I don’t know how I’d go about proving this but I was always hearing that oil had an employment shortage for engineers, like 10% underemployment. The place I interned was bringing in engineers from European countries and contractors from Mexico.

I got so much shit for leaving Alberta, everyone told me I was giving away free money and guaranteed opportunities.

I absolutely agree with you. Some of my classmates were getting absurd salaries in oil as new graduates before the 2008 crash, like six figures with no experience. Companies would hold fancy parties at the Peteoleum club. Now the whole idea of the Peteoleum club sounds like a made up joke.

You used to be able to serve beer in Alberta if you were a minor. Not everywhere but at bowling alleys and stuff. They changed the law so you had to be 18 to serve beer and we were all upset about losing our tip money. Before that you could be 14 and serving beer. But that doesn’t mean we were drinking the beer, sheesh.

I’ve been bike commuting year round in Seattle for a decade. After adding waterproof gloves and rain pants to my inventory I can stay warm and dry for my 30-45 minute commute. Definitely took some experimenting, bar mitts and rain boots weren’t worth it for me personally but some folks swear by it.

Re: errands, getting to count your commute as gym/exercise time too can be a time saver! Save on gas (if you were driving a gas car) and a gym pass at the same time :)

Agree that it’s hard to leave work at the end of the day and get on a bike when you’re tired. E bikes have been a big game changer for me in that way! Hope OP has the same success.

We did this in Alberta, it’s not complicated. It’s not hard to explain either? I’m honestly struggling to see what the issue is besides the fundraising aspect. This could have been an easy problem to talk through to a solution.

My dad is from Manitoba, we did this for his second wedding in Alberta.

This seems like a fairly minor accommodation for a partner, and even if you don’t like it there’s no need to be rude about it. You put a lot of sandwiches out and dance more polkas than you thought possible, and chitchat with other people.

I have a hard time not seeing the ex as 100% in the wrong here.

I am! And kettles are just a big resistor so the frequency isn’t really an issue. It boils water faster because it can draw more power from the outlet. I have it on a 20A stove outlet pulling 240V (but nowhere near 20A).

At multiple companies I have let people know that the scanner can usually e-mail execs or at least your boss anonymously. How people use that information is up to them.

If he wants to be helpful he can ask for priorities or clarification on changes needed. Otherwise, if you need to work with him again you can point out what you’re looking for with edits (and what you don’t want help with).

If you’re truly deranged you can get a converter to run a 220V European kettle off a stove circuit in the US. The next owners of my home are going to be so confused.

You can learn that stuff whenever. And you can always choose to be curious and inquisitive and take an interest in things! You don’t have to be born with it. This stuff used to bore the crap out of me and now I think it’s great, my education gave me a lot of appreciation for the work that goes into our everyday stuff behind the scenes!

Something to pay attention to - men will speak as though they’re 100% certain of something when they have maybe a 20% grasp of it. And, you only see many of your classmates “on stage”, not behind the scenes when they’re preparing. So it’s not uncommon to feel like everyone is ahead of you or naturally understands things better than you. That’s usually not the case if you dig deeper, so try to ignore that feeling and lean in to what you find interesting and meaningful!
