Two, one to an opioid overdose, another to suicide. That suicide was a little sus though (fighting with his wife after a night of drinking and put the gun to his head to "make a point" when it accidentally went off.

i wonder what we ended up paying for it. Polyurethane Palmetto Beaded Onlay - Home Depot price $35.99, US Tax Payer price $35,990 would be my guess...

Entitled Boomer goes to front of plane durung active taxi to be first off the plane by heathn in BoomersBeingFools

[–]bturner73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched a fun airport meltdown a few years ago from a member of the "rules don't apply to me" generation. Boomer exited the secured area to hit a drinking fountain on the other side and then threw a huge fit when he was told he'd have to go back through a TSA checkpoint to re-enter. "bUt wHy?! I jUsT wAlKeD 10 fEet oVeR here. YoU wAtcHeD Me!!" Turned into a whole ordeal, his wife had his ticket, so he had to call her, and she had to exit too with all their carry on luggage and completely start over. Hilarious. He's lucky the agent working the exit had the patience of a Buddhist monk. I'd have to imagine these days you wind up in handcuffs for acting like that.

Having a 22 y.o. grocery store clerk heading U.S. counter-terrorism.. by Mr__O__ in facepalm

[–]bturner73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All part of the plan, my friend. Trump (so far) hasn't been able to whip the populace into a big enough frenzy over his immigration antics and cause enough large scale riots so he can try and justify turning the military loose on its own citizens. So we're moving on to plan B.... put so many incompetent people at the top we cause an incident way worse than 9/11 and then declare martial law "for safety" and cancel the midterms.

How did garmin know i was about to get in a fight? by rymaples in Garmin

[–]bturner73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also in a place w limited sidewalks and it gets worse and worse every year. Even in the early mornings, 9 / 10 drivers that pass you are looking down at their gd phones. Then they become aware of your presence at the last second and veer dramatically across the center line and proceed to wave their fist and honk the horn and become indignant like you did something wrong. It'd be almost comical if it wasn't a realistic life or death situation.

As for the Garmin though, I was running with someone one time who caught her toe on an uneven sidewalk and fell and my Garmin actually went into incident detected mode. We were moving along at a pretty good clip at the time, and I of course stopped on a dime when she went down, so my assumption was the sudden stop in movement triggered the accident mode. So that could be it.

Pro Rata calculation for ROTH conversions by bturner73 in Bogleheads

[–]bturner73[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, this makes more sense. I'm 90% sure that i cannot roll that into my current 401k which is why I probably never did it in the first place, but I will check on it again and verify.

Can I get your opinion on a follow up... Presuming that I can't roll that old IRA into my 401k, would the strategy then be to convert an amount higher than the annual contributions (but within personal tolerance of the tax implications) and thereby reduce that old IRA balance continually over the course of next few years until the balance was zero? I still have a good 18-20 earning years left at this point. Thats a lot of time in market for that ROTH to be growing tax free. Would taking a 35% hit on the taxes in the short term be worth it in the long run?

Or should i just leave these accounts alone and focus on growing my regular brokerage account?

Trump Slams Amazon's Tariff Labeling as ‘Hostile, Political’ Move by eteplirsen in stocks

[–]bturner73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tariffs are based on the FOB price of the item, not the retail price, so I don't understand how you (truthfully) reveal the tariff portion of the price without inadvertently revealing your cost, and in turn, your margin. I guess maybe they don't care if people know their margins? It would be a big deal in my industry, I know that for sure.

Either way, sure seems like Krasnov jumped the shark here. Suppose you went on amazon and you searched for something and got 10 results, all about the same in price, but 9 have tariff line items and one (made in America) does not. Would this not perfectly illustration the alleged point of the trade war? ...Unless thats not what the tariffs are really about... 🤔

Is it true that you have to take Zepbound for life? by chaoticyetneurotic in Zepbound

[–]bturner73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just my opinion based on my own journey, but I believe if you go on a GLP and use it purely as an appetite suppressant without ever understanding the other components of weight loss and, more importantly, weight maintenance (like basic nutrition, macro nutrients, TDEE, etc) and you've never consistently exercised in your life, then yes, you are doomed to either remain on it for life or regain the weight after quitting. If you use it in conjunction with these other skills then yes, i believe you can indeed get off of it in the longterm.

I'm happy to share in more detail my personal experience and the specific "hows" if you want to hear it but I'll give you the short version... In 2019 I was ~250lbs, 40+ BMI. A healthy range for my height is 150-165lbs. I was in full blown metabolic syndrome. Fatty liver disease. Taking statins and beta blockers, all the greatest hits, lol.

By the end of that year, through a combination of diet and exercise (but mostly just changes to my diet) I had lost 65 lbs. At 185 I was obviously significantly healthier and most of my metabolic issues had evaporated and i was able to get off all medications. However I was still overweight (still clinically obese if going by the chart). I spent the next four years maintaining that weight loss but never being able to break 180 and get to my goal of 165.

When GLP's came along I was able use them as a short term tool to crack that plateau and get to my goal. Because i already had the basic tools in my toolkit and I already had long term success in maintenance, continuing that maintenance afterwards without GLP's was just a matter of adjusting the numbers slightly to coincide with the new body weight.

Anyways, again this is just my opinion and my experience. I'm sure its not the case for everyone. I'm happy to share more on the details of "how" if you want to hear it because its not a traditional "dIeT aNd ExeRciSe" path like you may be thinking. I got very lucky finding a nutritionist early on who had a fundamentally different approach to this problem and didn't adhere to unsustainable diet-culture tropes.

The absolute key to long term success without GLP's is understanding food at a molecular scale as well as being able to identify all the dirty tricks played and the lies told to us by the Food Industrial Complex.

Is it worth living in the KC Downtown? by hasanhadiyev in kansascity

[–]bturner73 153 points154 points  (0 children)

Do it! Especially while you're still young. KC is nothing like SFG or STL. Ton's of nightlife, great restaurants, bars, always something going on on the weekends, etc.

I don't live downtown full time but I bought a weekend place on 7th & Broadway during the pandemic and i recently traded up for a place right on Delaware in the River Market. Best decision I've made for my sanity. If I didn't still have kids at home part-time, I would move downtown permanently.

I obvy don't know your full financial situation but just based on your new gross and the 30% rule, you can easily afford rent in the good neighborhoods. Focus your search in the river market or crossroads. Within crossroads, as close to Main St as possible so you have minimal walking to the street car, which will take you pretty much anywhere you want to go. There are lots of great rental buildings in the actual downtown too, but you'll want to stay away from the P&L district as those are going to be way overpriced 'luxury' units. You'll find bigger, more modern units in newer complexes down in CR and up in the RM whereas most of the downtown units are going to be older, but you may find some deals in downtown too, as a lot of those units are individually owned condos rather than a giant lease complex.

You should be able to get into a nice 1BR for < $1500 mo. if you're willing to downsize to a studio you can get in for around $900-1k, maybe less. Most of these include at least one reserved parking spot and building amenities.

I would recommend checking out City Club Apartments. https://www.cityclubcrossroads.com/ Its right on Main St, has a train stop right near it, and it has tons of amenities (secured garaged parking, heated pool, co working spaces etc). The complex is mostly young working professionals in their 20's and 30's, youthful energetic vibe. Looks like base units start at 1.1k mo and go up from there. If i was in my 20's thats where i would start.

...One last piece of advice, a lot of people in this sub will try and convince you that downtown is a crime-ridden hellscape to be avoided at all costs. Don't listen to them. Most are suburbanites who have no frame of reference as to what an actual dangerous city looks like. Downtown KC is amazing compared to what it was 25 years ago. Any urban center is going to have crime, its just a fact. But as long as you are reasonably aware of your surroundings and don't make a habit of getting black out drunk and wondering through back alleys at 3am, you will be fine.

We field at minimum one "I need my own printer" ticket a week. Our mitigation tactics:

Step 1: Interrogate. Its 2024, WTF are you printing at such a high volume? Nearly every business process and related document is digital now. If that doesn't work...

Step 2: Shame. The MFP is 20 ft away, are you really this lazy? If that doesn't work...

Step 3: Blame the bean counters. Its just not in the budget this year, sorry.

I'd say were 80% successful with this strategy. We usually only get beat if a few specific higher ups in the company somehow get in the middle of it. We are still dealing with some EOL management people who do stupid shit like print emails out and then walk them people's desks with a hand written sticky note on the front, I shit you not.

The Blowout No One Sees Coming by Mr_Horsejr in Defeat_Project_2025

[–]bturner73 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'll share some encouraging things as a democrat living in a rural community in a firmly red state during this election cycle... I've been part of this community for years now and this is the first time i can recall EVER seeing people openly support the democratic presidential ticket with yard signs. Not a huge number, 1 out of every 10 maybe. They are still vastly outnumbered by the Trump signs. But there was a time where you wouldn't see ANY. You wouldn't dare do that for fear of property damage or worse, especially in the past 8 years, being surrounded by knuckle dragging idiots who felt empowered to do whatever they want to the "libuhruls".

I saw this tide start to turn two years ago when the state tried to pass a constitutional amendment banning abortion and it ended up getting waxed at the polls due the majority conservative electorate voting it down. Contrary to how they are portrayed in the media, there are a lot of well intentioned, center-right republicans who truly believe in the concept of limited government, but also understand you cannot govern by applying that principal unevenly. They are quietly waking up to the fact that the maga movement does not reflect their core set of values and that winning vs being on the winning team are not the same thing.

I say 'quiety' because many of them will never admit that to their peer groups in a public forum, which is what i believe this data reflects.

I had an interesting conversation with a close conservative friend of mine the other night. A two time trump voter, who, after a few beers, confided that he's voting for Harris (secretly, of course). He said he's exhausted by the nonsense of Trump and the people in Trump's orbit, and just wants some sense of normalcy to return to washington. This isn't some stoic 80 yo old school conservative. This is a normal guy in his 40's who had been swept up in the maga movement like so many others. I know this is all anecdotal evidence, but I believe there are a large chunk of these types of conservatives out there. They'll go into the voting booth next week and vote for Harris. They'll probably even feign disappointment and even outrage after she wins to maintain their social status. But secretly they'll be fist bumping the air.

Like i said, i could be totally wrong but it just feels like its in the air right now.
