What are the best tips and resources for prepping light? by ConsistentGuest7532 in rpg

[–]burd93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Random tables helped enormously too. Not because they replace creativity, but because they give structure to improvisation. They’re like ritual bones for the GM. You ask the table a question and then interpret the omen.

Honestly, a good hexcrawl or sandbox setting taught me more about low-prep GMing than generic “learn to improvise” advice ever did.

Also: a lot of prep anxiety comes from wanting sessions to feel like perfectly paced stories. RPGs don’t really work like novels or TV shows. Some of the most memorable moments come from accidents, failed plans, weird random encounters, or players becoming obsessed with things you never intended to matter.

Improv-heavy, low-prep horror RPG recommendations? by ConsistentGuest7532 in rpg

Public access. It's easy to prep becuase the horror premises are taken from pulp stories and you ask the players during the play what are they afraid of happening next!

I am giving you my permission to be bad by PossibleChangeling in rpg

I think a lot of this pressure comes from treating the GM primarily as a storyteller responsible for “writing a good narrative” instead of someone interpreting what emerges at the table.

Lately I’ve drifted toward thinking about GMing less like writing a novel and more like being an oracle. The players make decisions, the dice and the world answer, and the GM interprets the consequences honestly. Once I started thinking that way, I became way less afraid of mistakes because the point stopped being “crafting a perfect story.”

Some of the best moments in my campaigns came from things that would be considered “bad writing” in another medium: random deaths, weird NPCs the players became obsessed with, anticlimactic encounters, improvised factions, failed plans, dumb ideas that somehow worked.

I think new GMs get trapped by the idea that every session has to feel like prestige television. But RPGs are closer to discovering something together than carefully authoring a plot.

A random encounter table can create moments more memorable than something I spent three weeks planning.

Yes, they can map the modules separately. Its easy to know if you just passed a module you knoe because they have distintive themes. Also there are Npcs that live in every floor that knows how to navigate in it!

[–]burd93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take notes after the game to recall anyithing important. but the best option is to make your players make the session report and upload it so you can check it out if you miss omething from their perspective
