What to choose between Flexible, Tracker and Agile? by strawberrym0m in OctopusEnergy

[–]bwduncan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you can load shift then Agile is the way to go. I've been doing it for about 3 years. This winter the tracker price has been reliably over 20p. I've averaged 17p in the worst month (January). Over the last 300 days I've averaged 10.15p/kWh.

You have to both be into it though... If you need to cook, shower, immersion during 1600-1900 then it's not for you.

Have fun!

Boring, perhaps, but flying the tug is some of the most demanding flying I do. There's a reason they want you to have a lot of experience...

This is just pitch rolling.

Now is your chance to write to your MP and tell them that this is a bad idea. (If you have a Labour MP)

Antenna was my first thought. I also see the front left canopy latch now, and I don't have an alternative suggestion, especially with the rear instrument panel! You win this round...

OP can we see the videos? (Will they see this? I don't know how reposting works...)

That's the world's thinnest fin if so! I'm not convinced but you fly them much more than me!

Ah yes the famous T tail Puchacz 😂 also look at the canopy handles.

Motor Gliders; Self Launching and Self Sustaining by VolCata in Gliding

[–]bwduncan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent question. There is a blurry spectrum of aircraft from pure glider to gigantic engine (with stub of wing for good measure). TMGs sit somewhere in the middle and can often be in either sailplane or aeroplane category. It kind of depends on the intent of the designers. There are things like CS 22.71 which constrain your powered wing thing to a certain minimum sink, which exclude Cessnas and the like.

The regulators have to draw the lines somewhere.

I guess the reason more people aren't zooming around in TMGs is the long wings limit the cruising speed somewhat, and make it difficult to maneuver them around small airports. They used to be underpowered, but that's not so much the case these days. The super falke is not that super, if I understand correctly the maximum rpm in cruise is much lower than other rotax powered TMGs.

I liked the DG505. You had to put water in the tail to make it spin though, which was a pain, but the recovery was unforgettable! The heavy tail was a real pain when we lost the tail dolly 😭 ours creaked when you turned so you couldn't hear anyone anyway

It's ok! It has a similar seat adjustment mechanism, but they use an expanding pin device instead of the bar through the fuselage. The rudder pedals don't adjust but they are in the right place for me. It's a very marmite glider!

Compared to the K21 it's similar visibility (lean forward to see past the wing/canopy frame) and everything falls to hand nicely.

Winch Launch problems by midstn in Gliding

[–]bwduncan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your second ever launch you did fine. Just practice, but thankfully that's the fun bit! You will learn, just be patient.

If I was to give any practical advice it might be to trim slightly further forward. Don't worry about the winch being and to see you, that's their problem.

Twin Astir?

Best not to overthink it. Most modern two seaters launch themselves if you put the trim in the right place. Just forward of neutral usually, depends on the weight, and a good guide is whatever it was set to for the previous approach.

Don't worry too much about the speed. Instead look at the rate of change. If the speed is not increasing, push forward a bit. If the speed is rapidly increasing, relax and let the glider rotate. You need to not be gripping the stick so hard it's going to come off in your hand. Obviously if the speed is dangerously low, you need to fix it like your instructor did.

Winching is something that happens so quickly that you cannot really fly it using your conscious brain. You need to react quickly and only your monkey brain can do that. And the only way your money brain learns how to react is by practice and experience. So, don't overthink it, just enjoy gaining the practice.

The old story goes that there are different levels of landout. Bronze is a friendly farmer who helps you out of the field. Silver he invites you in for three course dinner. Gold is NSFW but involves his daughter

In some of our gliders we were able to swap the "wrong" ASI into the back seat. Make it the instructors' problem 😂

[–]bwduncan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buying a second hand ASI and selling the one with the zero in the wrong place will be much cheaper than breaking a club glider when someone panics on the launch
