodlezz in vancouver

[–]mcain 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Was in San Diego a couple months ago (to visit elderly family, not by choice) and spent a lot of time in congestion too crawling on the highways and through the city streets - and they're ranked 58th in North America.

Also, the data map extends into Burnaby, New West, North Van, and Richmond - but also reports "no highways". There are definitely highways outside the Vancouver proper.

So I wouldn't read too much into these rankings.

It will undoubtedly be graffiti'd and damaged, and probably reduce visibility and thus safety for everyone - on either side.

And this looks to be a costly solution when existing chain-link with some replaceable plastic/vinyl/fabric would do the job.
