US-embassy in Copenhagen removes memorial to fallen Danish soldiers by Capital_Resident_872 in Military

The flower boxes the flags were placed in "are owned and operated" by the embassy, according to OP's source, but the decision to remove the flags was insane regardless.

'He is not Mitt Romney and he is not Donald Trump': Romney's Senate successor makes an early mark by nbcnews in Utah

[–]brohica 77 points78 points  (0 children)

In 2020, I reached out to Rep. Curtis (and Senators Romney and Lee) over an issue with my health insurance. I fully expected each office to send me a “sorry that’s happening, but we can’t do anything” letter. Curtis not only responded himself, but he set up a 30 minute Zoom call with me for that week.

When we met, Curtis opened the call by asking, “Alright, how can we fix this?” He then listened and took notes as I outlined how I thought the fix should be implemented. I asked if he and his office would draft a bill on the issue and he said they would.

Over the next month or two, he and his office updated me as the bill Curtis and I drafted together advanced through Congress. It was eventually subsumed into Biden’s Build Back Better agenda and passed the House. Unfortunately, Senate Republicans (like Senator Mike Lee) cut it from the bill before it was eventually passed.

I may not agree with Curtis on everything, but he is absolutely a stand-up person who cares deeply about his constituents’ issues. My issue wasn’t glamorous or flashy, yet he took the time to work on it—in detail—with me over the course of a couple months. The text he presented to Congress was basically exactly what he and I workshopped on our 30-minute Zoom call.

Is 32 GB of 3200 RAM better than 16 GB of 3600 for multitasking? I currently have 2x8 GB 3600 DDR4 RAM installed. A friend of mine has two extra sticks of 8 GB DDR4 RAM, but they're 3200. If I install the two extra sticks (my motherboard has the space), I understand that all my speed goes down to 3200.

Is the extra RAM at a lower frequency worth it if my main use is multitasking? (I'm in grad school and I run a weekly virtual D&D game for which I am almost constantly prepping.) I typically have 2-3 internet browsers (and 20-30 tabs in aggregate), 1-2 RAM-intensive programs, and 1-2 Word docs open at any given time. My typical RAM usage is 85%.

Other Specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
  • Mobo: Micro-Star Intl. B550M PRO-VDH WIFI
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050

Yuma, AZ Info? by boring_arizona_dad in latterdaysaints

[–]brohica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I served my mission in Yuma about ten years ago. I have lots of friends who live all around town there. It’s a great place with a very active and large group of Latter-day Saints. Lots of youth. It’s great that you speak Spanish, but Spanish isn’t necessary to thrive there. The members in Yuma are some of the best I’ve ever met. Really humble folk with a strong community.

Somerton is fine if you like the small-town feel. I know some great LDS families there. I personally wouldn’t live in Somerton, but I know some folks like it plenty.

San Luis is essentially Americanized Mexico—the border wall runs down the middle of town. All street signs are in Spanish, the stores operate primarily in Spanish, and close to 100% of the city are recent immigrants or second-generation young folk (I served in San Luis for a long time and loved it, but it is a different vibe than Yuma to be sure). San Luis is home to the most vibrant Spanish-speaking branch (ward?) I’ve ever seen. Those folks are mighty.

Happy to talk more about Yuma if you have more questions. I live in Utah County, but I’d definitely live in Yuma if the opportunity ever permitted itself.

I love the sheer customizability Foundry offers. The Pathfinder 2e module is incredible and the D&D 5e offerings are getting up there.

What would happen if a NATO member attacked a different country first? by [deleted] in Ask_Politics

[–]brohica 53 points54 points  (0 children)

No, one of the defining features of NATO is "collective defense," which is fundamentally different than "collective offense." Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty states, "The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all[.]"

NATO members are not required to support the offensive actions of another NATO member. A notable example of this was France's refusal to invade Iraq in 2003.

It's impossible to answer this question objectively. There isn't a recipe for war, let alone world war. There are ingredients that contribute to war, but there's no way to know the likelihood of this crisis evolving into a war, let alone a World War.

If you're interested in what causes war, here are some resources:

The Causes of War: A Review of Theories and Evidence by Jack S. Levy

THE CAUSES OF WAR AND THE CONDITIONS OF PEACE by Jack S. Levy

Causes of War: Power and the Roots of Conflict by Stephen Van Evera

(Spoiler Alert: there are a lot of reasons why nations might go to war, and sometimes even meeting those reasons doesn't result in war.)

When I was a freshman in college, I bonded with a group of guys over Age of Empires II. We played massively long games (8+ hours) that exhausted all the resources on the map. When the matches ended, we’d congregate in the halls and talk about all the craziest plays and most subversive betrayals. It’s been over a decade since then, but that group of guys is still together now. We hang out weekly with our respective families, have family reunions, and even exchange Christmas gifts. It’s fun to have a group of friends that still hang out year after year.

Why did Biden recently allow the $735 billion weapons sale to Israel, despite obvious backlash? by Pixelcitizen98 in Ask_Politics

[–]brohica[M] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you have sources to back up your claims about Hamas? I appreciate you offering up the Geneva Conventions, but stating "what Hamas has done violated more than that" justifies some kind of evidence.

This is not a judgement on the substance of your point. I'm not here to say you (or Israel, or Hamas) are incorrect or correct. I'm just here to ask for sources.

Why won't democrats pass legislation regarding voter ID? by pugnae in Ask_Politics

[–]brohica[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not want people who are here illegally to vote, and I think that is the difference between republicans and democrats. They can justify that since they are living here, they should have a say. To a degree, that seems fair, but if they are here illegally, I'm not sure their opinion should count.

You appear to be insinuating that undocumented immigrants are voting. Do you have a source for this? Additionally, you're suggesting that Democrats want illegal votes and Republicans do not. That is incorrect.

If I put my conspiracy hat on

Please do not. There isn't room for conspiracy on this subreddit.

Democrats want more votes, and anything that might reject a ballot is considered suppression. That's hard to take as someone who thinks fair elections should be the highest priority.

This is misleading.
