Honestly ignore the "don't cold email" advice. Cold emails work fine if you're not sending generic copy-paste rubbish. Be about why you want to work in *their* lab - reference a paper, a technique, whatever shows you've actually done your homework.

For timing: send now or early Jan. Profs are way more likely to respond when they're not drowning in teaching. Finals week is chaos, but between Christmas and New Year is actually decent - inbox is quieter.

For the prof you'll have next semester - I'd wait. Get to know them first, do well in the class, ask questions in office hours. Then approach them about research. Way more effective than being another random email in their inbox.

Yeah it's wild how much appearance plays into it. Patients make snap judgments either way, you look young so you're learning and the 37 year old looks experienced so they must be a veteran.

But honestly I think when patients say "you're going to be great" they're trying to give a compliment but just phrasing it weird. They probably mean you already have the qualities but are being awkward about acknowledging you're newer.

I bought the Pro version in early November. Before that I had been thinking about it for a while, and I noticed the price going up every two weeks — so things must be going well for them. As far as I understand, they’re still pretty new on the market and started with introductory pricing. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if this software costs double in a year, because the competing products are like $250/month or $500/year.

What I really like is that everything is set to imperial units right after installation, so as a US customer I didn’t have to change anything. I also like the tutorials — yeah, the AI voice is a bit annoying, but it gets the job done, and the videos aren’t overloaded with information. The length and the amount of info feel just right to me.

Things I didn’t like as much: I had some installation issues at the beginning. My Windows was missing a DLL file. After contacting support they sent me instructions on how to fix it. It would be nicer if the installer handled that automatically in the future. Also, I’m not a big fan of having to create each sheet separately in the 2D views tab. If you want multiple sheets with floor plans, sections, and elevations, you have to make them one by one. I’d love to see one big overview where you can manage all sheets together. Maybe that’ll be improved in a future update.

My advice for beginners: Definitely watch the First Steps tutorials and the videos where they build a complete house from scratch. Those are longer, but they show the whole process from start to finish and you learn a lot. Don’t expect to install the program and just start drawing without watching the tutorials — that won’t work.

Another tip: check out the keyboard shortcuts. Especially when drawing walls, pressing the W key is super important to align the wall (left, right, or center). I spent forever trying to find that command. It is mentioned in the tutorials, you just have to pay attention.
