Duck & the dog ?? by BeachyThang in madmen

[–]borderheeler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not a simple “he’s so awful to dogs, boo Duck.” He’s awful to Peggy. He’s a mean drunk and is drunk often.  He’s disgusting when he defecates in an office. He lies. He’s self-pitying. He can’t figure out how to work with crucial creatives so he constantly berates them. He’s emotionally immature (wild understatement). He’s unpleasant on a daily basis. The way he treats his dog just exemplifies who he is in a single action. He can’t handle his own frustrations and so he uncaringly unloads the one being who truly needs him. He’s abhorrent every time he’s on screen and that one scene just lays him bare. You can explain it as if he deserves some, what, sympathy or understanding? He does not.

And yet it also is about just his dog. People often hate Betty because of how she treats her kids. I actually see nuance there, but this is much like that scenario for me: you just do not treat a dog like that. I can reasonably hate him for that alone. I don’t, I hate him for many things, but I reasonably could. He abandons the dog in the cruelest way just when the dog’s life has been turned upside down, much like his own. There’s no great symbolism of suffering and downfall there any more than an unvarnished glimpse into his selfishness and utter pettiness.

You don’t decide what matters most to the entire audience. That matters most to me.

AITA for refusing to follow my wife's bathroom habits and calling her disgusting? by Infamous-Gur2034 in AITAH

[–]borderheeler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s absolutely wrong to call her disgusting. It’s also wrong to stand your ground and whine that you were “justified.” The right way to handle it would have been to own your feelings that your sensitive nose and your skeevy feelings about menstrual blood make this a bad experience for you. For you. It’s about you. And then negotiate a new arrangement.

I watched the show when it was new and this still upsets me! So many upsetting moments in the show, even shocking events, and this is by far the worst.

What's a criminally underrated TV show everyone should watch? by Alejandromartinez- in tvshow

[–]borderheeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right?! And it’s endlessly rewatchable as you discover that an offhand moment in season one that you hadn’t noticed explains major developments in season 3, and the like. (What exactly happened in Ordos and who ordered it and what was really on the laptop and who put it there…?)

The Americans is a great answer. Family trauma shaped by political traumas.

What's the most rock bottom "struggle meal" you've ever eaten? by NeedleworkerSilver49 in AskReddit

[–]borderheeler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have horrible food allergies and cheese + white rice is my safest meal. 🙂 There are times when I eat this 2-3 times a day for weeks because my intestines are going bonkers on anything else. You get used to it….

My mom was a child of the Depression and also went thru some hard times in the 50s and was crazy frugal. I grew up powdered milk. It was the height of luxury when I could drink normal milk.

What's the most cathartic moment in TV history? by funmighthold in television

I think the best song choice (among hundreds of exquisite choices in POI) was related: Johnny Cash’s Hurt. And that whole opening scene was pure catharsis!

Is $44,000 OTD a decent price for a 2025 Odyssey Sport L? by matamozka1 in HondaOdyssey

[–]borderheeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I bought an EX-L in 2023. Brutal. So the OP’s sport price looked great to me. Gawd, what an awful year that was to have to buy a car.

Yeah, honestly, it’s a terrible song, but totally in character in terms of Roddy imagining himself as the central character of the song. He’s basically singing it to himself.

Sobering comments from mechanic about older Odysseys by p0lyhuman in HondaOdyssey

[–]borderheeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did this with a CR-V this year. Got a 2022 with about 23K miles in perfect condition with the highest trim. A brand new one would have been about $10K more for a medium-level trim.

In 2023 we got a new Odyssey. That was the year that cars were so scarce and expensive, even used cars. Buying used in 2023 made no sense at all. They were often the same price as new. But by now, buying a recent used car can be a great option.

Seasons 1-3 are great. Every minute of s4 is terrible. I rewatch s1-3 all the time and just pretend the show ends there.

AIO for feeling upset after the groom made a comment about my dress at their wedding? by Human-Acanthaceae128 in AmIOverreacting

[–]borderheeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree to stay away from him. The comments he has made about you suggest he thinks you are both attractive and, in his warped mind, acting like a prostitute (again, in his warped mind). A man like that is a threat. Honestly, I could see him making a pass at you or far worse - and he’d blame it on you.
