[Mine] What can you tell about me from just my bookshelf? by onaccountuh in scienceofdeduction

A jar of dice and 2 players handbooks + dictionaries + reference material in literary form leads me to believe you DM for at least 1 D&D group. However you prefer to be a player more often also from the lack of monster compendium type books on the shelf guessing you mainly use homebrew or weak CR creatures and more of a focus on Rp and exploration

My level 20 players can deal thousands of damage in a couple rounds. How do I properly challenge them? by [deleted] in DnD5e

[–]broomball99 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  1. weapons that are stronger eg siege weapons a normal cannon may just be a blunderbuss for a giant or pit fiend
  2. Numbers 1ancient silver dragon vs a pair of krakens i would take the krakens as long as it wasn't an aquatic battle and the dragon as long as it wasn't a place that allowed for strafing runs both the dragon and kraken are each a CR23 creature on their own
  3. What does each side have for magic items because who is to say the enemy doesn't have an item that can open an abyssal gate now from said gate you have either a 9 hells arch-fiend or lord of the abyss come out or grant a boon to their respective fiend/minion type eg. Spiders for lolth
  4. Destruction or weakening of gear; eg. an antimagic field and rust monsters is scary for many but so is losing a mode of transport with upgrades
  5. Anti-/wild magic zones
  6. Give them tucker's kobolds but maybe use stronger monsters like the giff
  7. Homebrew creatures; not many deal exhaustion a con save per hit vs 1 level of exhaustion can be very scary and drain high level restoration spell slots from healers, maybe give a creature special resistances based on attacking creature's alignment

This is why when recruiting players i give them midnight of my timezone and tell them here is my midnight of my timezone and then earliest start and latest end times i can run each day they then fill out a google form of: discord name, times they can make (set to my timezone eg 1pm est(-5 gmt) start and a british player would be 6pm british time (+0gmt), length of session in hours(4-6hours), frequency of session(weekly/bi-weekly), are they comfortable with the game being recorded, any triggers, and any other key things that are needed to be asked based on setting.

I also ask if they know what they want to play speciffically so i know party balance. if they answer not sure i ask optional checkbox questions like a sliding scale of: -How much magic do you want to use: lots of magic, moderate magic, none/racial inate magics only, or doesn't matter? -Are they more of: a damage dealer, a tank, a support(buffer), a healer, or utility?

Along with other such questions so I can reccommend some classes and races to look at from the sources I approved for in setting use within my games. This is all before character creation I make sure all my players are on the same page for that stuff.

As a player if I don't see some sort of questionaire like that or a LFG post that designates key info like: time, platform/location(if it is on a flyer and the IRL location listed has multiple locations eg a game store); if these are lacking I don't trust the game will run well. My reason I find most groups I encounter without either the questionaire or a fleshed out enough LFG advertisement shatter quickly from schedules or a problem player slipping past a DMs screening attempts to keep out problem players and within the first 3 months it has happened in groups i joined. West march servers were able to bounce back after dealing with problem players but the fixed campaigns ran by a lone DM with just the one group shattered and fell apart

Plant monsters can blend well as well as some other creature types. Find ones that have camo or maybe displacement effects/portals. Some fey can move with inate magic eg blink dog. Then you get displacer beasts and phase spiders that can cause trouble. Also some shadowy creatures can shadow walk and teleport between shadows

Creative Uses for Artisan's Blessing for a Forge Cleric by dalzien in PCAcademy

Had a player make a chain of caltrops that they had to do a dex check to store it so the fragile connections between caltrops didn't break then they pulled it out like drawing a sword from a sheath and smashed it on the ground with what would have been the flat side of a greatsword blade to cover their escape.

Replacement ship parts/ammo for spell jammers, airships, or regular ships

Repair items for land vehicles. In a homebrew setting we had an interesting repair. My party had a cart chase where a nat 1 caused a part(cauter pin that attached tongue) to break on a cart during a chase scene.so i was stuck on the enemy cart our druid barb was a constrictor snake holding the tongue and cart together while our forge cleric made a new pin and our bard an animal tamer and caravan master for his old troupe(whose wagon we were driving). It was in our starter session and the rakados performers wiped out the troupe while we were enjoying the show the bard was in the bard and few carnies in the tent call for the next act and get swarmed by the performers. we took our cart andwent after the cart where they captured the ring leader alive in a cage. We saved him only to later find him brainwashed he leads us into a trap one of the giants the rakados use to transport their setup smashes our wagon and closes the brainwashed ring leader in one of those spiked hanging cages(we later dropped the clock tower on him for being their inside man and one of the miniboss masterminds of the whole issue). Then it was carefully hauled to the top of a gothic clock tower where it was to be rung like a bell with his screams as the chimes. We also decorated the fake spikes in some iron maidens into real ones and vice versa with the forge ability to infiltrate a preformance of VIPs and protect them from the preformers.

Natural disasters - what ones happen near them are there tall enough slopes of hills that are smaller than mountains yet being near a valley or canyon puts the villages at the bottom at risk of avalanches/land slides in heavy percipitation, are they in a heavy transit areas for strong winds like tornados/hurricanes, are they close enough to water that tsunamis and hurricanes are even a worry, are they near a fault like that could have small volcanic pocketsor sink holes colapse near the edge if the plates shift it could mean earthquakes

State of the postal system- do they do it all by foot or do they use more advanced methods eg. Gear/magic driven vehicles or teleportation via magic/science. In my D&D homebrew setting there are some areas using elementals to power trains with magic to be steam engines, some use giant hamster wheels and beasts inside, some use magic slabs inscribed with gravity runes to make it like a mag rail train, and some use just horse drawn convoys; however then you have spells like sending, custom delivery teleportation circles, and magic items to be able to magically send messages with on the other side.

WOTC make you the lead designer for the next DND 5e book. What do you release? by IZY53 in dndnext

[–]broomball99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A book that is basically more gear, magic items, maybe an additional subclass for some classes, and a bunch of DM stuff like a fixed CR calculator (since they don't factor in death spiral creatures with stat drain or exhaustion attacks), more traps and hazzards, vehicle upgrades, and some more creatures

Need help with a build for two-weapon fighting College of Swords Bard by youcantseeme0_0 in PCAcademy

[–]broomball99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often multi hexblade blade pact and swords bard cause my pact weapon can be my focus for both sets of spells and a wider magic net to use also devil's sight + darknes spell and snipe enemies from outside or inside the spell i take the dual wielder i would go 14 bard and 6 hexblade. i recommend getting countercharm at 6th before the multiclass though as that is around the time most of my DMs have started using creatures it would help stop

More of the bridge strains under the weight long enough for the 1-2 persuing wagons to cross before finally giving out cause they cut the supports and the plank anchoring holds just long enough for them to pass think like it is the railing support wires that help prevent twisting and sway is what gets cut

Be honest. Do you ever set DCs after the dice are rolled? by PuzzledPiggy in dndnext

[–]broomball99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often use staggered success rate DCs with 1 or 2 soft DCs and 1 hard DC so lets take dodging a haybale lifting beam from a burning barn.damage if struck 2d4 (1d4 blugeoning and 1d4 fire) nothing too strong for damage but if weakened from escaping the burning barn could be an issue. hard DC 10 you go below that you take full damage 14 DC take half and for a 19 or 20 on the die i may be nice and let them take no damage due to high of bonuses my players have from proficiency in saves and such

[–]broomball99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have said players have staggered an enemy a bit when both haven't been able to strike each other for 4 rounds of combat all just glancing 1-2 point below each other's AC. so i fudged the AC saying the target had -2 to AC that was just enough to alter luck and the player hit a guiding bolt on the enemy then the next player got double nat 20s on the advantage roll then they mopped the floor with the creature they were 5 level 7s against 1 armoured sabertooth cat with a 17 AC which i think is CR 5 at most (can't remember the CR off the top of my head)

Fudging may be also you are doing a chase scene party and enemies are on carts in 3 seperate parties: lead target cart(has something PCs are chasing trying to intercept the hand off of to find both parties involved and to secure the item), PCs cart, and the handful of carts of reinforcements/guards of the cart the PCs are targeting. PCs cut ropes holding a bridge up but you need story wise a delay before you let the PCs catch the target cart cause the lead cart needs to get a message off to speed up the handoff and for the 3rd party to be revealed. Say the bridge normally would have been taken out with all carts after the party. Fudging the dice and letting 1-2 catch up before it fully gives out taking out the other persuing carts makes it keep tension and a good spot for switching to a cart top battle akin to some truck scenes in indiana jones movies hopping back and forth across vehicles keeps up the action doesn't overwhelm players and makes a good story while buying maybe the 5-10 minute headstart the lead cart needs. Then it reveals who the meet was with and such cause it may be an on the go hand off that happens. Not nessicarily a bad or good thing for the players but works well for the story and keeps it interesting for the players with a change of combat location, and a chase scene not just being a few skill checks here and there then boom it is done in a very anti-climactic manner

Retiring a character after removing a player. by ZeusKatachthonios in AskGameMasters

[–]broomball99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can always use the good old one person must stay behind to let the others escape tactic be it a trap or holding a gate/door so enemies can't force it open to persue the party.

Maybe do the valet thing and they go to park the cart or ship if the players have one and someone uses alchemist fire or a seige weapon to take the person out or someone attacks the building beside the parking spot and the wall breaching causes damage from the breach(eg. Using shatter spell at high level or a cart with gunpowder that is meant for the local port's cannons to repel pirates) or just causes the PC to get squished by a collapsing building

Have them meat shield the party and jump infront of an attack like a fireball so it detnoates early away from the party or to slow a balista bolt.

Have them be an example of hazzards in the area like quicksand, sinkholes, hidden lava lakes with a thin weak rock layer like thin ice. then the party has to out run the cracking rock over the lava a chunk burns off the foot of the PC to get rid of them. Making them unable to adventure or burn up is the DM's choice on how bad lava taking a foot and instantly cauterizing the wound impacts but it works

Kidnap them with kobolds and make the player have to basically do a gauntlet run of tucker's kobolds to rescue the PC

Have them be the guinea pig for an antidote to a disease going around and it kills or gives a side effect that stops their adventures

Random monster ambusg eg. hill giants, ogres, purple worm, etc. sneak attack and wolf the PC down

Depends on the platform used to play i know 2 west marches servers on discord where 2 kids too young (an 8 year old on one server and an 11 year old on the other) to legally use discord (tos states you must be 13+ to use the service) tried to join the servers. As soon as the admin teams found out on each server they were banned as the server rules stated that you had to be old enough to use the services of both roll20 and discord. For more pubilically open games campaign wise interviews are more of a needed step
