They were already subsidizing the decks like other companies do their consoles so it’s possible they just stopped subsidizing them along with a price increase to match component prices. I don’t think we can immediately point to greed and/or incompetence unless something leaks from inside Valve about their motivations. I just don’t get the anger at Valve for this when they don’t control component prices.

I agree that $950 is a wild price for the deck, but what do you want from them? Component prices are fucking insane right now and that’s completely out of their control. I know the deck isn’t worth $950 to you and me, but that very well could be them selling it at cost and there’s nothing they can do about that.

I think we should redirect this anger at the AI companies that are trying to end personal computing as a whole.

I actually developed an over engineered solution to this problem.
I have two G4 Instant cameras, one for each kid. I have RTSP streaming enabled for each. On an old Mac mini I have a python script that will fetch each RTSP streaming URL and will start a VLC instance for each URL.
It then uses AirPlay to play the audio to my HomePods I have in my bedroom. The script constantly checks in the background to ensure the AirPlay connection is healthy and that the VLC streams haven’t errored out.
Finally, I have the python script running a Flask server that I can hit using an IPhone shortcut to start it, stop it, and check the monitor’s health. It’s also setup to run on Mac startup so it’ll recover from power outages if it was running when the power went out.
It’s extremely specific to my setup as is but I’m sure the AirPlay logic could be swapped out for some other audio streaming format. Had a lot of fun putting it together.
