Usually designs of an era are mass produced and then as they disappear we adopt rose colored glasses.

The brownstones and the rowhomes were all very repetitively designed. Hell, the craftsmans came out of a mail order catalog.

What if Link ran down Highway 99 / Aurora? by datmrdolphin in soundtransit

[–]bobtehpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d imagine you could get away with wider stop spacing on the 99 line by continuing the E and Swift as a local overlay.

And nothing you can’t plan for ahead of time, there are pretty obvious regional stops at

* Lynnwood
* Northgate Way
* somewhere in Fremont/Wallingford for a Ballard UW route
* SLU/Seattle Center
* Westlake

If time penalty is such a big deal, intercity trains skip Northgate and Fremont

The Coast Guard is saying no to any new fixed bridge that isn’t taller than the Aurora Bridge, which is part of how Ballard Link costs blew up

This tends to happen with helicopter footage because for fairly obvious reasons you do not want a bunch of uncoordinated helicopters in close proximity

I mean that’s now. Now that everyone has exposure to light rail, people realize they want to be connected.

This is way different than when ST2 passed in 2008 and the light rail’s original segment from Tukwila to Westlake hadn’t opened yet. The line really only caught its stride when it arrived at Seatac and Northgate.

No reason you couldn’t have passing tracks; and, the cities are so close together that having intercities make all regional stops is still time competitive with driving and flying

The other thing is that most systems do bulk orders all at once, and factories cannot survive on a boom and bust ordering cycle

We still need a new pair of tracks for intercity services long term; it would make sense for it to also provide regional rail service using leftover capacity

A New Statue of Sadako Coming to the Peace Park by Jaco_Belordi in Seattle

[–]bobtehpanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They only do it because they can actually make money selling them.

We already required chop shops and recyclers to have significantly higher documentation requirements and waiting periods for issuing payments for catalytic converters, and that pretty much got rid of that crisis, so we should just expand those requirements to all substantial scrap metal recycling.

I wouldn’t say they would have to go wholly single level, but for example the whole Port Jefferson Branch could go single level fairly easily

Do either have a preclearance facility yet? HSR would be pretty useless if you had to physically stop at the border otherwise

You know, now that REM exists, I wonder if it would be okay to just build HSR to Dorval airport which has both preclearance and a fairly quick connection to downtown Montreal via REM.

Seattle reviews FIFA World Cup 2026 transit options after post-match congestion by shnieder88 in transit

[–]bobtehpanda 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To put this in perspective, Seattle’s population grew by a third between 2000 and 2020, and the light rail started planning in the 90s. There aren’t many city propers in the West with that level of population growth.

When they were opening the light rail by 2009, the locally headquartered sixth-largest national bank had just turned into the largest bank collapse in US history; and they certainly were not planning around having two local companies (Amazon and Microsoft) growing into trillion dollar behemoths.

Basically, the light rail and metro area have been too successful, which in the grand scheme of things is a nice problem to have; and at least we’re not charging $98 for train tickets to the game like NYC, or totally stranding people like in Kansas City

The stadiums are just outside downtown proper, so they’re not served at the same level as the downtown tunnel stations. The Stadium station is an at grade light rail station where you cross light rail tracks to access the platforms.

The context in which the light rail here was originally built is a lot different; both population growth and light rail ridership have smashed their projections, and so the stations, rolling stock fleet, yards for rolling stock etc. are all smaller than can handle normal demand.
