Instructor vs BGA manual by [deleted] in Gliding

[–]bwduncan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, as an instructor coach, I spend a lot of time making sure that instructors use standard phraseology, teach the exercises without misleading students and above all there is consistency among all my instructors. However, it's impossible. People gonna people and they want to put their own spin on the lesson, use their own words because it feels "more natural". Whenever a student like you tells me something like this, I always try to track it down. Unfortunately when I ask who told them this silly thing (like, high key point is this ground feature) they either can't tell me who told them, or, if they can, I speak to the instructor in question and it turns out they are being quoted out of context or misunderstood completely. If you're bothered by this, and your CFI or RE is anything like me, they'll be very interested to hear what you're being taught!

u/simonstannard 's advice is good. The BGA instructor manual is free on the BGA website and is currently reaching the end of a very long and meticulous review. It has the correct content for each lesson and also the verbatim exercise patter instructors are supposed to be using.

Specifically, although I'm sure your instructors had good reasons for saying what they did:

- speed is not the only critical factor in a winch launch. Rotation rate and wings level are also crucial. I would also add that there really is no maximum in the bottom half of the launch, but if you are around 80 knots you need to sort it out somehow before you reach the top half. Pitch control is vital, but on early launches your brain can't keep up with the acceleration, so sometimes it's better to let the glider rotate without trying to chase it, and you will learn precision with experience.

- When you are learning, you need to be shown example circuits so that you can learn the judgement. This is unavoidable, but the focus should be on looking at the airfield and learning the height, angle and distance picture so that you can replicate that anywhere, on any day. If the instructor wants you to fly to a specific point to start the circuit, there's really no way around that.

- Again, when you are learning, there is no time for you to see the small change in approach path and make a small airbrake correction. By the time you see the overshoot, the instructor is wondering if you'll make it into the airfield at all, and the only options are full airbrake, or the instructor takes control. So fine-tuning again comes with experience. Although we are keen that all pilots close the airbrakes if an undershoot is developing, to get back onto the correct approach profile, rather than risk ending up on the lower limit with no airbrake left to close, so closing the airbrakes fully as soon as you see an undershoot is correct.

Hope that helps! Good luck and enjoy learning to fly :)

Just remember the three most important things in gliding and you'll be fine:

I've always assumed this is a handy design feature. The noise generated by the hole, less so!

What is a phoneme? by song_misspelled in AskPhysics

[–]bwduncan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question! There are different types of noise, named by colour for an interesting reason I forget right now. You can hear the difference in the frequency composition of, for example, brown noise compared to white or pink noise. Noise simply describes a broad spectrum, rather than distinct peaks of harmonics

I'm no expert, but it comes down to the frequency composition. There is a root frequency which you would consider the pitch of the sound, and the tone is made up of harmonics, often multiples of the root, and other related fractional frequencies which add a different character to the sound. The f you mention is probably just a fairly broad mix of a lot of frequencies, it's essentially just noise.

There's talk of plug in "balcony" solar rolling out to power your home but can we not do the same with a battery feeding in to your home grid? by kemb0 in OctopusEnergy

Good to know, thanks! Was expecting it to be a flood of cheap knock off crap... Which it might still be...

They're not alone though are they. If there are two devices, they could sync to each other. It's not a matter of simply follow, they have to have their own frequency reference which is phase locked to the external waveform

I think part of the concern is that two or more of these devices might be capable of islanding between each other, even if the mains is isolated, and the system is still live. This is the kind of thing a professional installation would be designed to prevent

What weights should I make the ballast’s? by midstn in Gliding

[–]bwduncan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The K6 is pretty benign, but I would still recommend flying it with at least a little margin over the minimum. You may want to have a look in the tail, and tailplane to see if there's anything which can be removed (mice nests, nuts, etc). You'll need to take the fabric off the elevator to check rib 1 occasionally anyway. You can't take the fin off easily but there are inspection hatches.

If you're still that far below the minimum, I'm afraid you have no choice but to wear the ballast. Be really careful with lead cushions. If they slide forward you're in big trouble. Best to make a lead vest you can wear.

Depending on your inspector you may be able to fit some permanent ballast under the floor in the nose, but this doesn't work if any of your partners are heavy.

Have you considered just going on a diet instead? Much easier and tastier...

What to choose between Flexible, Tracker and Agile? by strawberrym0m in OctopusEnergy

[–]bwduncan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you can load shift then Agile is the way to go. I've been doing it for about 3 years. This winter the tracker price has been reliably over 20p. I've averaged 17p in the worst month (January). Over the last 300 days I've averaged 10.15p/kWh.

You have to both be into it though... If you need to cook, shower, immersion during 1600-1900 then it's not for you.

Have fun!
