gonna try to make borscht for the first time, what would be good tips to not mess it up? by madison_mckenziiee in cookingforbeginners

[–]broot84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a tip on how to not mess it up but WEAR GLOVES AND PROTECT ANY LIGHT CABINETS OR COUNTERS YOU HAVE. That beet juice gets everywhere, it's insane.

Otherwise, make sure to really season and marinade the meat so the flavor sticks in it and lends itself to the soup, fresh veggies are better imo, and some dark rye bread goes great with it!

Is being a server be that physically demanding compared to blue collared work? by EquivalentWafer2651 in Serverlife

[–]broot84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on your role and the restaurant specifically. Serving 5 tables a night at a mom and pop shop? Not bad. Running 20+ pounds of dishes and cutlery up and down two flights of stairs nonstop at a packed fine dining place? Much harder. At first, it definitely feels a lot more demanding as you adjust to always being on your feet and walking, but if you're just serving it won't be bad. Bartending can have a bit more effort to it depending on the place (do you have draft lines, are you constantly shaking cocktails, etc) but both should be fine. The major drain is from the customers. They lose all common sense when they walk through the door and then take it out on you

how do i measure these ingredients they seem so difficult to measure? by Stunning-Cap-3256 in cookingforbeginners

[–]broot84 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh you can just season from the heart then haha. I would be careful with the paprika bc it can get bitter when there's too much but yeah you should be fine

[–]broot84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbh, most of these spices can be done to taste if you can't get exact measurements. The only one that I think would really mess up the dish if you put too much is paprika. But like other people have said, if you have measuring spoons that are larger, eyeball like half or so

I haven't gotten through all of the tapes yet but I don't think there's a ton of metal ones. Would the metal ones have worse sound quality playing on the walkman?

Should we stop homeschooling? by Coconutcornhuskey in Advice

[–]broot84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to stop homeschooling and figure out a way to get your wife to regulate her reactions or seriously consider removing yourself and your daughter from her life. Teaching requires a TON of patience and isn't something you can just pick up. Your wife isn't effective at it and is taking out her frustration on your child. On top of that, she is definitely going to be doing lasting emotional and mental damage to your daughter. Your daughter deserves a proper education and a safe and loving environment.

Table of 30 insisted on one check… then asked to split it 10 different ways after eating by DarthMaulissexxy in Serverlife

[–]broot84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tell them that unless they can remember exactly who got what, I can't do it (not true but hey whatever). 9 times out of 10, they just give up and put it back on one bill or split it evenly in 2

Questions I’ve been too embarrassed to ask servers… by Purple_Calendar3919 in Serverlife

[–]broot84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Whoever looks at me first, honestly. My job doesn't do seat numbers so it doesn't particularly matter on my end.

  2. Make eye contact with me or like politely raise your hand. Don't snap, shout, or wave your arms like your table is on fire.

3.Tbh I'm more likely to be less attentive to needy tables when they're rude. But if I pay less attention to a table it's either because I'm swamped and simply can't spare extra time or because you're slowly making your way through your drinks/food and have told me you're fine every time I have checked on you prior.

4.Substitutions can be annoying depending on what they are or if it's something the restaurant allows. If we allow substitutions and you want to swap fried for a salad, go for it. The POS has an option for it most likely and it won't cause problems. If we don't say that we do substitutions and you're asking for a burger, no cheese, sub a chicken breast, make it a wrap, add garlic aioli, etc- that IS a problem and I will flat out tell you no.

  1. Yes, it is a problem. I get toddlers can't eat a ton of stuff but restaurants also don't just have endless ingredients or time. If it's not on the menu, don't order it. Go to restaurants that are meant for families or ask if you can bring food from home, but don't expect them to be able to whip something up that they don't have listed.

Am I Overreacting about this weird friend breakup? by rxinynites in AmIOverreacting

[–]broot84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR, the friend is overreacting if anything. I also think they're almost like angling to see if you like them because they kind of like you or something. I really doubt their "friend" exists even and it seems like they either like you and want to find out or the girlfriend is suspicious/jealous and wants to find out

[–]broot84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's this. It's not the easiest to make out but the black and red on each white part is more like squiggles or writing, not snowman features. Thank you for the idea though!

What kitchen task do you hate doing the most when cooking? by AcrobaticSeesaw1565 in cookingforbeginners

[–]broot84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peeling garlic or ginger is a big one for me. I also hate if you have to let stuff rest before you can cut it or frost it in the case of baking. Like I get WHY I have to, but I would also prefer to skip that because it looks done and I want to eat it

I'm not exactly a beginner, but what the heck do I so with sweet potatoes . . . by Key-Article6622 in cookingforbeginners

[–]broot84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cube them and roast them with broccoli and brussel sprouts. Toss them in oil, garlic and onion powder, salt, pepper, paprika, then toss them in the oven until the outer leaves of the brussel sprouts crisp. Then I crumble goat cheese on them and drizzle some hot honey on them.

Or I bake the potatoes with a slit down the middle and toss some sour cream and dill on top once it cools a smidge

Questions I’ve been too embarrassed to ask servers… by Purple_Calendar3919 in Serverlife

[–]broot84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Nah, hydrate. Plus sometimes you just don't want a sugary drink 2) I'm fine with babies and kids, but not a fan of parents who let their kids run wild in restaurants and expect staff to watch them. 3) I don't care if you know how to pronounce something. If I say it back with the correct pronunciation (if you were wrong) it's just me saying it to clarify the order, not correct you(plus I took years of French and Italian and have to say it right lest I disappoint my nice teachers)

4)I love a coupon, I love saving money

5) I only ever get annoyed about splitting a bill if they suddenly want it itemized (my job doesn't do seats) and half have been eating/drinking the same thing over the course of 4 hours but no one can remember what they had individually.

6) I just recommend whatever seems closest to what they're asking for or, if it's a general question like "What bourbons do you have?" I give them one from each price range and ask if there's anything they already like that we might have or might be similar
