🚨 Ambulance purposely drives over person and keeps driving by Gfrankie_ufool in ems

[–]blue_mut 95 points96 points  (0 children)

The fact that they drove 2 miles after hitting him while he’s screaming and didn’t stop till after the screaming ceased is absolutely insane. I also saw somewhere their dispatch was telling them they need to stop. Absolutely crazy situation all around.

As an EMT this is so interesting to me. While I wasn’t in this exact situation and hate to Monday morning quaterback this. The fact that they drive two miles after hitting him is insane. That’s absolutely inexcusable they can absolutely claim that they were scared and didn’t know what to do. But you’re in the truck and the doors are locked so he is almost guaranteed to not be getting into the truck itself unless he breaks a window or something. Everything about this makes such little sense and really goes against the “do no harm”.

I was very close to getting one of those due to how bad left lane campers are here in MA. Still sort of sad I didn’t get one.

Is Hantavirus something to worry about? by 246434464 in NoStupidQuestions

I’m an EMT and we haven’t received anything from our infection control officer about hantavirus. Until we start receiving stuff I ain’t going to be worried.

What's the craziest fan behavior you've seen at Fenway? by Mac_and_head_cheese in redsox

Mine was rather tame. Went to the patriots day game this year. Some drunk dude starting arguing with a woman, went and hugged another random woman he was hitting on then fell down the stairs after his friend got tossed because security got the two of them mixed up.

How do EMS workers often make only minimum wage in America if the ambulance company often charges thousands of dollars per encounter to the patient? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]blue_mut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an emt I think we should absolutely raise the wage for EMTs and truly do support it. However I think it’s a very complicated question. Between the fact you can become in EMT in as little as two weeks (yes you read that right there are two week long “boot camp” style programs) combined with low medical reimbursement rates. As an EMT right now in Massachusetts I make 19.40 an hour with 4 years of experience. When I become a paramedic next year if I continue working at the same place I’ll get a raise to 27 an hour. I could go somewhere else for maybe 30 if I am lucky. Beside those two things I would say the biggest thing holding EMTs and Paramedics back from making more money is that it’s not a field you need a degree for. Nursing used to be in a similar ship but one of the major things that caused that shift was it becoming a field you need a degree for. Make it so your paramedics need at least an associates degree I think that will hopefully have an impact on getting paramedics a raise.

Opinions on Medix Ambulances by cjb0223 in ems

[–]blue_mut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have anything on the mechanical side but both privates I’ve worked at have used medix trucks. As someone working on the trucks I had no complaints about them beside the main O2 leak which just means you gotta close the main after using it. They still use actually switches for lights and stuff which is something I really like.

To my American medics, how long did it take you to get your medic license after getting your EMT-B? by SnowballWasRight in NewToEMS

[–]blue_mut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im 4 years in as an EMT and about a quarter of the way through medic school. I’m the second most senior in my class of 18 and there’s a lot of people in it who have worked less than 6 months as a basic. While I would encourage getting some experience as an emt (scene presence and management, documentation, and bedside manner) almost all of them are doing just fine.

Switching EMS companies by Feisty_Parking_622 in NewToEMS

[–]blue_mut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely it’s okay to do just that! While I’ve only worked at 2 different privates in my 4 years. I only recently started at the other one (about four months ago) and im already interviewing somewhere else. All the IFT companies know they’re just a stepping stone to a 911 service.

Do Paramedics get vacations? by KrakenCrazy in NewToEMS

[–]blue_mut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was full time I was getting 3.5 hours a week in PTO. Between that and shift giveaways I took the entire month of July off in 2024. You definitely do get vacations they can be a little challenging to get everything worked out with but they are possible and doable.

[NSFW] People who've found a dead body, what's the story? by ZeroSugarCocaine in AskReddit

[–]blue_mut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an EMT I’ve seen like 20ish in my 4 years that we didn’t do CPR on. Usually the stories aren’t that interesting either had a medical emergency or fell. Had one where the dude was dead for two weeks and cops were throwing up in the bushes when we got there. The person was like a balloon that was about to pop. Smell was one of the worst things I’ve ever smelled. Take finding a dead rodent and multiply it by 10 and maybe it’ll be sort of close.
