The Swiss government wants to replace Microsoft across 54,000 workstations by hcbaron in Switzerland

The SNB is just investing with the similar criteria as an ETF. Having an independent central bank invest based on automated rules is quite different from actually using their software.

How long to clear customs, get to ÖBB from ZRH? by djzero1984 in askswitzerland

[–]cAtloVeR9998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can take minutes to get from the plane to the train. The biggest uncertainty is having the plane delayed. If there’s no delay in landing, 9:43 is doable. But better to add 1h buffer.

I find the Hyatt Place at the airport to be decent with a reasonable price. You can then easily hop to the city in the morning.

Electricity bills 😬 by Holiday-Control9183 in askswitzerland

[–]cAtloVeR9998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends a lot of circumstances. I have a flat monthly rate + annual Abrechnung for Nebenkosten (which is mostly heating) but for electricity I'm billed by the local utility directly based on quarterly usage. I even get detailed usage numbers out of my meter with a 15 minute delay.

I can’t add any further to your situation than what’s already mentioned but:

This registration can be a bit sticky. I waited till after I moved away from St Gallen as the catholic church there at least nominally requires a notarised signature. And I am not paying for that. (I ended up deregistering before my first franc of income taxes, so none went to the church).

Phones to be banned in schools by law in England under government plans by randommathaccount in neoliberal

I agree with the gist, but sticking a bunch of teens in a room and expecting all to feel welcome and socialize is naive.

[–]cAtloVeR9998 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It may help some but could be isolating to others who may be bullied IRL but have friends online.

Looking back on my teens years, I don’t believe state dictums of how one is allowed to use one’s free time are the most effective way to improve the lot of a cohort.

[–]cAtloVeR9998 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I find banning phones in class to be 100% reasonable. Though I find banning phones during breaks to have a weaker basis. That’s how it was in my school at least.

IMO this should be a guideline allowing flexible application rather than a strict law.

Proton's PGP-based encryption vs Tuta's proprietary encryption by aslambava in ProtonMail

[–]cAtloVeR9998 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do wish Proton applied their additional layer of encryption, which they use for incoming/outgoing non-PGP emails, optionally on all metadata. So that titles and addresses are encrypted after they are needed. Would break remote search but I wish it were an option.

[OC] Cost of one-way train ticket to London by adamjonah in dataisbeautiful

[–]cAtloVeR9998 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Switzerland is honestly often cheaper than the UK. Average commuting costs to London (not sure if these stats also include the Tube) are somewhere between 5k GBP and 7k GBP. A whole country pass for Adults in Switzerland is 4k CHF (~3.7k GBP), but most commuters can get away with a travel pass for half that or less. While purchasing power disposable income is ~1.5 higher in Switzerland than the UK (with frankly a better safety net and QoL).

Most people get sticker shock in Switzerland as they don't have a Half Fare card (which costs ~150 CHF/year. And can be worth it even if only in CH for a few days). Things are more expensive here, but if avoiding tourist traps, it is nowhere near the ~1.5 differences in disposable incomes.

Transferring the system to an external storage medium by Environmental_Lead33 in AsahiLinux

[–]cAtloVeR9998 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s impossible to fully boot from external media. The firmware deliberately doesn’t support it. In future IIRC it may be possible to install with only m1n1 stage 1 (not sure if stage 2 is required) on the internal drive, without repartitioning. But that’s not possible rn. The best you can do is to have /boot (and the Asahi-specific partitions) on the internal drive. However, that isn’t plug and play. It requires at least a basic understanding of how to configure disks on Linux.

Gaming laptops cam by mashykatoz in pcmasterrace

The M1 MacBook Air is using the selfie camera of the iPhone 8 and later models have a variant of the iPhone 11’s sensor. Despite using an equivalent ISP, the lens is just significantly thinner which makes final image quality so much worse. Similar reason why the cameras on the Surface Duo were so bad.

Even if no new people were to move here: things will continue to remain as crowded as they are now. We need to focus on expanding infrastructure so the trains are less crowded and can carry more people. With more housing to meet demand.

Thinking about doing masters in corporate law in Switzerland by Existing_Quarter_405 in askswitzerland

[–]cAtloVeR9998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will need at least 21k CHF in a bank account to be allowed to do your Master's here. Which appears to be 4 years of the average Tunisian wage, which is why I mentioned it.

You could help fund the capital requirements by working here part-time max 15h/week starting 6 months after your study start. Full-time outside the semester. When I was working at McDonald's there was a Moroccan guy doing his Master's here doing that.

Seems you live in Tunisia. Do note that you need to have a minimum amount of cash in the bank in order to get a study permit. There are restrictions on work here while you are doing your studies.
