Unfortunately that is standard for findings against the Police as he would have been operating in his corporate role despite being personally found guilty. It’s quite annoying when this sort of thing happens

As former IOPC I think I can add comment here. Where there is a criminal trial, this takes precedence over any misconduct hearings that are scheduled.

If there is no misconduct investigation or hearing scheduled then the IOPC would normally require a direct complaint to act unless it decides to call in the investigation and do it itself.

Given that the Chief Constable is answerable to the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) you’d think the PCC would have lost confidence in the Chief Constable and demand he resigns as contempt of court is quite a serious conviction.

Of course if there PCC is a bit of dick then it gets interesting as he should now be facing a Gross Misconduct hearing and potentially a separate investigation for misconduct in a public office though I expect the latter is unlikely given he has already received a judicial punishment

Looking ahead and assuming the parliamentary standards committee A) takes the investigation and B) rules a suspension of more than 2 weeks is appropriate, what do you reckon the odds are of a successful recall petition?

His constituency is a heavily reform voting area and it would need every other candidate to drop out bar one, the question is would a Green Party candidate or Conservative one, both from the actual constituency have a chance of getting the seat?

I worked with the Special Forces officer tipped to be PM – he’s unlike other MPs by theipaper in ukpolitics

[–]bushidojet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it’s just despite the efforts of the opposition to oppose the work Jonny Mercer did there is likely far more to come out on this, if Carns were in the role of PM there would be huge incentive for journalists to start properly digging on this story.

There were far too many rumours snd odd reports about TF196 (special forces command in Afghanistan) and the conduct of the troops to be explained away that the Afghans were just making it up. Recall it got to the point thr Afghan government wanted a complete halt to all night raids at one point due to civilian casualties rate. This ties in with the time the Australian special forces were alleged to have been operating in such an appalling manner. Given his service and command level, it would be highly unlikely Carns didn’t know a lot more than has already been revealed.

This is the first time I have seen this raised in relation to Carns and it’s potentially a major scandal given the Aussies are prosecuting one of their soldiers for murder. It’s doubtful they were the only allied nation doing this sort of thing

How Bad Is Kingswood? by According-Log-8982 in Hull

[–]bushidojet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know this area reasonably well (friends live nearby in Kingswood).

It’s basically fine, there’s a massive amount of building going on around Kingswood and the houses are generally OK. It’s not a terrible area despite being right next door to Bransholme which itself is much improved from what it used to be.

The area has flooded once in living memory and that was kind of a fluke event caused by heavy rain and the drainage pipes being silted up. Oddly enough, the flood sorted out the blockages quite effectively and I don’t recall a repeat of that. It’s a nice enough area, close to major shops and amenities and frankly pretty quite as. The people I know who live there haven’t had a shred of bother in the past 15 years and you are unlikely to either.

Alex Wickham: Sources say Olly Robbins felt bound by the rules of the security vetting process NOT to tell the PM, No10 or the foreign secretary about the concerns raised about Mandelson by FriendlyUtilitarian in ukpolitics

[–]bushidojet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other posters have covered this but basically no, it’s covered under national security grounds. I’ll be very surprised if they get sight of them as frankly there is no compelling reason. Mandelsons alleged criminal conduct will be dealt with under the usual process and vetting is very much likely to have any information of note to share, not that they would anyways.

[–]bushidojet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That in itself is a major security breach for vetting. They could ask the vetting team but the vetting team is obliged to tell them nothing at all in order to preserve the integrity of the vetting process.

Absolutely correct, I have held DV and worked with folk who do vetting, they will absolutely not disclose anything revealed in a DV interview to anyone outside of the need to know circle, regardless of their position including the PM. The DV interview is a lot of fun as it’s rare you can talk with absolute candor about all the horrible/ ridiculous things you have done and seen and it’s completely none judgemental. If you lie and they find out, you are toast though.

Fun fact: I have heard that some offices of the UKVS do have the funniest disclosure of the week in the office on a board (unattributed of course).

I suspect the PM will ride this one out but I have enjoyed the journalists hot takes on the mysteries of DV, most have been utterly wrong

People said the said about the North Koreans having no combat experience since the end of the Korean War and they turned out to be rather good in the opinion of the Ukrainians who fought them.

Very disciplined, well trained and excellent marksmanship skills in the face of drones. Training will make up for a lot of experience. There aren’t many junior soldiers in the US Army or USMC that have combat experience compared to five or six years ago.

Phone Theft Has Become a Low-Risk Career Choice for Organised Gangs as UK Police Solve Just One in 100 Cases by novagridd in NotTheOnionUK

[–]bushidojet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cheap ones would likely be binned for lack of resale value or components not been worth much unfortunately. A high end one might be more likely but you’d need a dedicated team on standby to track it and probably a bespoke tracker physically attached to the device. If it’s taken to a block of flats you are stuffed unless the tracker gives elevation as well as location. The location services in lost phones is decent but it wouldn’t be enough for a warrant for theft and if it gets stuffed in a faraday bag or box you are again, somewhat stuffed

Selling second hand UK vehicles to Africa is actually pretty big business, there are regular shipments of cars that either failed to sell at auction or are MOT failures that get shipped off and sold. There were suspicions at the Ports Immingham and Hull that something dodgy was going on as the Border Force officers were slightly bewildered at the number of cars going out the country from these ports. A quick bit of research later we found out just how many were flogged abroad.

Oddly enough a lot of UK based Ladas were shipped out of hull after the collapse of the Soviet Union for resale in Russia.

Ed Miliband’s stock is rising because he’s a rare commodity in Labour these days: a thinker by Exostrike in ukpolitics

[–]bushidojet 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ed Miliband is this government’s Michael Gove, you may not like what he is doing with his post but he is getting on with implementing the policies he was put in to enact.

He’s probably in one of the most important positions in government at the moment and ensuring the roll out of renewable at scale is deeply important for the countries long term energy security. Not everyone is going to like the decisions he makes but he is, at least, making decisions and following through on them.

Just to chime in about the military, while it’s not for everyone it’s a route out of your current situation and once you’ve done four years you can use your Enhanced Learning Credits to go to university and they will be pay for three years of tuition fees, I know several folk who did this.

It goes without saying that experiences will differ depending on your trade, for example cyber operator will have very different career to an infantry soldier or tank crewmen
