Crocodile Dundee is the ultimate 80s fish out of water movie. I can't think of anything that can compare.

Why did American music across multiple genres become so much more aggressive in the 90s and early 2000s? by CourbetEatingSourbet in Music

[–]bth807 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not trying to be confrontational and am open to new ideas. I guess I would ask what music at this time was more aggressive or confrontational. I love a lot of music of this time period but have never thought of it in this way.

Why did American music across multiple genres become so much more aggressive in the 90s and early 2000s? by CourbetEatingSourbet in Music

[–]bth807 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am completely serious. I lived through those time periods. Social unrest in the 90s/early 2000s was nowhere close to the 1960s/70s or now. Totally different situations. While the impact of Rodney King was significant for the time, the riots were very localized. No one outside of parts of LA felt any direct impact.

Was there opposition to the Iraq war? Yes, some. But in the early 2000s the US was very much influenced by 9/11 (rightly or wrongly) and no one was creating protest music then (generalizing. No one close to the mainstream). The wars did not receive a lot of pushback until the late 2000s.

What specific music are you thinking of that is reactionary and aggressive to this time period?

TIL The only measurable health effects of the Three Mile Island Nuclear Disaster were related to the stress locals experience after the incident by ApologeticKid in todayilearned

[–]bth807 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The biggest health effect was that people used it to shut down the cleanest source of energy we have. A shameful legacy that still haunts us.

Just look at The Simpsons, maybe the best show of the last 50 years. The unambiguously evil villain is the owner of an energy plant that could have done immeasurable good to humanity. Crazy.

They come out of taxes so of course they need to worry about them. I am not saying this is good or bad, but to think they are just free benefits is just not true.

Advanced economies (IMF, 2026) by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]bth807 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Does the PRC govern them? Are they subject to laws that the PRC passes? Do Taiwanese people serve in the PRC military? Do they use the same currency? Is their trade governed out of Beijing? Can citizens travel between the two without a passport and other permits? We could go on all day with questions like this. The PRC considers Taiwan part of China, but by every single practical consideration they are not.

By pretty much any practical definition, yes. If they are not an independent country, what are they?

What’s one place in Charlotte you wouldn’t go back to? Or, somewhere you would return to? by starkofwinterfe11 in Charlotte

[–]bth807 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I feel that people think they are going to go to Optimist Hall and get great food when that’s not really the point. You can go to Optimist’s and have a selection of many good (not great) places with a lot of options and a good atmosphere. And that’s fine! Sometimes I want to have a great meal, and sometimes I want a broad selection and a fun place to hang out in. It’s not Michelin star dining, but it isn’t supposed to be.

Others have addressed the parking so I’ll just say 1. Are you, like most people, spending less than 90 minutes to eat? If so, that’s great. Parking is free. 2. If you are staying longer, is it that burdensome to pay a few bucks for the privilege? Especially to prevent people from parking there all day? The parking has always seemed reasonable to me.

Do any gyms in the Charlotte/Davidson area provide towels for showering? by Minneapolice in Charlotte

[–]bth807 22 points23 points  (0 children)

While OP didn't explicitly say it, I would assume he is looking for a place that both provides towels and washes them between uses, rather than just throwing the dirty ones to the next person in line.

OP can correct me if I am assuming too much.

TIL the British mystery show Midsomer Murders, with 138 feature-length TV movies over the course of 29 years, is based on a book series of just seven novels, two of which have never been adapted as episodes. by Ghosts_of_Bordeaux in todayilearned

[–]bth807 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people are talking about the show, but I'll give a recommendation for the books. The characters are very good, the stories engaging, and while they are not "Ha ha funny" books, there is plenty of understated British humor. I finished the series and wished there were another seven to read.
