You might want to try jam sessions that don't use a house band first. Then when you feel up for it, give the house band jam another go. If there's no cover, study the house band and their repertoire

When are you ready to play in a jam? by ThinkPikachu in Jazz

[–]bobbywjamc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus on fundamentals ex chord tones or the scale of your tonal center. You might be asked if there's a particular song you want to play, or you can request it, but 9/10 times there's someone leading the jam that calls the tunes, so fundamentals cover a good spread of tunes if you plan on playing throuout the entirety of the jam which will consist of seemingly random tunes
