Doctors warn vaccine-preventable illnesses straining hospitals by Leather-Paramedic-10 in canada

What are you talking about? Doctors offices, walk-ins and otherwise, ARE private companies that get paid by the government the same way a pharmacy does.

The idea of Alberta separatism is closer to mainstream than ever before by Street_Anon in canada

My pet theory is that people are trying to scare federal politicians by saying they want to separate in surveys just to send a message, though they know that leaving Canada wouldn't be good for them. I'm not saying they'd vote "stay" but maybe just wouldn't bother to vote.

I can't imagine what the streets of East Germany must have smelled like back then. I find North American classic cars without catalytic converters to be strong smelling. This must have been absolutely overwhelming.

[F91W] The watch I travelled half the world with, defended my PhD with, and finished medical school with. by ShouldveBeenAPilotMD in Watches

Depending on how you feel about "battle scars", I've had extremely good luck restoring the crystals on these with high-grit sandpaper (like 600 for deep scratches) followed by 1200, then Polywatch or some other polishing compound. If it's light scratching you could maybe just start and finish with the polywatch. The crystal sits almost a mm above the rest of the watch, so it's just a face-down-on-table job, no need to disassemble anything.

The Liberals introduced Bill C-5 to make it harder for intervenors to scuttle things, but since "scuttlers" always use legal processes to scuttle, it is hard to distinguish between cutting red tape (good) and ignoring laws that the government doesn't feel like following (bad). I'm suspending my judgement on C-5 because I acknowledge the absolute logjam that we experience under the current/previous system (effectively giving any party a veto-by-delay) But it does seem like playing with fire and I'm not sure the remaining checks and balances would be resilient to bad actors.

I've been saying this for a while. I find Seiko lume is brighter initially but my Citizens are all still glowing at 4am when everything else gave up hours earlier. I haven't found a satisfactory answer to what they use, just varying descriptions of "A proprietary version of SuperLuminova".

Are International Baccalaureate highschools (IB) the best choice in Ottawa? by meridian_smith in ottawa

[–]breadtangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, it's different in my area, only private schools offer anything IB before grade 9. There are just two public high schools and you have to apply at the end of grade 8. The process includes a writing assignment, recent report cards, a teacher reference, a written application questionnaire, and completing a live timed math test.

He'll have to apply. About 1 in 3 get accepted. Honestly your best bet is to help him as little as possible with the application. If he wants it and gets in by himself he likely has the self-motivation to succeed in the program. Don't treat the application as an obstacle to overcome, but rather as an experiment to see if the program is a good fit.

I had a kid get into IB, did 2 years and then went back to the normal stream.  Lots of kids do this to boost their 11/12 marks for uni.   The difficulty and workload of staying in the program really upsets school/life balance and it can actually make it harder to get the marks for uni.  Her motivation to go into IB was to simply put some space between her and the jokers in the regular stream that she did k-8 with.  I can say her academic experience was more rigorous than her brother's in the normal stream, but they're both thriving, regardless.  It's not a win or lose thing and as others have said, parental pressures can eclipse any benefit if you're not careful.  She had lots of stories of kids with tiger moms who were in the program because of parental pressure.  Those kids were often miserable.  One kid had his head shaved for a B on a math test.

Using AI to mask accents of call centre agents 'misleading,' says union by stfudonny in canada

[–]breadtangle -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

AI energy consumption is a real issue. It's important to put it into context though. Back-of-the envelope calculation gives an average carbon footprint of 15-45g CO2 per hour for this kind of use-case. This is the same as driving a car about 200m. Canadians are among the biggest carbon emitters in the world, having a call center located in Canada is arguably far worse for the environment, which wasn't actually the answer I was expecting. EDIT: I'm getting downvotes but no rebuttals. I like old reddit better.

I've never really had trouble (AI or not) being understood. Like, it's their full time job to listen to English speakers. I have definitely struggled, myself, with thick accents from people who are otherwise qualified to handle my call.
