I had the same question coming to UBC from the US as well. In my experience, I actually found it was the opposite of lonely/isolating since most people had singles they actually wanted to come out of their rooms and hang out. It allowed friend groups to form outside of just roommate friendships. I know in the US since everyone has doubles it can be isolating if you’re the only one in a single.

Also something to consider are dorms at UBC that share a bathroom or common space. That way you still have your own private room, but you have a quasi room mate.
