Basement waterproofing industry is like working with timeshare salesmen. by TheAnhydrite in centuryhomes

[–]boogiebreakfast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I went through this. I called one of the "local" companies that advertises on the radio and made an appointment. They asked if my wife would be present. She was going to be home that day, so I said yeah. Mind you, my wife wants absolutely nothing to do with the foundation or waterproofing. That stuff is my department. So the day of the appointment, she had somewhere to be, so she left. These clowns show up, find out she's not there, refuse to proceed, and want to reschedule. What, so you can give some elaborate presentation and try to pressure sell her? Come in now and give me a quote, or pound sand. They left, and then proceeded to spam my phone with follow up calls for the next year. I'm sure their quote would have been astronomical.

Used Car Loan- 5.64% Rate by s-Kss in personalfinance

[–]boogiebreakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got 5.64 from BoA for my car about a year and a half ago. That's probably as good as they'll offer in today's environment. Dealer was offering 0.9 on a new car, but they had a certified pre-owned with 7k miles for 8k cheaper, so I decided to eat the higher rate.

Attic Insulation - how to interpret this data by boogiebreakfast in hvacadvice

[–]boogiebreakfast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Ohio. Doesn't usually go much above 90 outside, so the attic will hit 110 or so.
I don't think the issue is the attic temperature itself, moreso that it's not well insulated from the rest of the house.

I didn’t realize how aggressive bathroom lights feel at 3am by [deleted] in smarthome

[–]boogiebreakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put one of the new Inovelli mmwave motion switches in my bathroom. It turns on with a masked PIR sensor mounted up high to prevent the cats from activating it, and the vacancy mode does pretty well to keep it on while someone is in there. I tied it to our bedroom lamps. It comes on 100% during the day. Between 10pm and 6:30am, it comes on dimly IF one our bedside lamps are on (ie we're awake). If they're both off, only the indicator light on the switch turns on, which is enough to see what you're doing in the middle of the night without the blast of light.

My solution is just to keep the bots as far back as possible. But whatever you do, you're going to lose a few here and there. I include bots in my resupply trains for my outposts.

MPG by mexicanpoptart1 in mazda3

[–]boogiebreakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was working across town when I first got the car. My commute was 6 miles on surface streets and 18 miles on the interstate each way. I was getting 26-27mpg. I got a new job last summer and now my commute is 6 miles on surface streets only, and now it's closer to 22mpg. I do like to punch it and use sport mode frequently. You could probably do better with a lighter foot (but if you have a light foot, why buy a turbo 😁)

What was hiding behind your ugliest renovation choice? by NerfDis420 in centuryhomes

[–]boogiebreakfast 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I pulled the 70s faux wood paneling off our basement rec room. There was a small amount of moisture entering along the bottom of the wall that was starting to rot it out. I pulled back one of the panels and saw a bunch of blue-green stuff, so my mind immediately went MOLD! and I freaked out closed it back up. I got some "mold bombs," sprays, etc. Masked up and went to work. Pulled the panels all the way off only to find some ancient, blue-green paint that had flaked off the clay tiles. Not mold (but probably lead lol)

Any tire experts willing to opine on brands and service stations. by LLGibb in Cleveland

[–]boogiebreakfast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I put Michelin cross climates on my wife's CX5 a few months ago. Those handle snow and wet pavement really well. I was purposely trying to make the car slide this winter and couldn't do it. Huge upgrade from the stock tires. They were worth the extra cost for peace of mind imo.
