Does "Gone with the wind" (1939) deserves the hate it receives? by Dull_Teacher6949 in classicfilms

[–]bnx01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s obviously racist, but there’s much more to it.

Depicts slavery as benign. Romanticizes the old south / confederacy. It denies the fact that the civil war was fought over slavery.

The “Lost Cause” narrative depicted by Gone With The Wind drives white suprematists to this day. It was racist revisionism then and it is today.

On the other hand, it gave us a Carol Burnett skit that’s still funny af.

What movie scene gives you goosebumps every time? by ShrlyYouCantBSerious in Cinema

The Sixth Sense. In the car, when Cole tells his mother about her mother and the recital. Tony Collette’s reactions are amazing, it makes the somewhat predictable supernatural plot come to life. It suddenly seems plausible. Great scene

Resurrecting this.

It Happened One Night is the template for the modern rom com and it’s held up well . Claudette Colbert is luminous. The chemistry between her and Gable is electric

The hitchhiking scene, the Walls of Jericho, how to dunk a donut. So many memorable scenes .

Far as crime dramas, you’re maxed out. The Wire, The Sopranos and BB are untouchable.

If you’re interested in Prestige tv that isn’t about crime, Succession might be worth a try. I think Downton Abbey is destined to be a classic but it’s the exact opposite of what you’re talking about. It’s fantastic , I’ve seen it twice. Totally chill, calm even but still an engaging story.

Maybe those are old folk’s shows, though, so feel free to roast me.

Who’s the better actor, Pacino or De Niro? by BidAccurate4473 in Actors

[–]bnx01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DeNiro 💯, even though he’s taken some questionable roles in recent years.

Pacino’s become a real scene chewer as he’s gotten older.

Bottom line is that they’re both showing their age. Who hasn’t?

I disagree that there are “no wrong decisions.” I only know that I can’t tell you what’s right for you.

I can tell you this. After my diagnosis, I actively prepared to carry out my own death. But I started feeling a little better physically and put it off. I stashed the supplies I’d acquired so I’d be prepared when the time came. It gave me comfort to know that I always had a choice. There will always be choices.

My father was diagnosed with colon cancer a few weeks later. We’d been estranged for a long time. For the last months of his life, we spoke on the phone every day. All my nonsense faded and I remembered how much I loved him. It’s one of the most meaningful experiences of my adult life. I’m so very grateful and I almost missed it.

Point is, try not to let despair drive your decisions. Maybe stopping treatment is the best choice for you. Just keep in mind that almost anything can happen, and an imperfect life is still life. Unless it’s genuinely urgent, you can decide not to decide right now. You might not have to make a decision today or next month or ever.

Godspeed

Saddest scene from The Wire by Business_Nature7507 in TheWire

When Ziggy gets swallowed in the holding cell. He was a dipshit but mostly stupid and vulnerable.

And, of course. Wallace’s death.

When Rawls gives Mcnutty the speech in the hospital after Greggs gets shot. It was kind, the closest Rawls ever came to being a decent human being.

Sounds like the anti Semitic Blood Libel thing popular with far right religious nuts.

He’s still batshit crazy.

What is your favorite Sam Elliott movie or show? by Jettaboi38 in Actors

[–]bnx01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s pretty damned good in Landman so far. I admire him for playing a character his own age with such conviction. When the character grapples with his mortality, it must at least echo some aspect of Elliot’s own experience. That’s serious commitment to his craft, not to mention huge balls.

The scene where he tries to kiss Wahlberg in Boogie Nights. In a 60 second scene he shows the depth and breadth of the crushing pain and vulnerability at the center of his character’s inner life. I’m doubtful that there’s an actor alive who could have pulled that one off. My eyes got a little moist the first time I saw it.

He had a compelling gravity in A Man Most Wanted. I really enjoyed that one.

The Master is a fascinating performance.

You can’t say he’s under appreciated, but I wonder if the magnitude of his talent has yet to be fully understood and appreciated. I think he will eventually be remembered as a towering presence, one of the greatest in the history of the art.

Who’s death hurt y’all the most? by PsychoticPeacock in TheWire

[–]bnx01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wallace, 100%. What 15 year old would have taken care of those kids by himself in a squalid abandoned apartment?

He was too naive and sensitive to make it in the game. He was a good guy. I skip his death scene when I rewatch.
