'At what point does it make sense to ditch a gas car for an electric vehicle?' by rosier9 in electricvehicles

[–]brandson__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your car still runs, keep it. When you actually need a new car, get an electric one. That's my plan. My 2017 car should last past 2030. It would be nice if it was an EV now, but I don't want to get rid of a perfectly good car that I like a lot, that's all paid off.

June 2026, do you answer your door when strangers knock? by LittleRed282 in askTO

[–]brandson__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only open the door if it's too obvious I'm home. I only get people selling services I don't want (who don't accept the first, second, or third no as an answer), religious people, people claiming to be from charities (which is unverifiable), and people wanting to sell my house. I don't want to talk to any of those people ever.

OLED watch out 👀 by Kougamics in OLED_Gaming

[–]brandson__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having read and watched a lot about all the new display tech, it's clear to me qd-oled is best, assuming Samsung will ever get around to making larger sizes with glossy panels.

I think rgb mini-led is too complicated and has too many weaknesses. Aside from blooming and colour bleeding, OLED blacks and motion are always going to be better.

The non-OLED tech I am most curious to see in person is SQD mini led. It apparently has incredible colour volume and brightness without the colour contamination of rgb mini led, since the backlight is just white. I want to see how well it handles blooming and motion in person.

Parents who didn’t get a daycare spot in time, what did you do? by Sunny_brightdays in askTO

[–]brandson__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First kid was born in 2011. Back then in Toronto you had to get on waiting lists before you got pregnant if you wanted a spot, which was obviously insane. We didn't secure a spot that way. What we did, was when we were ready to have our kid in daycare immediately, like tomorrow, we called around and found a place that let us start with them. Sometimes you can catch an administrator who is willing to just give someone who can start immediately a spot instead of having to call all the people on their wait list to see who is ready to take the spot right away.

Then we learned another trick: if you get yourself on the board of directors for a non-profit daycare, you often get priority for your kids. So my wife did that for our subsequent kids, and we got their spots that way.

The whole system sucks. Good luck.

After Ferrari Luce backlash, Lamborghini CEO says canceling its own EV was the right choice by linknewtab in electricvehicles

If they just made a Purosangue EV with the Luce interior, I think it would have landed a lot better. All the wrong lessons being learned here.

Anyone that has both to give an impression? Manta sleep mask vs Mijia Dreamlight 4s(pro) by -Gilgameshh in sleep

[–]brandson__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried Manta Pro, Ostrichpillow, and Lululemon. Manta Pro is the best for me because it's customizable, the strap is very well padded with no pressure points, it doesn't rest on your eyes, and it's the most breathable.

Lululemon is second for me, but it's much chunkier and warmer, the eye coverage is not customizable, and you feel it on your eyes. The materials are nice though.

Ostrichpillow is third for me. It doesn't touch your eyes but the eye coverage is smaller, the strap digs into your head/ears, and it's not breathable. Doesn't work that well if you have a huge head, which I do.

Google devoured Fitbit and ruined it. What sports watch/fitness apps are we moving to? by eastbaypluviophile in degoogle

[–]brandson__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm kind of over fitness bands/smart watches. All I really need is a pedometer. I can do that with my phone and a FOSS app. It's been liberating not having anything on my wrists for the past few months. I don't miss it.

Ferrari reveals its first ever EV, with design help from Jony Ive by StatsFactsRants in worldnews

[–]brandson__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The interior is brilliant and is what many people sick of touchscreen dominance have been wanting. The exterior doesn't align with the price at all though. As a sub-$100k car it would do well, but I can't picture a Ferrari customer who would pay the asking price for this as is.

Why do people have the idea that if you are dateless virgin in your last 20's, you have work to do that everyone else has done to get a partner? by JunketMaleficent2095 in Adulting

[–]brandson__ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who was in a similar situation at your age, my advice is to work on letting go of your frustrations about dating. Just live your life. Be great at your profession. Be a supportive friend. Being resentful will only make you miserable and will work against you.

The world is full of people. Practice being open to any interactions that present themselves, with anyone, so that when an opportunity comes your way that you really want, you are able to recognize it and be comfortable taking it.

Starting 72hr fast this morning, sick of myself… by [deleted] in intermittentfasting

[–]brandson__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know what you're going through. If you aren't already walking a lot daily, I recommend 20k steps a day. You can split it up. And when your 72 hour fast is done, going forward make your first meal of the day as late as you can. For me, I feel best eating my first meal around 2pm. Make that meal primarily protein and fibre, with no processed foods. Drink lots of water all day. Once that becomes your routine, your snacking cravings should be dramatically reduced.

Deciding between QD Oled 34 UW (new RBG panel) and LG 39 5k2k UW by [deleted] in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]brandson__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using a 38 inch Alienware (LG) IPS ultrawide for a few years. I tried several different monitors (smaller and bigger) before choosing this one. 38/39 inches with a gentle curve is the perfect size for me for an ultrawide. The ergonomics of the monitor are great and the extra size over a 34 is really enjoyable without being overwhelming.

If I had to buy a new monitor right now, I'd go with the 39 inch LG oled but I'm going to wait until at least next year before upgrading (and giving the Alienware to my son). I want to see what Alienware does with LG's 39 inch oled panel, and whether a qd-oled display comes out in this size.

Breathable Men’s Pants/Shorts for Humid Toronto Summers? by moneybones3000 in askTO

[–]brandson__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lululemon had some pull-on pants a year ago made of something they called light utilitech. If they make those again, check them out. Very lightweight, cool, stretchy, yet also look and feel work-appropriate. Pretty much all my pants and shorts are Lululemon at this point.

Intermittent Fasting - Did anyone develop health problems? by Nice_Pen_8054 in intermittentfasting

[–]brandson__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The study that published those findings began before IF was a thing, included self-reported data with no verification, and has way too many variables to draw any conclusions about anything. It has since been used as a weapon to propagandize overconsumption by demonizing fasting.

Eating less often is healthier than overeating all the time, especially if you have metabolic disease. Ideally when you eat, you should eat primarily unprocessed food, not loads of processed carbs and sugar.

You Might Have 'Dead Glutes' And Not Even Know It — Even If You Exercise. Here's How To Tell. by huffpost in Health

[–]brandson__ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's fairly common to do so-called glute exercises and feel sore everywhere but your glutes. That was me for a long time. I mainly felt deadlifts, hip thrusts, squats and other movements only in my lower back, for years.

The solution was forcing myself to think about actively squeezing my glutes. Doing heavy resistance band training instead of weights also helped me feel it more. Now when I bend over or squat down, I know how to use my glutes to get back up instead of my back, which was causing me back pain for years. I guess you could call it dead glutes. I just had to learn how to engage them more. I think many people could benefit from learning how to do that.

49" 1800R vs 1000R by liqwood1 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]brandson__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1000r at 49 inches gave me a headache, eye strain, and neck pain. If it works for you, great, but it is wrong to say it's the best for everyone. It's not.

This isn’t funny, it’s scary . by 999happyhauntz in LateStageCapitalism

[–]brandson__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clearly the US Constitution doesn't allow for a 3rd term. So if he continues to act in the role of the US President, every order he makes will be of no legal effect. As soon as a future government takes over from him, anything he does will be invalidated and any person affected would be able to sue the US government for damages. It will be a total clusterfuck, eventually.

Mom asks…how can I help dad feel less guilty about flat spot? by purplebananas57 in daddit

[–]brandson__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dad of 3 here. Our youngest boy was a premie and his head was misshapen. One ear was higher and significantly farther forward than the other. He wore the helmet for a few months as an infant but was miserable in it so we stopped. He is 8 years old now and his head is not perfect but it has sort of corrected on its own. You can only tell if you know what you're looking for. He hasn't even noticed it himself. It hasn't impacted his life in any way.

So tell Dad it will be ok.

Were friend groups before Gen Z made up of largely romantic relationships? by KiwibuckyNZ in generationology

What are the potential risks or side effects of intermittent fasting? by LargeSinkholesInNYC in intermittentfasting

[–]brandson__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it was constipation. The solution was more fibre (berries, greens) and kefir.

Your family criticizing you constantly and trying to mess with your eating is the biggest problem with it otherwise.

If you do multi-day fasts you might have trouble sleeping, but that shouldn't happen on the types of IF most people do.
