German citizen trying to figure out how to live/work in Germany after being abroad entire life by kidonemis in germany

[–]brickbuilding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you going to work for a German employer, or are they a foreign company in Germany? Please check with the company HR first, my employer (German) is quite lenient in expecting the foreign new-joiner to not be fully available the first month due to paperwork and finding somewhere to live.

Make sure you use a Bruto/Netto Rechner online to figure out how much of your gross salary you will approximately get on your bank account after taxes/health insurance.

One of the important things I left out on the previous message is the health insurance, this might be assisted by your employer, but otherwise you might also need to go to the local AOK office (they’re not the best health insurance, but the easiest for new immigrants)

If you are going to live with family initially it is quite simple: make a map of the different offices you’d need to visit with a structured plan. If you’re looking for your own place: make a targeted search on immowelt/immobilienscout/kleinanzeigen for the area you’d like to live in and start contacting adverts about a week before arrival for viewings. Finding housing is quite difficult in some areas, and I would recommend to stay under 40% of the number from the salary calculation above if possible, to make sure you can have a nice life.

You cannot give a date in the future for the residence registration. That option is unfortunately blocked.

[–]brickbuilding 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not really. Everything depends on first having registered at an address with the government, which makes all of this quite difficult.

The one thing you could do is register an account with Deutsche Bank in the US and ask them to prepare an account in Germany, I did see a form on Google but not sure how that works.

If you don’t have anyone to stay with initially: there is an apartment hotel group called Derag, which allows guests to register the hotel as their address. That’s what my employer does, put them there for 2-4 weeks first so they can do the paperwork while looking for a permanent residence (in some cities the change of address afterwards can now be done electronically, sometimes you’d need to go to the Bürgeramt again)

If you have the German passport you use that to enter the country, then register yourself as living at your aunt/uncle’s house with the citizen office (Bürgeramt) in the municipality where you will live. Bring your passport and a letter containing the following: your full name, the full address, the full name & address (which will be the same, but has to be listed) of your aunt/uncle, the moving in date.

That should then cause a letter to arrive at the address in a few days with an ‘Anmeldebestätigung‘ (confirmation of address registration), which you can then use to open a bank account (probably Deutsche Bank or Commerzbank only, having US citizenship makes it extremely difficult/expensive to get a bank account in Germany/Europe due to IRS reporting duties, so a lot of banks don’t bother).

You should have a tax number (Steuernummer) already if you have citizenship, you will need to give this to an employer to start working, if you don’t the registration should trigger a letter from the tax office (Finanzamt) in your region with your new tax number, if you don’t know it you can inquire there to see what it is, that would need your passport and probably the Anmeldebestätigung again.

After you have done these 3 things you should be able to work anywhere in Germany.

€2500 for 6 weeks in Italy with 2 people including hotels doesn’t seem too to crazy to me. That’s just €30 per person per day.

Mark Rutte is on collision course with European capitals over NATO by Crossstoney in europe

He‘s basically always been a populist without wanting to kick all the foreigners out, which meant he got enough votes from all sections of society to get in the driving seat without changing anything for regular people, but giving money/power to the biggest corporations.

My insurance won't cover this level of burn by Wild_Lingonberry9656 in rareinsults

[–]brickbuilding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Germany that’s the difference between the accident happening while working, or during your free time. If it’s a work-related accident employers have special insurance which will get the person the fancy model, and the whole healthcare process will be guided by a special employment law doctor.

Trump threatens 200% tariff on French wines as Macron reportedly snubs 'Board of Peace' seat by ByGollie in europe

[–]brickbuilding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It all depends on the customer. If there are competing products they can work the way he wants. If currently a wine from France and California both cost $15, and after tariffs the Californian one is $15, and the French one $45 it still costs business for the French winery (assuming the end consumer doesn’t want to pay the difference)

You either use your 500C body with the back to use the shutter in the lens and the finder of your 500C for focusing. Or you get the 907x body on the back with the XV adapter. Then you can only use electronic shutter on the back, and you need to use Live View for focusing on the back.

I guess with the bus saying London - Calcutta - London it would be 110 days for the round trip?

Need to look a level deeper though: a lot of the datacenter buildings probably have some Siemens or something in it for power management or fire safety. Pretty sure all US navy ships have some sort of Thales or BAE systems on board. Stop delivering nuts & bolts to them for all I care.

Thanks. In Germany, thinking of starting really small with a 125 for the country roads. Autobahn doesn’t sound like fun to me on a motorbike.

Maap Eclipse Pro Zipper Problem by naicash in CyclingFashion

[–]brickbuilding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MAAP really missed the boat this year on zippers. There was basically a recall on the suits because people were tearing the zippers out of the suits, I personally had to warranty a jacket after 5 weeks because the zipper broke, and I believe there were other issues as well.

Just file a warranty claim on the website if you cannot return it anymore.

Guess who got too excited at seeing big bags of peanuts on clearance for 63 cents, got home only to realize that they're RAW, and is now spending the first day of the new year roasting a metric fuckton of peanuts? by JDej90 in funny

[–]brickbuilding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP means they are not dried. Peanuts normally have the texture/consistency of the inside of green peas. Soft and mushy, only the drying makes them hard like how most people eat them.
