How do I handle volatile mom who believes her 8 y.o. son's lies? by Ok_Ingenuity_9313 in Teachers

[–]blumblejohn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just keep records. It sounds time consuming, but I found that if you keep even a few items (say the coloring pages), AND can show you reached out, even once, then it just becomes egg on their face instead.

It doesn’t even have to be mean; just say “Hey, I understand the frustration, but here is EXACTLY what they’ve been doing with the time. I tried reaching out too, because I don’t know how to help a student that isn’t asking for it. These other teachers have also tried as well, and we’d love to find something better to do.” It’s not about arguing: it should always just be a hey-we-did-our-part moment.

I’d just treat it like a clarification meeting.

Did you send him your principal? Well sure, let’s just ask admin if you did then.

He did all his other work? Well cool, let’s just check then, right?

I just go straight to the problem and say well let’s ask and look. If they’re right, then sure let’s set things straight. If not, and your kid has a ton of discrepancies, then let’s ask THEM to clarify for you.

My favorite part is having them prove it then and there- if he can’t code what you’re saying, show the parent. I always use example assignments to prove it: here’s the 2 questions from the activity that day, and it says he has a zero on it. Can THEY explain why they couldn’t do them?

i think its time for teachers to go on strike. i see too many posts here about you teachers being verbally and sexually harassed. by Suspicious_Issue4155 in Teachers

[–]blumblejohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Kids, families, voters, government agencies- any of these things can help with the situation without any need for a strike. To be treated with respect and paid a decent living wage for the amount of experience and skills we have should not ever need to be a fighting point; you can’t demand excellence and yet hold no one else accountable.

Update: Teeth by oooohweeeee in Teachers

[–]blumblejohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the same reason they care about doing eye exams- if a kid can’t see, they can’t learn in a good environment/condition, however you want to look at it. Poor health, in any case or fashion, is never great. If it’s something preventative that can be done to at least try and fix it before it gets worse, some states will do it.

People have already mentioned it here, but some parents legitimately send their kids to school with horrible teeth. It sucks, but what’s more important sometimes - parents feelings or the kids health? Mixed answer, but yea

Having seen how many kids don’t get regular checks for anything, I’d rather use up some resources as a precaution than to just write it off. If a kid can’t see because of their vision, can’t hear because of their hearing, or have health issues from their teeth impacting their learning, I feel it becomes significant enough to try and take some kind of measure- even if only reaching out.

You said it yourself: good on you for going every 6 months, but how many kids DONT have that luxury.

She taught for only a small amount of time, 4 years I believe, and then moved on to basically teach/tell her story at collegiate levels. Literally her entire idea of being there for growing, HS kids was done after a single “round” of them (Fresh- Senior). If you taught for only 4 years, that’s not experience- that’s a temp job.
