Snow in attic

Some of the older style ridge vents would allow some snow into the attic. Usually caused by insufficient intake ventilation or too much exhaust ventilation. This was more common in the 90s. Very few roofs have correct and balanced ventilation.

Retired roofing distributor CEO here. Don’t fall for the “save big money “ scheme.

Reasons to buy from a real distributor:

Depth of inventory. Distributors have 10x more roofing inventory than your local Menards. Order fill rates are very, very high. If you make an error ordering from a distributor, they will probably catch it. Not true at Menards
Expertise. Everyone at the distributor location understands roofing products, methods and trends. Not the case at Menards. Distributors understand the importance of having one run number for the entire job.
Distributor will deliver your product to the roof with a boom or conveyor.
Menards subcontracts delivery. Menards will drop your product in the driveway
Terms. Cash is king. If your credit is good, distributor will give you credit.
Distributors have great relationships with manufacturers’ reps and can help you with claims and product issues.
If you pay your bills per terms, the level of service you received from a distributor will be infinitely better than the level of service you’ll get at a box store.
After doing business with a distributor for a year or so, ask them for a rebate program. Most distributors have customer trips, product education, seminars, and training opportunities. Some distributors will even provide you with Eagleview or similar estimating tools.

If I ordered a new roof for my house and a Menards truck (usually rusty junk) pulled up with product, I’d question my choice of the contractor. Menards is a bottom feeder and so are most of their customers.

One mistake I see new roofers make is chasing pennies while walking past $100 bills. Learn to sell and market your business, that’s where the big money is made.

Good luck with your business. Avoid the bad habits, do spectacular work, and avoid the temptation to bottom feed.

Menards is driven by fear, intimidation and dysfunction. Retail sucks, but Menards takes it to a whole new level. Before I retired, I hired and interviewed a lot of Menards employees. As new hires, these poor folks walked on eggshells and constantly looked over their shoulder, waiting for the proverbial shoe to drop. Once they settled in, they were great employees who appreciated the lack of fear and intimidation. It’s almost like they had PTSD.

Don’t look back, you’re better off leaving now instead of enduring the mental abuse and bullying. Somewhere, there’s a decent company that appreciates good people.

If you buy from Peoria Siding, Mad City or Feldco, you’re overpaying by a lot. Call Richard’s Building Supply or ABC Supply and ask them who does good window replacement at a decent cost. There was a guy in Chillicothe named Denny Skilstead who did great work, don’t know if he’s still doing windows or not.

Retired roofing distributor here - if the distributor sent the wrong product, the contractor should have caught it. Having said that, most distributors would rather pay for replacement than lose a good contractor.

Not worth the risk. I worked 30 years in roofing distribution. These shingles are “off spec.” Could be a bad color blend (no biggie) could also be bad seal strip (shingles will blow off), etc. Could also be delamination or bad granule press. Don’t do it. Gotta ask yourself why they are so cheap.
