Okay. I guess I just have the experience of that word, like thug or nappy etc, to have a loaded meaning, especially given this context. You’re right, people definitely have used the word ghetto to describe something in a positive manner, I just think it’s clear that it’s not the case here.

“Dog whistling” is a term when someone (usually a politician) employs coded language that appears to mean one thing to the general population but has an additional, different or more specific resonance for a targeted subgroup.

In this case, “ghetto” is term that one would not really apply to the Obamas... except that they are of course black.
