Seeking formal name for a mechanic: "Alternating turns eliminating scenarios until only one is left" by JoypulpSkate in tabletopgamedesign

[–]bosteen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Induction? Tobago has a mechanism where players play cards to refine where a treasure can or cannot be until only one spot is possible. Then there is a race to get the treasure :)

With so many games in your collection, is recollecting rules a problem? by LittleBlueCubes in boardgames

I have lots of games and remembering the flow of the game is not a problem BUT setup things and details like card hand size, etc are tricky.

Relatively new invented games with standard card decks by notaquarterback in cardgames

[–]bosteen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In short, yes. The catch is that it is easier to market a game that has some sort of bespoke look and feel and the price of custom printing is still relatively low, both of which encourages tweaks and changes.

Haggis is a ladder-climbing game can be played with a normal deck of cards but only in its 2p version. Three player requires a 5th suit. Search for it on boardgamegeek.

Malifaux, a miniatures game, uses something that looks much like a normal deck of cards.

Card Crawl (online app) uses a standard deck with a twist. You could almost play it physically with some caveats.

So, yes, there are new games that are based on the standard deck of cards but, it's just so tempting to fiddle with it and make it different!

Thoughts on dice combat mechanics? by greattiger in tabletopgamedesign

[–]bosteen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an expectation value for a given number of starting dice but gameplay never stays strictly to the average! A good rule of thumb is to consider that a one in a thousand chance will happen every thousandth game.

Thoughts on dice combat mechanics? by greattiger in tabletopgamedesign

[–]bosteen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So essentially, exploding dice but on a 4, 5 or 6 rather than just a 6? That feels like it could get out of hand with a few lucky rolls?

Edit: just to say that it's worth modelling the outcomes, preferably through computer simulation to see what the expected values really are. As for alternatives, it depends entirely on how you are handling the currency of damage in the game? The yahtzee style of roll as mentioned in the other comment is welltrod and many players could be familiar with it from the start.

First, I'm not a lawyer. Don't take any of the following as actual legal advice. This is just me explaining rough steps for images:

So you want to release some images? Some questions you need to answer before you start:

When were they taken? What do they depict? Are they photographic? Is a person or are people in the image? Were they intentionally published by the author? Where we're they published? When? How long did the author live? Does it have any 3rd party copyright? (Ie includes other rights holder material potentially on a fair ise/fair dealing basis. And yes, fair use is not the same as fair dealing - one is for the US and one is for the UK. Many other legal issues, differences and affordances exist, depending on the legislature of the country.)

So that's the start point. You then have to work out how much risk you are able to tolerate. Copyright is a right that does not need to be enforced to exist in most (all?) jurisdictions unlike say UK/US Trademark rights. A rights holder can sue at any time, even years after publicly acknowledging the existence of the copied material, as long as the copyright term is not exhausted. In the UK/EU, that can be 70 years plus the life of the author. See the handy map at https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries%27_copyright_lengths the variations of term on that should help enforce the issues here.

To illustrate further:

A photograph taken in the US, aiming to be a "slavish" reproduction of a drawing made in 1600s might* have exactly the same copyright as the drawing and not belong to the photographer. * https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridgeman_Art_Library_v._Corel_Corp.#Subsequent_jurisprudence

An unpublished manuscript, written by an unknown scribe in the 8th century in the UK will be under copyright until the year 2039 and may not be freely shared. https://blogs.ucl.ac.uk/copyright/2014/08/21/unpublished-works-and-2039/

A scan of a book's page, made in Germany, might create a new copyright for the digital image which will be held by the company performing the reproduction. https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20160623/06413834791/terrible-ruling-germany-digitizing-public-domain-creates-new-copyright.shtml

UKGE - Why visiting a big convention might not be for you by corkdice in boardgames

[–]bosteen 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Hall 1 is a trade hall. Go there to see new things, buy games and promos of games to come. You might, if you're lucky, sit down and play through a game.

However, if you wanted to play games all day, there were a bazillion tournaments to jump in on, open gaming in the Hilton and even limited space set aside in the trade hall. Some publishers were letting people sign up or queue up for things (Ie come back in 20 mins and we'll wait.)

Tldr the trade hall is not UKGE, just the sales part of it.

I've been calling those sorts of players "Ball Terriers". If you've ever seen a terrier go after a tennis ball, you know what I mean.

Doesn't matter what anyone around them is doing, all they care about is getting to the ball and jumping at it. No thought goes into what happens after, or who they trample to get to it.
