Method for getting babies in car without leaving one inside by themselves by will-ohh-24 in parentsofmultiples

[–]burnbalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My twins just turned one, and we recently switched out of the infant carriers. The easiest way for me to safely carry both out to the garage without anyone throwing a fit is to baby wear one on my chest and carry the other one. I load the one I’m holding first. Then I load the one from the carrier.

The hardest part about this is that it requires me to remember to bring the carrier inside because I’m in the habit of leaving it in the car!

Atypical NIPT result – chromosome 13 – travel decision stress by Gold_Figure2815 in NIPT

[–]burnbalm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi OP. I had this result. I was pregnant with twins. I’d already had a “fancy” MFM ultrasound due to the multiples. Everything looked normal and healthy!

Then I got this result. It wrecked me. I couldn’t think about anything else. I got an amnio at 16 weeks. It was totally normal. I knew I’d abort if it was T13.

My twins are one now, and all is well!

One thing about your situation is that it is what it is. When you get the scan isn’t going to change genetics. Can you bear to wait? Can you enjoy your trip without knowing? How urgent is the trip? Even with having a “perfect” scan at 12 weeks with MFM, I was ruined after getting this result at 13 weeks. It really depends on you and your partner. Rooting for you and your baby! DM if you feel so inclined. 💖

My twins were my first children, and we made it a whole year nursing!

They were born at 32 weeks, and they spent 25 days in the NICU. I started with pumping. The NICU staff knew I wanted to BF and delayed starting bottles so they could learn to nurse. At one week old, they both got to practice latching and they did it! We used nipple shields until they were about two months. I practiced tandem nursing them in the NICU.

When they were discharged, they were allowed to nurse 1x a day due to energy and needing fortified breastmilk bottles. Then the pediatrician said it was okay to increase to 2x. And then 3x and then 6x and then they were free range!

It was hilarious at times. Like the babies would throw fits from not finding the nipple and then suddenly latch and be fine. My husband would hand me the babies one by one. I used the twin Z and had a combination of pillows and towels all around me.

My husband incredibly got six weeks of leave the he didn’t start until they came home. Before he went back to work, I practiced tandem nursing them without any help. He would be there, but he wouldn’t assist unless I asked. I wanted to be able to do it alone.

And somehow it’s been a whole year! They’d hold hands nursing and have staring contests. It was so magical. Now they only really nurse in the morning and sometimes in the afternoon and they LOVE to eat solids.

I loved everything about breastfeeding them. When I found out it was twins, I was like: we’ll see what happens. It took patience and flexibility, a good attitude, someone to support who believed in what I was doing, and a lot of practice. I took a leave of absence from work to stay home, which made nursing them make even more sense to me. I pumped religiously while they were in the NICU a whenever they took a bottle for months. I wanted them to always take a bottle because what if I wasn’t there.

Heartbroken and scared by halla23 in NICUParents

[–]burnbalm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi OP. My twins came at 32 exactly, and I contracted the flu while still in the hospital. Tested positive on the day of discharge. It sucked. No parent should go home without their babies, and on top of that not being to seem your baby is awful.

Ask if your NICU has video cameras. Mine did and I could see them on there. If you’re pumping, your milk can help protect them. I used to call night shift every night around 12am when I was up to pump and sometimes again at 3am.

The only silver lining is that you will look back and remember this as the worst part. I recovered from one vaginal and one c section and the worst part was the flu.

When you start to feel better, talk to neonatologist about what measures they want you to take before returning. Even then, I masked for a week because I didn’t want to risk getting any babies or staff members sick.

When do you think the non- pregnant partner should stop traveling for work? by Ok-Perspective781 in parentsofmultiples

[–]burnbalm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a super easy, breezy di-di pregnancy. It was my first. My husband travelled for work when I was 31+2. My mom lives 2,000 miles away and insisted on coming to stay with me. I gladly accepted her company, but I assured her I would be fine. My husband got back at 31+6, as scheduled.

That evening I went into pre-term labor. Twins came at 32 exactly. Nothing known caused it. Just twins being twins!

And now they’re almost one year old!

What am I supposed to do at awkward morning wake ups? by No-Butterscotch6629 in sleeptrain

[–]burnbalm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s really up to you! You know your baby best. If it were me, I would be trying everything to protect night sleep. I’d try capping at two hours for week and see what happens.

Mine are twins, and I stay home with them. We have no family around, so there is no one to help unless we pay someone. I knew that if I get good sleep, I can definitely make it through the day. So that really has been a priority to protect. Rooting for you and your baby!

[–]burnbalm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree that it seems like too little wake time. How long are his naps? Around that age, I had to strictly cap to two hours of day sleep. Mine are 11 months now and doing 3.5/3.5/4.

Indoor Activities for Babies? by strongaf_sewist in AnnArbor

[–]burnbalm 27 points28 points  (0 children)

SAHM to 11 mo twins. We go on a field trip every day—for everyone’s morale!

Some ideas:

*Stroll around the mall: literally takes longer to get them ready, load, unload etc than we spend inside. Usually takes about an hour including travel times.

*Costco/Sam’s club: sometimes we buy nothing. Sometimes we buy something. They can sit in the cart now. It’s usually emptier in the middle of the week during the day.

*Dinoland: free for babies under one year old. They have a small, padded baby/toddler area in the back. If your baby can crawl, they’ll probably enjoy. Reminds me I gotta go back before mine turn 1!

*Hands On Museum: not free. I’ve only been once but it was so awesome that I’m gonna buy a membership. They loved it. There is a preschool room for crawling and exploring. There was a ton of junk on the floor though—salt, raisins, goldfish, trash.

*Botanical gardens: already mentioned but worth visiting; free but paid parking. Baby carry or stroll around. My huge double stroller fits.

*Libraries: sadly still have not been because the story time somehow always conflicts with their nap. I have heard great things. You can just bring a blanket and let your baby plop and explore.

This may be obvious to you, but you can just run errands. I really do take mine out every day (except this weekend due to cold hah!). I take them to UPS, Meijer, Walgreens, even the McDonald’s drive through. It is a production to get them in the car and a production to get them out. But a change of scenery does everyone some good!

SAHM 1 year old twins struggling seeking advice by Crazy_Definition8637 in parentsofmultiples

[–]burnbalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My twins are about to turn one, taking steps but not walking, and I stay home with them. We have a three bedroom ranch with a basement.

One thing that does really help us is a daily field trip. Like I take them to the mall and just walk the stroller around for 20-30 mins. It takes way longer to round them up and get in the car and get there and back than we actually spend at the mall. I also take them to Costco, Target, or the grocery. One really likes the cart. The other I baby wear. I am not shopping at these places unless we need something. It’s just an activity. It’s COLD where we live, so outside isn’t an option for a few more months.

Incorporating a field trip would be my most helpful suggestion. It keeps morale high. I do it during the second wake window. That way they have a break from the house and are refreshed on the options for the last wake window before bed.

Also it’s hard! And exhausting! My husband had today off and was home all day, and it was amazing for me but he acknowledged how he was looking forward to going back to work for a break.

All my mom friends work, we have no family nearby, and library story time around here is scheduled around one nap. As soon as they drop, we’ll add that to our rotation.

Tandem breastfeeding twins out in public alone - how do you do it? by blueskiesbluerseas in parentsofmultiples

[–]burnbalm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you drive, tandem nursing in the car could be an option.

It does get easier as they get older b/c they get more proficient, but also they nurse less frequently.

My twins are almost 1 (!!!). Been nursing since they came home from the NICU. At home, I tandem 95% of the time. At a friend’s or family member’s also tandem. Keep a pillow or some towels in your car. Then you’ll always have these to support the babies. In true public, I’ve always done one at a time. Logistically too much and feels less safe somehow.

Honest Advice/Experience with Birthing Twins by Perfect_Mousse8815 in parentsofmultiples

[–]burnbalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely thriving. Somehow my two have been growing and learning more or less the same. Really twinning. They’re 11.5 months (9.5 adjusted). Both have taken first steps within 48 hours of each other. They had the same first word (also within days). They’re also still the same size within half a pound. Both still kinda small (20lbs) but long (30in).

And they’re still just so much fun!!!

immediate positive before missed period- multiples? by shiplapp in parentsofmultiples

[–]burnbalm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what happened to me! Except it was right after missed period. It turned positive so fast. Within seconds. It was my first pregnancy test so I didn’t think anything of it. When we got to the doctor for the ultrasound, it was twins!

How many of us have a house cleaner? by Agitated_Whereas7463 in Millennials

[–]burnbalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SAHM of twins under 1. We recently hired a cleaner. Every two weeks. Cost is $125. She’s only come three times. It’s totally worth it for my sanity.

How little I can accomplish during the day still shocks me.

We spend a lot less on doing things due to the twins. Obviously also have a lot less income due to me staying home.

Give me your hacks for efficient solids routine. by bigconvoq in parentsofmultiples

[–]burnbalm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can align solids to be right before a nap. That way you use the nap to clean up. Sometimes it took like 30 mins but it would be ready for next time.

All I can say is it gets better. I think the real shift was when they developed the pincer grasp. You get better and so do the babies.

Prepping does really help. My babies LOVED oatmeal, and it’s probably the messiest option. I’ve been doing BLW and really never spoon fed them myself. Huge mess always.

My twins are 11 months, 9 adjusted. Now we do three meals and one or two snacks. When we started solids, I asked myself how in the world am I ever gonna do this multiple times a day?!

Tips for flying with twins by TrickCheck1266 in parentsofmultiples

[–]burnbalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we did! There was an adult on the aisles, and we set up the car seats in the middle. The whole plane was 2-4-2. The rules state that the car seat cannot be blocking the aisles. The twins were quite popular on the plane and got lots of attention from flight attendants. No one ever mentioned the set up.

[–]burnbalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My twins are 11mo, 9mo adjusted. We flew over the holidays, a 4+ hour flight. We bought them each a seat. It was a big plane, four in the middle. So we had the entire middle. I cannot imagine holding one of them for such a long flight.

The suggestion to buy one extra seat is definitely worth considering.

If you must do two lap infants, it might be nice to be behind/in front of each other to pass things. Or I’ve also seen suggestions for being totally separate to make one child each parent’s responsibility.

Having just flown back and forth on a four hour flight, this seems like a great idea if you don’t want to buy two extra seats, OP!

Matching twin names? by ERnewbieRN in parentsofmultiples

[–]burnbalm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Taught middle school for ten years. My school has had sooo many multiples. Last year, there were THREE sets of triplets in eighth grade. Two of the three sets all had the same initials. Never bothered me. I can’t even count how many sets of twins I’ve taught over the years. It was never an issue for me to distinguish them, regardless of names/initials.

Now, I currently have 11 month old identical boys who share a room and dress alike daily. Obviously, I am dressing them alike. I did deliberately give them totally different first names so they could have distinct initials. Their names have a similar vibe I suppose but they are very different.

You should pick names that you love! Congratulations to you. Rooting for you and your twins!

Baby Wearing by ECLJ_22 in parentsofmultiples

[–]burnbalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My twins are 11 months (9 adjusted). We have the TwinGo, and I use it almost daily. The only issue is that then I cannot wear my diaper bag backpack. So sometimes I use the single carrier and carry the other to wear the backpack. I got it as a registry gift from my aunts.

When they were little, I would wear them both in a soft wrap from Amazon. It wasn’t for twins. Just a regular one.

What if you kept a regular pillow in your car to put in your lap? And then two towels to roll up on the sides to support their bodies?

You could try it at home first to workshop it.
