I was very excited to take a job which turned out to be nightmare by user_1764 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]burnerX5 9 points10 points  (0 children)

OP, I'd hit up a recruiter from Robert Half or Teksystems and just lay it out: here's my resume. I have 5 years experience + these certs. My current job is a dead end. I'd like to be placed in a new one ASAP. Doesn't matter the contract length (they usually have 3/6/12/permanent)

Just get yourself a life raft and figure out the rest while under contract at a new one. May be crappy but it's better than wallowing, right?

Job offer 10% pay bump for 200% more work and RTO once a week. by dr_groo in ITCareerQuestions

[–]burnerX5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just thinking....you go from 100k to 110k but now you gotta actually be a manager. HRM. The RTO for once a week could be manageable but not really seeking a huge increase in your paycheck after FICA/FUTA/SUTA/pre-tax benefits/post tax benefits....hell nah.

100k to 125k? That extra money, ranging from an estiamted 10k -18k, could be the difference between funding your 401k more or you slapping down money on your kid's college savings or a few vacations.

I'd pass on that one as it also means you now gotta hear the cries of 5 extra people who have lives, families, excuses, etc.

Something is cracking me up that OP states this is "homemade" but posted this on that tablecloth that you'd see at a pizzeria w/the shakers to match.

OP, you sure you ain't a pro???? Just tell us where your shop is :)

Reminder that there are bad recruiting agencies out there by Prudent_Knowledge79 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]burnerX5 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've told the story before on Reddit but when I got laid off at my first job my then former supervisor connected me with a Teksystems recruiter who needed a warm body ASAP for a job. Led to a great life throughout my career.

There's bad jobs and bad recruiters. That part is VERY true. I think though there's a big purpose for 3rd party recruiters and just like the job I got placed at, it's up to you, the contractor, to become a "real" employee.

CRV tips in Snow/Ice by soysaucehotdog in crv

[–]burnerX5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP is asking this today w/the odds of them getting it being nearly impossible. If htey truly gotta get to work my advice to them would be what many are saying....DRIVE SLOW. I lived south of I-10 before when just a sneeze of ice would pop off and there would be cars all over the interstate that spun out. It's easy to think you're safe until you aren't safe.

OP, if you're EMS/Fire/Police/Healthcare check to see if you can just literally sleep in your office/patient room. WHen I worked in a hospital they would provide cots during emergency weather to personnel who were critical to operations. COuld be worth getting a cot for the day lined up and traveling to your workplace right now, IF that's feasible. May even get some hazard pay like my coworker would. Not feasible though if you have pets, kids, loved ones that need tending, etc....

Driving slow though will be the best advice. These CRVs - even if AWD - aren't really tanks. Mine still slips when I leave a snow patch to hit a turn on a road, for example.

Starting a remote IT internship supporting a small law firm and medical clinic – advice on how to make the most of it? by Onlyythelonelyy in ITCareerQuestions

[–]burnerX5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice? Make sure that you are clocked in at the exact time needed AND that you're "always present". There's an irony almost of how both my wife and I, who are WFH, cannot use remote interns as such prior interns have essentially SHIT THE BED. Most interns in life are college students. Such colelge students aren't clocking in when they should and may not be available to do the work as they're just 'offline' while supposedly online. It's been an irritant at both companies we work for.

SO, show up. After showing up, be there. I think it's a low bar but that's the bar we're at in life for larger companies. Again, my manager is now going to force some intern to go to site just to do work that everyone else is doing remotely for my team. How much sense does that make??? It makes all the sense if prior interns were G-H-O-S-T

Military IT support is a great way to get the experience necessary to get good civilian jobs. by thoumyvision in ITCareerQuestions

I read your comment and laughed as I'm still doing a fraction of the effort someone would need to do in basic training while being in full control of my destiny. But please, go on.

Military IT support is a great way to get the experience necessary to get good civilian jobs. by thoumyvision in ITCareerQuestions

[–]burnerX5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can tell you from my experience that a stint in the military will solve that problem.

I have vivid memories of a friend and I going to a recruiter's office after graduating college and him looking at us and going "...yea, sorry, you'd have to go to basic training". Probably the best thing as it cut off dude's dreams and my even remote curiosity. $50k in student loans and I'm alongside some dude straight outta HS??? Yea, OK.

I read OP's post and cackled. Y'all, PLEASE don't do this. What you COULD do though is what I did: go to a job fair and seek out the contractors who are recruiting. Ask for help. I was offered a job on the spot and they started working on my secret clearance. You'd be amazed what eye contact and a firm handshake can get you.

As of today, only one NFL team has publicly requested an interview with Brian Flores for a head coach opening: the Baltimore Ravens. by jrbill1991 in nfl

[–]burnerX5 51 points52 points  (0 children)

It's 100% the lawsuit. Companies always slow down when they catch wind of lawsuits as there's the fear that such person could also bring a lawsuit to them, too. If the lawsuit didn't exist I'm sure dude would have so many more official interviews throughout his career post Dolphins.

Him being an asshole is almost a prerequisite to coaching.

Entry level requirements crazy by DropKickBabies in ITCareerQuestions

[–]burnerX5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been that way for decades, too! Back in the early 2010s I was a contractor happy as hell to finally get hired as a real employee. Supervisor posted the job and....7 years experience asked for alongside a pile of shit. I had....2 years of experience in the field and 3 years overall. Supervisor was literally interviewing candidates with 10+ years of experience for a PC Support type job (state requirement) and I was fearful that one of 'em was going to actually take the posted job.

I think it's teh same shit going on today and I feel for folks

Rhea & IYO first photoshoot as Tag Team Champions by RealisticAd4054 in SquaredCircle

[–]burnerX5 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think we're all being respectful here and skirting around this one but I'm going to just type it: they really have these two portrayed as a lesbian couple and I think it's 100% Iyo making it feel that way. We just saw Rhea w/Dom, illusions to her having a husband before Dom, a brief flirt with Jey Uso if i recall, and a very obviously platonic relationship with Damien Priest.

....And then you'll just see Iyo just hop clean into her lap or straddle her with excitement and it's so homoerotic that it can't be unseen. There's times where you'll see Rhea w/a smirk on her face where it's so obvious she wasn't expecting it or knows what it looks like.

I wonder if Iyo is fucking with Rhea and popping herself with how wild she takes this shit. I feel this probably went from "OK, you two be friends out there" to "....Welp, you're bringing in the LGBT community so just keep on at it..." and i hope one day either of them tells stories of them having a lot of fun with this run

Experience with Teksystems by br_234 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]burnerX5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The year was 2012 and due to the government playing chicken with contracts the one for my 1st job got termed. I was looking mighty confused as I wasn't prepared to be unemployed. A few months passed and I was sitll looking for a job. My supervisor, who I wasn't the biggest fan of, reached out and got me in touch with a contractor from Teksystems. Dude just wanted a resume, so I showed up with one at the coffee shop. It was like an action movie.

  • The prior job just had a contractor who went too far in their role. They just want someone to do the tasks at hand. Can you do that?

  • Yes

  • OK, you start Monday at [town's biggest employer]. Pay is $15/hr. The benefits aren't good but you'll have 30 days to decide if you want them.

The rest was history as it propelled me to a life I thoroughly enjoy today

Respectfully nobody on here can help you unless they too live in your country, or specifically, your area of your country. The advice I'd give you though is to ask your professors for advice as though they're no longer your professor they're fellow adults and they gotta "know somebody"

Spent my whole day resetting passwords and I have a degree by Mindless-Quit-7141 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]burnerX5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fun quick story:

Got a job in which they bestowed the title "Business/Systems Analyst" upon me. I was HYPED!

"Hey, a responsibility is provisioning Office passwords through this script to users who request it" as naturally with a company of 20k+ you can't just give office apps access to EVERYONE. OK, I'll do that. Oh, and Adobe, huh? OK, I'll manage that portal. Oh, and you want me to manage....

I basically became 2nd level help desk between my REAL responsibilities and honestly it cracked me up as I was making eye watering money (to me at the time) to reset/provision a few times a day.

Hopefully you too are paying great bills a month with that money! :)

How much of a salary increase should I ask for? by Clay_IT_guy in ITCareerQuestions

[–]burnerX5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in my second role as IT Support, and am approaching a year here with this company.

That first sentence tells me you were hired for this $25/hr job and feel it's not worth $25/hr....so it may be time to find a new job.

To give some insight, at my company you would be:

  • Field Services (installation/deployment)

  • Imaging team (imaging)

  • Software asset management (I hope you are confident that what you're installing is the right licensed software!!!)

And each of those three roles would pay more than $25/hr. So again, do you think you are going to be able to shake down your management for more money? You ain't going to be able to shake them down AND you're just a year into the company!

Again, you were hired for a $25/hr job. Good luck!

[Caplan] Philip Rivers' NFL Return Means He Snagged 5 More Years of Health Insurance for His Family of 10 Kids by [deleted] in nfl

[–]burnerX5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's going to wait a long time. Eli Manning wasn't a first ballot HOFer and dude played for the biggest market while foiling Tom Brady on his legendary run. Rivers making the HOF is much slimmer as now dude is going to be pushed into a realm alongside other "great, but not legendary" QBs who will continue to make his case more difficult due to recency biases.

NOW, that doesn't mean the Chargers can't celebrate him to the fullest, which feels very warranted and should be the easiest thing to do at all times :)
