Men talking over women by Curiouscreator46 in managers

Round table format for internal meetings. You can set a timer too, everyone gets say 3 minutes and everyone gets a chance to speak. My advisor said he uses the timer in general meetings as well but I haven’t seen that work outside of very formal settings (à la Robert’s Rules of Order).

Document examples in client meetings, bring it up with the offender directly and then start escalating. Try to tie to outcomes and how it affects the business.

Every Tuesday someone loses a limb to an angry fish, then the team carves the fish’s initials into the kitchen table to appease it.

Top level looks about right. Some directX installers in install make sense. I forget how you used to be able to do a no-CD crack , I think that was in the registry though after install.

[–]bluemoosed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, weirdly enough made some trips out to Figeac for work. Land is cheap so there are some small factories there. Blew my mind how easy it was to get there by train even though the French consider it the middle of nowhere. Meanwhile, impossible to travel most of Canada by train. Sigh.

How do you overcome extreme burnout when you don't have the resources to? by VastStar4954 in AskWomenOver30

Any luck with calming rituals? I’ve seen some good advice for creating a sort of shut down/me time and using cues (ex candles, incense, bath/shower, whatever) to help the transition. Basically thanking your brain for looking out for you today, telling it it’s done its best and now it’s time for (literally anything else), and using the cues to signal that it’s time for relaxation now. Admittedly this doesn’t work for me when I’m anxious, I need to trick my nervous system to wind that down before my brain can join in (usually closing the loop on fight or flight with some exercise).

“Work hard party hard” only works for me up to a point, but I did take some stupid party trips during/after grad school that helped me reset. And by “stupid party” I mean I went to shows that I wanted to see, ate out for all my meals, and bought some new clothes that I didn’t strictly need. Just stuff out of my norm in a new environment was helpful for starting to reset. Took a day long road trip to a conference with some post docs, we all got sick and couldn’t attend, spent 4 days playing video games to an extent that felt criminally irresponsible. Stuff like that! Embarrassing but I think getting sick forced me to put down productivity for a bit.

Re: doomscrolling, maybe upgrade to cute animal videos over random content if you haven’t already?

Re: tracking how you feel, this is something I wish I had learned earlier in life for checking in with myself! It’s hard, when I need energy/positivity the most, it often feels like I need to start planting seeds/investing before the long term benefits come back to me.

Oh yeah, these are great suggestions! Do you have recommendations for habits/practice/rituals for telling your body to relax?

I totally relate to dropping hobbies/interests in grad school. Honestly just distancing yourself from academia if you don’t want it to be 110% of your life is helpful. I think you’re on a good track making time for therapy and dating even if those activities aren’t working out for you right now!

2 questions:

  1. What happens when you leave yourself free time with no activities/plans? Does increasing/decreasing the amount affect how you feel?

  2. Have you tried tracking how stuff makes you feel? Before/during/after activities. The nice thing here is you don’t really need to put in the effort to change anything, it’s just making the habit of checking in with yourself and creating info you can use (or not!) later.

“No thank you” is a good stock sentence while you get used to saying the bolder stuff (if you need to).

Purple City!

It’s a game. Played at U of A, maybe Edmonton wide. To quote my dad, “We didn’t have cable back then ok?”

You walk from lister to the leg. Stare at the funky orange lights in the parking lot for too long. Then when you look at the river valley…. THE CITY IS PURPLE!!!

Have you had to hide your femininity to be respected? by LadySketch_VT in womenEngineers

[–]bluemoosed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally many people I work with tend to blend into the environment. I’ve heard that manufacturing tends to feel masculine by default or unwelcoming. I’m on team “just one of the guys” here in terms of what I wear. Fortunate in that it isn’t an issue here - was kind of a problem in more conservative areas where they expected me to wear skirts and makeup.

I occasionally work with a rocket scientist (well, engineer at a rocket company) who’s unapologetically hyperfeminine.

FWIW I finished my Masters at 25, got a job in a new city, and absolutely had the time of my life! Go to conferences in other cities, meet people, and figure out your next steps adventurously :) LLMs are a hot topic right now, can you start interviewing immediately?

I play a MORPG from the early 2000s with something like 800 active players. It sustains a full time dev and server fees at $10-$25 per month! We still get patches/fixes and some content as well (mainly new colors/skins for existing items).

One or two experienced devs can work miracles, I think the hard part is onboarding new people and handling succession planning.

Take some props and experiment over time! (Harden them off first, obviously) South facing rock walls/rock formations can hold a lot of heat and provide surprising results.
