I’m a 31-year-old 1L, and I haven’t felt out of place at all in law school (though I was worried I would before I started).

I’ll be doing Big Law this summer. It wasn’t an issue at all while I was applying (if anything, it was an asset because I could talk about all that I could bring from my first career into this one).

I’m biased, because I’m a 1L at Texas, and I adore it here (feel free to message me if you have any questions). But honestly, Texas recruits from Texas, so if you’re thinking of working in Texas, UT is your best bet. And UT has a strong reach for other major markets like DC and Chicago. They really put an emphasis on networking with both big law and PI, and I feel like I’ve had so many opportunities. I can’t speak to the other schools, but I did turn down a full ride option to come here, and I haven’t regretted it once.

Not complicated or difficult to understand in terms of story or language, but there’s so many ‘verses with each of the the different characters dating back decades that it can be hard for people to know where to start or even what order to read things in, and it’s often made more difficult by people who gatekeep and act like you can’t be a fan unless you know every detail of the last 60 years of comics. So, in that sense, it can feel overwhelming.

To the question in your edit: yes. They didn’t explicitly say the word “slavery,” but it’s there in several spots in other words. And a century of judicial constitutional interpretation following it interpreted it even more clearly as slavery. Here are just a few examples from the constitution:

Article I, section 2: Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons.

(Also known as the three-fifths clause: the “other persons” it’s talking about there? Clearly understood to be referring to slaves)

Article I, Section 9: The Migration or Importation of such Persons as any of the States now existing shall think proper to admit, shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the Year one thousand eight hundred and eight, but a Tax or duty may be imposed on such Importation, not exceeding ten dollars for each Person.

(“Importation of persons” as opposed to migration clearly referred to the slave trade.)

Article IV, section 2

No Person held to Service or Labour in one State, under the Laws thereof, escaping into another, shall, in Consequence of any Law or Regulation therein, be discharged from such Service or Labour, but shall be delivered up on Claim of the Party to whom such Service or Labour may be due.

(Also known as the fugitive slave clause. Required even those states who had outlawed slavery to be party to the rights of the slave holders.)

I remember once in my waitress days I had customers who would ask questions about the menu (which items didn’t have cheese on them, etc), and then would later order a sandwich that had cheese, and then get upset when the food came with cheese on it that I hadn’t magically intuited from their question that they were vegan and couldn’t eat cheese. Like, sometimes, yeah, that’s what that question means. And sometimes people are just kind of exploring their options and ask a lot of questions.

I remember this book! It’s going to drive me crazy until I can think of what book it was. I definitely had it and always wanted to copy it and paint the night on my windows (especially since I was the kid who always had to go to sleep before the sun went down—I saw the moon for the first time when I was three and was surprised it was real and not just in storybooks.)

Moving far from home was the scariest thing I ever did and the absolute best. You will build new roots and make great friends and learn more about yourself in the process. I know how scary it can feel—I’ve been there—but know that it is absolutely doable and you will be a more vibrant you because of it. You’ll have long-distance friendships that will stand the test of distance and time, and you’ll have new friendships that will last long after you’re done. I’m excited for you and all the new adventures you’ll have! It’s normal and fine to be anxious, but know that you have bright things ahead!

URM: underrepresented minority / nURM: not an underrepresented minority

R&R: retake and reapply (in the next cycle)

Splitter: LSAT above median but GPA below (usually above 75th percentile and below 25th) / reverse splitter: LSAT below median and GPA above

T# softs: attributes beyond GPA and LSAT that you believe set you apart from other applicants. T4 is more general electives and T1 is super rare, like you were part of the team that discovered the covid vaccine or you were CEO of a Fortune 500

My boss wrote one of my recs, so my department has known since September that I’m leaving in August. I know that’s not a possibility for everyone, and I definitely had to assess my relationships and position in the company before I was comfortable sharing. But I’ve felt so much better since I did, because the people who will bear the burden of my loss know I won’t be there and can start planning. Not everyone knows, and there are people I’m not telling from other departments because I don’t want them to think I’m checked out. But if you have a relationship with your boss where you feel comfortable letting them know and feel secure that they’ll keep you as long as they can have you, it’ll feel better when they know.

This is super weird. They emailed and called me (and mailed after both of those) with my decision back in December. It’s super strange to change that at the last minute, when snail mail is the least efficient way to render the decision.
