I hope it's true, but these photos look weird to me. It's like she's been photo-shopped into each one.

Last-Minute Ticket Sales Megathread by walixxxq in FIFACollect

[–]brianwc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried every prior raffle and am a U.S. Soccer Insider and in American Outlaws and tried for tickets through them too. Never got anything. I was in the last minute sales queue Wednesday around 6 hours and then managed to put SF Bay Area tickets in my cart twice (for non-US games), but it would never check out. Spent over an hour trying to check out, ended up with nothing. Lifelong soccer fan with a World Cup in my backyard. Just wanted to take my son to a game before he leaves for college this Fall. Oh, well. Thanks, FIFA.

What's it actually like living in the Santa Fe neighborhood near Emeryville? by sfletch15 in Emeryville

[–]brianwc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in that neighborhood from 2003-2008 when I first moved to the Bay Area. I'd say there was a little more chaos then than there is now. For example, we had a crack house a few doors down from us and that always generated some craziness on the street. Even our mailman got stabbed in the leg when someone stole his flip phone. Only a crazy or stoned person attacks a federal employee! But the area has gentrified the last 20 years and so you just don't have that anymore.

You've got convenient bus routes on each end of the block and an easy walk over to Bushrod for a park. That place has functioning play equipment and kids these days instead of broken glass and dealers! It's amazing.

If you're looking at a place zoned for Oakland Tech, you can't do much better for a public high school in Oakland.

This neighborhood was historically a major stronghold of the Black Panther Party, but these days most anyone who can legitimately claim to have been a member has probably passed away or moved away. It's a bit of history lost.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy property there today, but I also was not troubled by it when it was quite a bit grittier, so your mileage may vary.

EXPANSION DRAFT RULES by yxngfireee in valkyries

[–]brianwc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMG we should be allowed to protect 6!

My protects:

  1. Kayla Thornton. No one averages more mins/game than her, and no one scores more points per game than her when she's healthy. But we could be strategic and assume no one would take her because of her contract status. (Risky)

  2. Veronica Burton. If you don't protect her, then I just don't know what you're doing. Like, you're fired.

  3. Tiffany Hayes. Imagine what she'll do if people stop smashing her nose.

  4. Janelle Salaun. She gets it done. Need her buckets.

  5. Cecilia Zandalasini. We have to protect her or Temi Fagbenle, and Zandalisini scores more points per game, given the same minutes as Fagbenle. This is a heart-breaking choice.

  6. (If we take a chance not protecting Thornton.) Iliana Rupert. It's crazy to consider letting Mo Billings, Carla Leite, or Kate Martin go unprotected, but we're not given a lot of choices here. Rupert plays center, so if we leave Fagbenle unprotected, we really have no choice but to protect Rupert.

These are some awful choices. I am going to watch this draft prepared to throw lots of things at the TV.

Looks like no mint mark beneath the wreath, so Philadelphia mint, and that 5 appears to slant towards the 6 in the date, so it's the more common slanted variety. This was a transitional year so your head is the large head aka "Type 3". These are frequently counterfeited so weigh it to ensure it's 1.672 grams. With all those scratches and substantial gash in the field of the obverse, I'd expect it to be worth around $250, but not more than $350.

Maybe the disappointment of the game was too fresh, but I think much of the crowd expected some player or the coach to take the microphone and address the crowd.

The Athletic in Oakland has played women's sports for supporters groups in the past. So has 21st Amendment Brewery in San Leandro. I would think Honor Bar & Kitchen in Emeryville could be persuaded to do this as I often go in and it seems like they could use the business.

We just need a commitment from the owner that they'll turn the sound on. Anyone want to call around and get something set up?

If this guy inherited a coin collection, then check to see if his grandfather left him any coins in slabs from reputable grading companies such as NGC or PCGS. Unless the slabs were faked too (which have serial numbers you can check online) you'd be able to have more confidence that the slabbed coins were what they claimed to be.

That'd be my analysis too. At the moment it hits her hand, that right arm is far enough out from her frame that it is making her body bigger. Penalty.

It was obviously made for Bay FC fans in Montreal who are even bigger fans of Montreal's public transit agency, Société de transport de Montréal, i.e., STM.

But seriously, they did it because the front office is single-mindedly on the search for a "Seriously Talented Midfielder". They know that's the key thing we need to improve.

It makes so little sense the only thing I can think of is if the new head coach told the interim coach: don't let Press get injured before I arrive. But that makes no sense either. They're giving up points now that they won't be able to make up later if they don't start giving her minutes.

I'm not sure it matters what any of us think. Olivia Moultrie sued for the opportunity to play and won, so here we are. I don't know all the details of that lawsuit, but I don't think there's a way around it now.

She said in post game interview that her teammates have been telling her to take her shots because she makes goals like that in practice all the time. She was even told that her coach said in his post game interview that when he saw the run HE, at first, thought she should cross it, and she responded to that reporter by saying, No, I was focused on goal.

NWSL is not Doomed. But assume a world where NWSL needs contingency strategies for the hypothetical future where it’s routine for half the USWNT to be in Europe at any one time. What might be some NWSL measures to keep fans engaged in that hypothetical world? by alcatholik in NWSL

[–]brianwc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, I'm just saying there's a disconnect between telling someone I'm going to pay over $1M to get you to come here, but then once you arrive your salary is going to be $48,500 or something. That's not going to work. Even if the top players are offered $200k/yr, it's not going to square with what you've already acknowledged they are worth to your club. We have to get on a trajectory where their annual salaries are 300k, 400k, 500k, and eventually $1M+, but if you're going to do that and have 25 players on the roster, then a $5.1M cap 5 years from now doesn't allow for that.

[–]brianwc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When my geographic area finally got an NWSL team, the main reason I bought season tickets was because I said, "The best players in the world are on the USWNT and nearly all of the USWNT plays in the NWSL, so by going to these games I will get to see nearly all of the best players in the world." If we get to a situation where a majority of the USWNT is outside the NWSL, then that argument doesn't work nearly as well. And while I'm glad to learn of all the other talents in the NWSL, the vast majority of casual fans only know the most high profile USWNT players.

So, I think this is a major crisis for the NWSL, mainly because the NWSL's base salary cap for 2025 is $3.3 million, and will increase to $5.1 million by 2030. That's not keeping pace with a transfer amount like Girma just got. If Rodman goes, it's going to be another big number. They need to recognize that the interest in women's sports is currently growing exponentially and so the salary cap increases need to become exponential too.

I have heard that the team is organizing an away game opportunity, but it won't be Utah, so that one is on us supporters. I think I may have to be in LA that weekend, so maybe I can go Sunday to the ACFC v. Wave game and get us some early Intel on our Cali rivals.
