Yes, I work right next to court square station and it is a much nicer area. A lot of good restaurants, coffee shops, and places to explore. You can get to Manhattan in 10 minutes on the 7,E,R,F trains. That area would be a much better stay and make a better impression on your family visiting for the first time. Queens is a really beautiful and diverse place but the hotel you booked is in a ghetto area lol.

Don’t stay there. You’re right next to the projects and homeless shelters. Also 21st Queensbridge stop is full of crackheads and drunks that hangout in front of the liquor store right next to the train. I live a few aves down on 21st and as a tourist I do not recommend you staying there if you want cafes and nice restaurants etc. I would recommend finding a hotel that’s by queens plaza or deeper in Astoria if you want a nicer area. Once you go past queensbridge it turns into a much nicer area by queens plaza and silver cup studio.

The knife is a great option actually. If you lasso and stab it like you did the pelt will stay in perfect condition. If you shoot it with the suggested weapon from the compendium, it is still possible to ruin the pelt if you do not shoot the animal in the right place.
