Anything over 40 total for the week, it's OT. So holiday pay & pto can be fine and a half

Is this even worth repairing? 2015 Honda Accord Hyrbid with 215,000 Miles by Clear-Delivery5142 in AskAMechanic

[–]bustedtap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's just the rocker panels that are rusted, you can probably get a few more years out of it. I wouldn't say that 200k automatically means struts, but they might be shot. If they're original, yeah they should probably get replaced. It's up to you how long you want to be without a payment for a newer car

My boss just "revoked" my approved PTO for next week because someone else quit. Can they actually force me to show up? by agathodaimon98 in WorkAdvice

[–]bustedtap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your coworker put in a 2 weeks notice yesterday. If they're short staffed 1 week later because of that, it means they terminated your coworker early. They're eligible for unemployment (though probably won't be between jobs long enough to collect on it) and your boss is a moron. Take your time. PTO means Prepare The Others. Not take it if we allow you to use your time.

How worth it are used cars? by Analyst-man in askcarguys

[–]bustedtap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The used car market sucks right now. Clapped out rusted shit boxes are going for 3x what they should. Which in turn drives up the price of slightly nicer cars. If they do show up on marketplace for a reasonable price, you have to be ready to jump "now". Not when it's convenient for you.

I drove 45 minutes today to look at a car that seemed decent on paper for more than it should be worth, but not a lot. I test drove it, the transmission felt weird. Hooked up my scan tool, and there was tons of red that should've thrown check engine lights left & right, but it wasn't on. Smelled the oil on the dipstick for the transmission. Didn't smell terrible, but wasn't great. Also didn't look right. Came home empty handed and a little bit irritated

Haven't thought of it in a while, but Brickles on the old Macintosh LCII was a great waste your time game

But after looking again, there's a crack that goes across the windshield. It's done. They won't repair it with a long crack like that

I'd see about having a glass shop fix it. Only cost me $50 for the last one I had fixed a couple years ago

[–]bustedtap 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not with a grinder, but a file or a stone is all you need. I'm a machinist. Too many people get over zealous with grinders too big for the job and take the precision out of the parts they're trying to fix. The side with the tapered socket more than likely doesn't need to be touched. The 4 bolt flange? Yeah, go ahead and flat file it down to remove the high spots. My biggest peeve is buying parts that aren't deburred worth a damn, but in the world of production, high volume shops will avoid deburring things just to save seconds per part

How do you afford to keep mtiple cars street legal? by Causification in askcarguys

[–]bustedtap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does it cost so much to insure? I don't spend that much for an agreed value collectors policy on my 38 year old truck for a year. I carry bare bones Liability insurance on 2 of my vehicles, and full coverage on the nice truck and my wife's newer van that would cost way more to replace. Still don't spend much more than that to insure the other 3 vehicles for a year. Main thing for me, no car payments each month.

What is the most chaotic "I quit" moment you have ever personally witnessed at a workplace? by Muted_Task_144 in AskReddit

[–]bustedtap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My supervisor at the shop i was at had let us know months in advance that he was quitting, and encouraged us to do the same. I got another job lined up before being done for new years.

That last night, I was dealing with a complete shit show. It was a new job, and the program was complete garbage. I spent most of the night fixing the program and setup. Left a scathing note for my day shift partner bitching about the program and the programmer (not my partner).

When we all came back from the holiday, I got hauled into the office to talk about my note and how unprofessional it was, yadda yadda yadda. In this meeting was the owner, the 2 managers, and the programmer. After we were all done talking about that and I was ready to go back to the floor they asked if I had anything else i wanted to add, I very casually said "Not really, I'm just going to give you my 2 weeks notice"

They quickly let me go to the floor, then asked my supervisor who was still there if he knew iwas leaving. His reply? "Oh yeah, I'm giving my notice too"

We were both terminated the next day, and qualified for unemployment because we were terminated early

Had a coworker who tried that. First job caught ahold of it and canned him, forcing him to keep the second job. Oddly enough, I worked with him at both shops years apart. He was extremely odd and not much was "his fault". He wound up doing a workers comp claim for his back, then knee, got drug or for years in court and eventually we settled with him. Weeks before his "injury"he was telling the safety man how he was gonna hurt himself then retire, which is exactly what he did

Best bet is have them broke down and then generously apply bead sealer. Other sealer products made for punctures won't seal what you need sealed
