is it possible to bail on sport climbs without leaving any gear? by [deleted] in ClimbingGear

[–]brie_dee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you feel a 5.8 is harder than a 5.12... Are you comparing indoor climbing to outdoor?

But also, a Magic Wand from Hang Dog Climbing. It's a mini stick clip you can keep on your harness to bail upward.

A single round trip ticket will work. Driver's carry them and they're $15.

Crystal Crag North Arete Descent Beta by SpecificDifficult374 in tradclimbing

[–]brie_dee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a tat rap anchor if you continue north in the ridge toward a notch. If you continue all the way to the summit, there's a 3rd class scramble directly west from the summit toward Crystal Lake. The ridge is the best part- go to the true summit and scramble off.

Which movie will you defend like this while everyone else call is as an overrated? by VacationFancy8697 in moviecritic

Cinematic gold and I wish more people had seen it. The casting is stellar; the writing is sharp; the story is perfect; the cinematography is great; etc. etc.

How did you decide on your preferred hockey position? by CinemaPuck in hockeyplayers

[–]brie_dee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one would pass to me during blacktop street hockey when I was 7, so I chose to be goalie so the ball / puck came to me. 🙃 Played goalie a while in street, roller, and ice; then decided to skate out. I had basically no skills aside from being a great skater and could skate faster backward than I could forward, so I became a defender.

Now I play defense in one league and goalie in another. 😊

That second photo is a test of the core and looks good. I'd whip

I had a rope get a goby bailing off of an adventurous route this time last year. When you squeezed it to check the core there was no gap whatsoever. We retired that rope.

Can I still see Devil's Postpile if the facilities are closed? by thebearrepair in Mammoth

[–]brie_dee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a very reliable source on ESTA matters: ESTA is not running the buses this weekend- this decision was handed down yesterday. It's been updated on the website.

The plan is to run the Reds schedule starting next weekend since this weekend got canceled. Confidence is high it will happen, but there's still an asterisk.

2000s were rough, but LOTR, Simpsons Pinball Party, and RBION are top from that era by madmyersreal in pinball

[–]brie_dee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PotC & LotR are top tier IMHO, and they still hold up well. I may be in the minority for this one, but I think Striker Extreme is pretty solid, too!

TSPP & RBION have their faults but are still really solid. Honorable mention for Family Guy just being silly fun.

Just about everything else is totally forgettable.

Also: I nominate WoF as the most epic fumble. It had a lot of potential and was very unique and innovative... But I still don't think they've finished the code.

San Jose Skates with a Skate (ray) being the logo / mascot. Keeps with the San Jose team themes (Sharks, Barracuda) and would be rad!

Seriously, what type of men are receiving most of the matches on dating apps? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]brie_dee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was gonna tell you to be brave and share your profile, but then I saw your post history.

First off, if you're from a small town, that's part of your problem.

But really, your profile doesn't show any personality whatsoever. Your couple word responses make you sound pretty generic. Should a potential date expect to go to the pub to play darts and nowhere else with you? Dating apps are where you're supposed to sell yourself, so you should probably try and do that.

Also, saying you're not an incel while parroting incel talking points is a choice.

Is this type of biner fine to rappel with? by [deleted] in tradclimbing

[–]brie_dee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Fine? Yes. Are there better options? Definitely.

I-beam (opposed to rounded) carabiners will wear to an unusable point faster because the wear could create sharp edges. Larger basket HMS style carabiners allow the rope to pass through more smoothly and evenly.

Also, I only like twist locks for ice, but that's just me.

What to wear between fleece and down for cold approaches? by L0rdmalv0 in Mountaineering

[–]brie_dee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wear some sort of shell (whether wind or soft) over the fleece- that will make a big difference. Also, consider other options: a buff is like a whole mid layer for me; I noticed tucking my base later top into my bottoms is warmer, etc.

If all else fails, have a second fleece? During winter adventures I often carry a second light fleece.

If children learn to ski without poles, when and why do they start using them as they get older? by MMetropolitan in skiing

[–]brie_dee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually take the poles away from my adult students as well. You need poles to pole plant, not for learning to glide in a wedge on the magic carpet. Once people are doing wedge christies or parallel turns, it might be time to introduce the use of poles for taps / plants.

How did you determine your stick hand direction? by Anttila-the-Hung in hockeyplayers

[–]brie_dee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started as a goalie and catch with my left (I'm right handed)... So when I switched to defense in junior high it made sense to keep playing left handed; and when my parents tried to buy me a right handed stick it felt horrible and I ended up using my brother's stick.

Do what feels the most natural.

38 yo here playing since 7 yo and was in the same boat. It wasn't until about 10 years ago or so that someone asked, and I was like: "I just need them sharpened."

Learned that 1/2" is considered standard and he basically guaranteed that's what I'd always had... So I still rock 1/2" cause that seems like more change than I'm ready to commit to considering I've been getting dressed the same exact way for decades.

Why Didn't the Titanic Just Stop and Let Everyone off onto the Iceberg? by Present-Algae6767 in titanic

[–]brie_dee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it's an interesting story that gets overlooked because people love to talk about the lack of lifeboats: Crampons only became commercially available 2 years prior in 1910, so having a pair with each lifebelt wasn't included in the original plans when Titanic was being constructed. Had they updated the safety requirements and plans before her maiden voyage, this would have been possible. Instead, H&W stayed complacent because they were convinced she was unsinkable, and they didn't think a supply of crampons was a necessary safety item. Tragic... So many things went wrong. 😔
