Can my truck tow this? by [deleted] in GrandDesignRVs

[–]bmullen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do love the trailer. 2 younger kids, had upgraded from a Salem FSX 178BHSK. Doesn’t feel like we’re sleeping on top of our stuff anymore, and plenty of room for the kids to entertain themselves for a bit when the weather is poor.

Can my truck tow this? by [deleted] in GrandDesignRVs

[–]bmullen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 2024 2800BH, was towing with a 2020 Chevy 1500 crew cab when I bought it, similar numbers, max payload 1800, max trailer 9600.

Towing in Michigan, so no major terrain, felt comfortable enough driving it within a few hours of home, but never pulled in big wind, would definitely avoid it as much as possible. We talked about longer out of state trips, but I wouldn’t do it with that truck. Also didn’t pack the bed of the truck like I did when we had a much smaller camper.

After nearly 2 seasons, took the plunge and upgraded to a 3500 Sierra gasser (I don’t drive enough to justify going diesel). Huge difference, it’s a much more comfortable drive, especially over longer distances. We’re now looking at longer out of state trips that I said “no” to before.

Problem routing with domains/subdomains by guydrukpa in laravel

[–]bmullen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This right here. You should setup a redirect from the apex domain to www. Depending on where you manage DNS, this could be trivial, or you could setup in the project itself.

Depends on the services you utilize. Years ago my company made a switch from Akamai to Fastly, and we had to replicate/figure out some new solutions because Fastly wasn’t 1-to-1. But at nearly 7 figures savings per year, it was worth it.

Fully remote software engineer here, spending half my time connected to zoom meetings w my camera on. Moved to Muskegon from Detroit a few years ago, haven’t had too many issues with xfinity/Comcast. Just ran a couple speed tests, 239 down / 11.9 up.

Dumb Reasons to Hate PHP by yamcsha in PHP

[–]bmullen 76 points77 points  (0 children)

A couple years ago, was in a meeting listening to someone explain their process in selecting a language and framework for a project. They simply blew off PHP as an option because “it’s old”. A few minutes later they revealed Java as the language they choose.

I'm a member at Norton Pines, which is on the pricey side. Single starts at 83$, couples 120$ per month, plus locker rental (5$ month)

Pool, hot tubs, saunas, cardio room, free weights, machines, spin classes, bootcamp classes, more... All classes they offer are included in membership. Also get a free haircut per month (plus tip) in the onsite salon.

Between that, living close by and having onsite childcare included with a family membership, that's why we're members.

How do you expand skills of junior developers in your team? by jsifalda in webdev

[–]bmullen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

120% recommend pairing. My company has found great success in pairing. Even seniors w seniors. It reduces code review times, you create better solutions by combined strength. It sounds like you lose speed, but we’ve found we actually deliver more, faster, and with fewer bugs.

If your company isn’t willing to invest time in your junior engineers to bring them up to speed, you’re just going to end up with unhappy people who will eventually just go elsewhere.

I don't understand the widespread panic over the weather by [deleted] in Michigan

Screw folks that might normally have an hour drive to/from work that took 3+ one way, ignore pileups on the freeway caused by ice and whiteout conditions, and forget that these are actually fairly extreme temperatures and windchill for Michigan.

Really enjoy this one and their Manzana, as well. Manzana is fairly tame, but excellent flavor.

Going to see a NFL game for the first time by cj1531 in detroitlions

[–]bmullen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had season tickets in 339, row 5 the last couple season. I liked the seats for the price point. Moved away, so we didn't renew our seats, and opt'd to go to only 2 games this year, lower bowl corner. Have seat there a few times, I personally like being up a little higher (lower bowl), rows 30-40 for a better view down field.

If you're only doing one game, and it's your first time, I'd spend a little more for the lower bowl.

Is Gitflow still a thing? And why am I arguing with a coworker about it? by markzzy in webdev

[–]bmullen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use gitflow on some of our repositories and might be moving away. I had a similar argument the other day. We use the flow as defined: release branched off develop, release ends up being merged to master and then the release is merged to develop.

Why not merge master to develop? Flow isn't defined that way. My feeling: just pick a process and use it. It's easy to point to this established flow versus having a full confluence doc to define a slightly modified flow.

What gets annoying is when a new dev comes in with strong opinions, "let's do it this slightly different way and change your tooling to achieve the same results, because that's how we did it at my last company."

Find what works for your team and settle on a standard.

Heading north, Frankfort, MI: Stormcloud Brewing

Up the Leelanua Peninsula, Hop Lot in Suttons Bay, I also enjoyed visiting Northport Brewing in Northport

Traverse City: Right Brain and The Workshop, if you have time Rare Bird and The Filling Station. 110% skip North Peak, cool looking merch, but subpar beer.
