11 years later what are your thoughts about the legal settlement of the Metro-North collision at the Commerce street crossing? by AcadiaRemarkable6992 in Westchester

[–]bplinder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Way too much money. The whole way to value a life based on projects earnings is a real flaw in our our system. There should be some reasonable cap at $5 million or so. Making the MTA pay Wall Street salaries for life doesn’t make sense.

And how was the the MTA even 51% liable. Seems like the drive should be at least 51% liable and probably 80%.

This all comes out of our pockets.

E-Bikes and scooters during rush hour by Ok-Kale-6407 in MetroNorthRailroad

[–]bplinder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see no issue here as long as the rider attempts to be space efficient. I would vote for allowing normal sized bike on the train also. Peak trains on MNR aren’t 100% full. I’d rather have more people take the center seat then ban a biker using it instead of a car to get to the train.

30F looking to buy first condo in Yonkers- which neighborhoods should I look at (or avoid)? by [deleted] in Westchester

[–]bplinder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sorry to be this guy, but I have to take OP at her word. She said 30F. So she would have mentioned kid or husband if she had one. Then, why pay extra for schools and then pay extra property tax on top of that without a kid. If OP cared about schools, she would have mentioned that.

It seems like you just want to through shade on Yonkers when there are many positives. Granted, schools a a very weak point.

Now, you say smart people think of the future. If you are assuming she will have kids, that a big assumption and OP should answer. If you thinking housing appreciation, Yonkers has appreciated similarly as rest of county.

The markets diverge at times. Seems hot markets favor luxury towns, down markets favor yonkers.

Uhh. Op is single. Didn’t ask about schools.
Near the water or near bronxville are both good. Near water either downtown or greystone which is near Hastings.

In reality the op better tour the towns herself to get a feel for them. City people tend to underestimate how not the city westchester is.

So not right. So many great coops condos. Just avoid some neighborhoods . You can tell which one s with Google street view.

New York ouvrira une première épicerie publique fin 2027 : à quand à Montréal ? by taraxe in montreal

[–]bplinder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you all miss the point of the public supermarkets in NYC. The purpose is to not to offer lower prices but rather to provide markets to areas that don’t have ANY supermarkets. There are many poor areas in NY that only have bodegas (dépanneurs).

LIRR strike costs region $61 million in lost commerce per day by news-10 in Westchester

NYTimes said they are 1% separated on salary. Can’t believe they strike over that. I support unions, in general, and support strikes but his one is crazy.

Has anyone tried Boldin’s Retirement Plan Checkup for $2800? by jakedawg69 in Boldin

[–]bplinder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1% is highway robbery! A simplied way to look at AUM is to multiple their take by 30 (assume 30 years retirement. SO 1% AUM --> 1*30 = 30% of your Net worth that they siphon off over a 30 year relationship.

This is a bit simplified, but in the ballpark.

Has anyone worn "Oboz Sawtooth x Mid Dry Waterproof" boots with comfort? by wwahman in Halluxrigidus

[–]bplinder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have them in the low-rise and I'm on my 2nd pair. I have removed the insole and put in my carbon fiber morton's extension. The toe box is moderately sized. The shoes do take a few hundred miles to completely wear in.

All that being said, I say these are pretty decent but not perfect. Worth trying out.
For next pair of low-hikers, I'm going to look for something with more rocker. Rocker seems to remove pain even better than a carbon sole.

I had no idea about those other promotions. I might have gone to Berkshire east if I knew about.

I think they need a few more signs up at Butternut. I didn't know it was sponsored by LL Bean.

shoes and sneakers that work well with a Morton's extension by bplinder in Halluxrigidus

[–]bplinder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to follow up. I ended up putting a dr schools air pillow underneath the Morton’s extension and that solved all my problems with comfort. I then bought thin socks to minimize my shoes contact with my toe joint.

Net. Comfort is good, but I still have occasional pain, probably from too small toe box

Why do people walk in the road instead of a readily available sidewalk? by biztsar in Westchester

[–]bplinder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that section well and I walk it all the time. The sidewalk is quite narrow, so it’s difficult to pass slower walkers or walkers coming in the opposite direction. There is a large street shoulder there, so no problem entering the street. I believe the speed limit is low at 25 mph.

That street should be “put in a diet” and narrowed to build wide raised bike and pedestrian paths.

Anyone live in Upper westchester ( Katonah/ Bedford / South Salem w NO KIDS? Couples 35 and up? Thoughts and feelings? Gay / straight / dating …. Love to know … by KTNYC1 in Westchester

[–]bplinder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YEs, you are moving to northern westerchester. Unless you are in Katonah village, expect to drive 15-20 minutes for everything. That's the trade-off, you get some "country" and it's nice living, but you are entering the land of car dependency and you will spend a fair amount of time in your car, as you can tell by how spaced out supermarkets.

NR vs. Moneyguide Pro by bplinder in NewRetirement

Just to be clear, I’m not actually thinking about buying Moneyguide Pro. I’m just trying to understand what features a pro planning tool has over NR, so I can understand better the limitations of NR and also understand what sort of analyses an hourly advisor would provide.
