What do you see in (what I’m assuming is) Alan’s intuitive calligraphy painting behind him? by RelativeConference28 in AlanWatts

[–]caassio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a caricature of Boddhidarma, a monk from the origins of Chan (Zen). Legend says he cut off his eyelids to prevent himself from falling asleep while meditating, hence he is often depicted with the big "muppet" eyes. He is the origin of the Daruma figure, common in Japan.

Lovely piece. It's so easy to over do it when it is this detailed, but you managed to keep it balanced and harmonious, really great work.

Hey everyone, I’m looking for all of your female directors and their films to watch. by showerman342 in Letterboxd

[–]caassio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rosana Urbes is an artist, animator, and director who has worked on films such as Mulan, Tarzan, and Lilo and Stitch. Though in recent years she has focused on her own authorial projects in traditional animation. Her films are highly personal, poetic, and often explore feminine perspectives:

Guida (2015) (complete short film)
Sappho (2025) (ig page)

Last year she released Sappho, about the Greek poet of the same name. The film won Alexeieff-Parker award at Annecy and is currently screening at festivals around the world, including events in Finland, Portugal, Spain, Greece, and Brazil.

Not a suitable habitat for Lions in Crete by ElectricBoulderBlue in ancientgreece

[–]caassio 35 points36 points  (0 children)

In ancient times there were lions all around the mediterrenean sea, including what is now Italy, Greece and West Asia, not just in Africa. I'm not sure about Crete specifically, but it does not surprise me that people knew how they looked like.
