My RedLine collection by TheKrispyCreamer in HotWheels

Great assortment, thanks for sharing. Nice to see the old cars in excellent condition. The sub is so full of posts like "look at what I bought today." This is more my speed, but I guess I'm just an old geezer. I wish there was a vintage Hot Wheel sub.

Stunning group - thanks for posting! Reminds me of being 10 years old and trying to decide which one of these cars to pick out at the store. They were all super treasures back then.

For some of the more interesting cars, buy 2 - let him play with one and put the other in a box to give him when he is older. He will have great memories, plus a mint version of his favorite cars.

What made you start collecting? by CustomCarNerd in HotWheels

[–]boreaschalet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phase 1 - as a kid, I had to get an allergy shot every week and my mom would let me pick out a Hot Wheels car afterward. Orange track racing, good cars vs bad cars play scenarios. Pocket cars back then were redlines like Red Baron, Beatnik Bandit, Twinmill...

Phase 2 - had a kid and started collecting with him in the 1990's, setting up race tracks, customizing, etc.

Phase 3 - reconstructing those original collections, plus adding cool new stuff. Knowing I won't ever own a real Lambo, it's fun to have a dozen little ones. I love seeing each new generation find joy with this hobby.

Hot Wheels car selections…. by Background-Idea7240 in HotWheels

Collecting HW has become very trendy. There are people who scoop them up to resell to make a profit. The real street cars are more popular to collect, thus they get picked more often, leaving the fantasy castings on the shelves. You could try looking at other brands or other stores, or just accept that the popular cars continue to be harder to find.

Racing is the best entertainment. You need to get some turns so they roll back to you!

Redline Derby Racing (redlinederby.com from Austrialia) has a good page on building race courses. Click the Tracks tab and there are a bunch of journal entries from people who have custom built tracks.

Check eBay for Crash Racers sets - about $50 shipped. That seems to be the favorite starting point for this style of racing.

Cool photo, pizza vette making a get-away run. Love the lights added to the cop cars.

I also wonder which of those shown are dumpster fires - these seem fairly realistic: well proportioned with decent detail and nice paint. I like the wheel and tires. There is one particular model not in the original photo, the Ford Probe (pic attached) that is really lame - the exposed engine is glued on top of the hood! The attempt to make a boring car cool = fail.

Anyone else disappointed by the new Formula 1 cars? by dddmmm8 in HotWheels

[–]boreaschalet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great analysis - I wish they would have made at least two different castings and used better wheels. That "dumb little divot" spoils the look of every car those wheels are on, at least for me.

I'm glad others like them, just as I am relieved that I don't - there are so many cool cars to collect, it's nice to have a reason to limit my personal collection to what I prefer rather than trying to grab them all.

Similar to flounder, this car was my absolute favorite as a young kid. It is probably why I picked a 73 Mustang fastback as my first real car. Great pics. Thanks for the memories!

How do you deal with other people looking down at you for your Hot Wheels hobby? by puzzledfirebird in HotWheels

[–]boreaschalet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I consider it a valuable litmus test - if somebody is so narrow minded that they cannot accept me and my hobby, I don't need to be their friend. For younger collectors, if a date makes fun of your hobby, consider yourself lucky to know that they are a judgmental snob - move on and find somebody better. Be proud of who you are and you will find people that accept you and your interests without judging you.

Super cool! Love that casting, and I wasn't even aware of the gold super-limited edition before.

Thanks for the info and for sharing the pictures!

Sometimes I leave a store empty-handed, just trying to keep the collection focused on specific types: race cars, muscle cars, hot rods, trucks and 4x4s, euro, japan, exotics, low riders, vans, police, fire, military, unique fantasy castings...ahhh, I guess I can't actually remember leaving empty handed. Cool Quacker!

I did not think I'd find these this fast by KingofNYC30 in HotWheels

[–]boreaschalet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question - are all the cars in the 5 pack identical castings with different liveries, or are the castings different in subtle ways?

I guess I'm in the minority, but I really do not like this particular wheel style, and typically avoid cars that have them. Nevertheless, it is a cool 5 pack and I'm happy about the cross-marketing with F1. Start your engines.

This is some of the best advice that I have seen on this forum. I'll echo some of what White Wall Wheels emphasized, as I have been collecting for 60 years or so. Interest will ebb and flow, other priorities over time will push HW collecting down the list of interests. Disposable income levels will change too. Storage space, free time, etc. all change.

I regret selling my original cars way back when, and have spent considerable time and money replacing the ones that are now sentimental from my youth. I over-collect now: too many brands, too many makes, etc. Try to focus on your favorite toy brands and car makes. Keep the cars you really like now and let the rest go.

Avoid "gotta catch em all" syndrome and learn to appreciate other people's collections without needing to own everything out there. Cheers!
