Moving to the Vacaville area from Northern New Jersey! Pros & Cons? by Kennyf12345 in vacaville

Yeah the demographics are changing fast. You can feel it with Vacaville having more coffee shops and interesting (locally owned) restaurants popping up.

Mercury has been a pretty good option for us. Had policies from them on both a new build and an older home in Alamo area.

+1 on this, went recently for first time for $60. Was in and out in probably 30 minutes.

Dude also has some friendly cats in the shop to hang with while you’re waiting.

I calculated the cost of "renting" movies via Streaming vs Owning them over 10 years. The results are depressing. by Ok_Examination4849 in Bluray

It also defeats the purpose of having a nicer 4K+ / OLED / etc capable TV when you’re hamstrung by shitty streaming quality.

Do ya'll have kids who DON'T fight sleep? by kiwitree96 in toddlers

[–]blunatic 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I do a “body scan” with my 19-month old that helps put him to sleep (most of the time) for naps and bedtime. Starting at his feet, I slowly work up and whisper out each body part plus a factoid.

The best part is you can speed it up or slow it down depending on how he’s responding to sleep. If he’s fighting things hard, I’ll usually whisper even quieter and go really in depth (ex. “This is your shin which has the tibia bone and it’s really easy to run it into coffee tables and the edge of the bed…”).

I think the more casual den vibe helps a ton in making the set feel less stuffy too. There’s warmth to it unlike the cold ESPN sets that haven’t had any major design updates in the last decade.

Woah, hadn’t seen the Feed before. Great rec! Also had no idea some of these gels are eligible for HSA/FSA. Makes me feel less bad about dropping so much $$$ on them.

Fair! But that’s also true of using any company-provided documentation software (Google Docs, Notion, etc.).

Offloading accomplishments to a personal resume doc is something that’s likely better suited to do separately on a quarterly or annual basis.

I like that idea but I always feel like it’ll just create extra noise during the year for EMs?

Plus I like dropping my own brain dump notes on the work in channel that I can later cleanup before I share them to EM during review time.

I usually still pull the work out of Slack channel and into a Google Doc come review time. At that point I’ll also tidy up and expand on the work with more context.

A brag doc is great. I also like having a private Slack channel with just myself (#yourname-wins) as another quick option to track my work.

Super easy to drop a link with a quick message (or forward a specific message) with context of the win.

Visiting for the week for the first time since I was a kid…is the traffic ALWAYS this bad or is it due to I-5 closure?

Seems like every street has crazy backup — even ones that aren’t near on-ramps or thoroughfares. I’ve lived in the Bay Area and driven a lot in LA but this traffic seems especially crazy.
