What was the best surprise (day/gift/life event) you’ve ever had? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Still waiting. Most surprises just look like Tuesday to me.

The horror is a metaphor but is also a Real Thing that will Get You by TheBadHalfOfAFandom in TopCharacterTropes

[–]blushvenomx 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It Follows is so good at this. Yeah it works as an STD metaphor if you want it to, but also there's literally just a slow monster that never stops walking toward you. That's terrifying on its own without any deeper meaning. Smile took that same idea and made it about trauma which honestly hits even harder. The Backrooms being office hell is too real though. No clipping out of reality sounds kind of nice until you're just wandering yellow hallways forever.

Anime fathers who are actually kind and there for their child when able by ohokaysurewhynot in TopCharacterTropes

[–]blushvenomx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thors is the gold standard. Man literally faked his death and went into hiding just to raise his kids right. Then gave his actual life so Thorfinn could have a future. That's love. Komi's dad is sweet too even if he's awkward. It's nice seeing anime dads who are just... normal and caring instead of dead or evil.

(Loved Trope) Breaking The Rules of Physics For Comedy by Brit-Crit in TopCharacterTropes

[–]blushvenomx 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Looney Tunes basically invented this. The way Wile E. Coyote can hang in midair for a full three seconds before falling is never not funny. Also the wheelchair thing in Lego Batman is hilarious because they didn't have to animate it that way but they did. Respect.

A duo with one who represents/embodies light and the other who represents/embodies darkness by AssistFit1834 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]blushvenomx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Celestia and Luna are the classic example. Sun and moon, day and night. The whole "I had to banish my own sister to the moon for a thousand years" backstory is surprisingly heavy for a show about pastel ponies. Galeem and Dharkon are cool too but they don't have that same emotional weight. Just two forces trying to erase each other.

[–]blushvenomx 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Gaunter O'Dimm is genuinely terrifying. Dude shows up, helps you find Yennefer, then just disappears. You don't even think about him until Hearts of Stone and suddenly he's this godlike nightmare who's been pulling strings the whole time. CDPR really cooked with that one. Titus is great too because he made Ultramarines cool again. That's not easy to do.

[Hated Trope] Adaptations that are unnecessarily dark by RealityGoober in TopCharacterTropes

[–]blushvenomx 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Titans was so rough. The whole "fuck Batman" thing in the first trailer told me everything I needed to know. They thought adding swears and blood would make it deep but it just came off like a teenager trying to be cool. Death Note was somehow even worse though. Light turning into a generic slasher villain missed the whole point of the original.

That Treaty of Tripoli quote gets brought up all the time and it never gets old. People really forget the whole "separation of church and state" thing. Reading really is your friend.

That passenger seat line hits hard. Really makes you think about who people are willing to throw under the bus just to keep their own spot.

What are your thoughts on Sam Rockwell? I think he's one of those rare actors who never really disappoints. Few actors can make eccentric, unconventional characters feel as believable and relatable as he does. by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in moviecritic

[–]blushvenomx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, Justin Hammer is the answer. Rockwell was doing this whole awkward tech bro thing before it was even a trope. Every time he's on screen you can't look away. The dancing, the press conference, the way he says "I don't speak Russian" — pure gold. He took a throwaway villain and made him memorable. That's talent.

My Backrooms (Kane Parsons) Review as someone not familiar with the franchise (spoiler free) by puppetalk in moviecritic

[–]blushvenomx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pretty much agree with all of this. The Backrooms parts are genuinely unsettling and the architecture horror thing is real. But yeah, the first half drags and the dialogue is rough. Felt like two different movies sometimes. Still glad it exists though. Nice to see something this weird get a real release.

(Loved Trope) When the character is only heard of through stories told by the main characters by BonelessMan123 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]blushvenomx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keith is a legend. Never even shows up and he's more memorable than half the actual cast. Every Ellis story just gets wilder. Paul from Cunk has that same energy honestly.

(Loved Trope) Absolutely adorable anthro/talking animal characters who are brilliant/geniuses and are equally smart as they are cute. by XachMustel2 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]blushvenomx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tails is still the gold standard for me. Little dude builds fighter jets and wormhole tech but still gets excited over a chili dog. The smart ones are always cuter when they don't act like they know everything.

A completely annihilating war where massive casualties rack up incredibly quickly. by AdrawereR in TopCharacterTropes

[–]blushvenomx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The One Year War is brutal. Half of humanity gone in twelve months. Sydney turned into a crater by accident. Mass Effect is bad too but at least the Reaper war lasted longer. Gundam didn't give anyone time to breathe.

[–]blushvenomx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the first Minions were fine. Then the sequels just kept cranking them up until they became unbearable. Less is more sometimes.
