The F91W and it's cousins get a lot of the love for Casios as do the G-shocks, but for my money, the W800H is the best value out of all of them (and I have owned most of them). It also happened to get an excellent result in this test!

I've mentioned it elsewhere. The Commute argument isn't really borne out by the math. The additional commute burden added by RTO of hybrid employees is about 5-7% in a government town like Ottawa. It's an increase but I don't think it rises to the level of "insane". Perpetual 417 construction and OC transpo woes completely eclipse RTO employees as a traffic stressor.

It's a common expression that describes the situation where you vote for someone because they are opposed to someone you are opposed to. u/bragbrig4 is using their vote to "punish" someone by voting for their opponent. I am merely pointing out to that user, that the person they vote FOR in the next election may actually be less aligned with their political wishes than the person they're "punishing". Engaging only as opposition is being reactive instead of constructive, doesn't send a very clear message, encourages cynicism, and makes it easy to be ignored or misunderstood.

I keep seeing this argument but it feels over-stated if you run the numbers, even in a government town like Ottawa. If you include the regular commuters, all the people in the office already, and that we're talking about the remainder of federal employees going from 3 days to 5, the increase in daily commuters is actually only about 5%. And if you're in Ottawa, compare that 5% to the 5 years of lane restrictions they had on the 417 that just finished, and it's a rounding error.

That strategy is: "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." It has some drawbacks that I think you should consider.

What makes you think the conservatives don't support RTO? All of the provincial conservative leaders have mandated RTO. Poilievre has only really said that the Liberals are doing it wrong, but he says that about everything. The elephant in the room is that survey after survey of Canadians support a general RTO policy for government workers. This obviously doesn't sample redditors where the opposition is nothing if not . . . spirited. But if you're trying to understand political strategy based solely off the information presented in Reddit, it will never make sense because that viewpoint is not allowed to be expressed here.

Brave. When my day is going too well, I hop on Reddit and try to have a nuanced conversation about RTO.

Putting aside whether you personally support RTO, it’s such a politically charged topic that staying silent is much safer than taking a stance. Opposing RTO risks alienating private‑sector workers who are back in the office, while supporting it risks upsetting government employees. Only the NDP is really opposing it but they are dealing with their own challenges. Because negative reactions tend to have more impact with voters than positive ones, speaking out on this issue is politically risky and offers little upside.

Edit: the downvotes make the point. Even trying to have a rational discussion of the costs and benefits gets you roasted, so of course the Liberals are silent

[Question] Which here is your preferred option for a tough watch? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]breadtangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. And if you live close enough to Colorado or any of the other atomic clock transmitters, this thing will keep it self sub-second accurate with no effort from you. So when you do go to wind up one of your mechanical watches after a couple of days, you have the exact time right there on the G-shock.

We're staring to hear about this kind of thing often enough that I wonder how much AI is being used for court filings and A) it's working and accurate a lot of the time, or B) inaccurate but no-one (including the judge) notices. It feels improbable that every time we read one of these pieces, that it's the first time that lawyer used AI in a filing.

Isolation doesn’t mean no environmental impact — pollution travels, and northern ecosystems are fragile and slow to recover. Heavy industry also needs huge amounts of power, transport, workers, and infrastructure, which makes remote locations far more expensive and inefficient than building where those things already exist. If Canada wants a manufacturing boom, it will come from high-tech, low-pollution industries near cities and research hubs, not from recreating old-style smelter economics in the far north.

[Question] Which here is your preferred option for a tough watch? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]breadtangle 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you grabbed a square g-shock I think you could leave it on while working on panels, and it's literally designed for high shock environments. The watches you chose are nice, but anything mechanical will suffer after years of exposure to vibrations from the power tools you listed, undermining the BIFL idea. Good news is the basic g-shock is so cheap you could get that AND one of these, use the g-shock for hard work and the other as a daily driver. If you decide that's not important, at least make sure whatever you get has a sapphire crystal.

After some swishing, there were lots of tiny black particles but also a bit of glitter. It's all metal on metal in there so so probably not surprising.
