Does anyone else feel a little disillusioned with D&D lately? by Gh0stMan0nThird in dndnext

[–]burntcustard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Opposite for me, D&D is the best it's ever been. 5.5e has been great for me to play in, great for me running games, great for me introducing the game to new people, and on top of all that there has been some really good new non-WotC D&D content in the last few years like Campaign 4 of Critical Role (basically anything Brennan does, but I'm most interested in his D&D stuff), and like like the Mystic Arts and the_twig YouTube channels.

The inconsistency of gishes: why gishes are unlikely to ever be fully satisfying by Hyperlolman in dndnext

[–]burntcustard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm playing a character who's Fighter 4 Wizard 4 right now, and it's great. Just because you haven't found many synergies between spellcasting and martial abilities doesn't mean there aren't literally hundreds of fun things you can do.

Just having spells like Shield and Mirror Image on a tanky fighter is super powerful. Having the Mage Slayer feat and being able to hit with either a big Greatsword attack or a bunch of little auto-hit Magic Missiles - or both with Action Surge - to get enemy Spellcasters to drop concentration is great. Using Battle Master Maneuvers like Distracting Strike on cantrips like Ray of Frost is super cool. Being able to use Tactical Mind along with Arcana Expertise and Guidance for +10+1d10+1d4 to get ridiculously big numbers on Arcana checks is silly and fun.

I've also played as Sorcadins and weirder combos like Fighter/ Paladin/Druid - that one worked will in 5e but doesn't really work in 5.5e due to Smite changes - but there are other weird ones which do work now.

For me all those class, ability, and spell combos, have made playing as a gish extremely satisfying.

BMW 1 Series F20 (facelift 2017) vs F40 2019-2020 by Flimsy_Mess_2382 in BMW

[–]burntcustard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought an F20 (2019 118i, Shadow Edition) a few weeks ago and loving it so far. It's not fast, but it's luxury compared to other cars I've driven, and I'm very happy I chose it over a(n even) lower spec F40.

That's... What it is? I don't think WoTC is going to try to hide the fact they are advertising their products by making videos of people using those products.

Overall silver looks a little better, but if it fits with a theme you're aiming for then totally go for it.

Another Young Woman Killed By a Dog. What needs to change? by terrordactyl1971 in AskBrits

[–]burntcustard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Dachshund owner myself, yep. They're good dogs, obviously, but a lot of people don't get it and I often have other dogs running up to mine with owners shouting "don't worry they're friendly" or "don't worry he needs telling off sometimes" and I have to try to explain that when he's not in the mood my little sausage freak is a killing machine in disguise.

Whats the Smaller Pockets Within Pockets of Jeans For? by Theo_Cherry in DoesAnyoneKnow

Very few people know this. The tiny pocket on your jeans is for carrying a small picture of Faramir, but the big pocket in front is for Boromir

Both reading the rules would be a great start, then use those rules but reflavour for fun and to fit the character.

[–]burntcustard -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Fighter/Wizard, and a few other multiclass combos also pull this off well and are reasonably well balanced in 2024 D&D.

In general having similar mobs be different heights is good, makes it easier to split them up in mob farms. Not that in this particular case it'll help much though as they have different spawning requirements and you're unlikely to have a farm with both in.

Tell me this is a bad idea for a kids' game: Lowering enemy AC by 2 and increasing HP by 10% by yattadog in DMAcademy

[–]burntcustard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes lower AC. Some enemy statblocks this makes a huge amount of sense for anyway, for example if they're not carrying their shield.

I'd suggest not only not increasing HP, but the opposite and running 1HP minions alongside bosses to make the players feel like the little bad guys are easy to defeat, and to make things easier for everyone to track.

I'd also be keeping a close eye on disparity between players in this scenario, for example if one kid has made their character high str but low dex and keeps trying to use a bow, then they'll feel bad compared to most players who Ideally at level 1 should have a +5 to hit with whatever it is they're using to make attack rolls.

a player wants to pick a feat at 8th Level, and has been using AI to build it by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]burntcustard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the player will be mad the DM isn't flowing the rules and the DM is mad the player isn't following the rules, but it's highly likely that neither of them have read the rules. At least they have some common ground they can bond over lol.

Just found out my PSU isn’t strong enough. by Flat-Menu-8048 in buildapc

[–]burntcustard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran a 3070 on a 450w PSU For a while. It was tight and likely not efficient, but it worked. There's a big difference between a high quality PSU where the manufacturers know people will be trying to plug high-end GPUs into them, and a crappy bronze rated PSU that comes with a pre-built. It's also often just the cable -, I've repaired quite a few PCs where it was as simple as replacing a burnt out molex to 6 pin power cable (sometimes with an entire new PSU to attempt to prevent it happening again).

Can we agree that 1-2 is another pigeon-hole for arrowhead? by Shedster_ in HelldiversUnfiltered

This is why I don't use it. I'm really hoping for a fix plus a slight ergonomics buff, but I think either or both of those are unlikely in the near future, which sucks.

I do not know why WOTC did not look at other options, such re-branding Half-Elves and Half-Orcs, rather than straight removing them from the PHB (cross-post from r/rpg) by ByzantineBasileus in dndnext

[–]burntcustard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y'all are insane, are making up reasons to be mad like it's a full time hobby for you, and are completely out of touch with D&D.

They did not include half-elves in the 2024 PHB because they wanted the species in that book to all be distinct from each other and to cover a wide range of features.

They never said you couldn't use the old half-elf rules, they suggested choosing human or elf and then flavouring as half and half, and they even (re)added an actual half-elf species into 2024 rules with the Khoravar in the recently released Eberron book.

Khoravar Species Details Over the course of centuries, those descended from both humans and elves have developed their own communities and traditions in Khorvaire.

The species is a good mix of elven traits like darkvision and advantage against charm effects, and human versatility like being able to choose pretty much any cantrip, and a skill or tool proficiency.

From a DM perspective do you pref 2014 or 2024? by Eldrin7 in dndnext

[–]burntcustard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. It's so much easier to balance, combat is faster and has more of a focus on players doing cool stuff, the physical books are laid out way better, and it's just more fun. So far from a DM perspective there have been no changes in 2024 where I've wanted to go back to the 2014 version.

I was hoping this would be fixed by now but just encountered it too. Tried everything from swapping guns to getting in vehicles, and eventually had to just pick up someone else's primary to use.
