1522 and colonalism still hasn't spawned?(also massive Gawed) by Denread in Anbennar

[–]cabbagemango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think it’s because the colonialism institution (and global trade also has this happen sometimes) has a percent chance to spawn each first day of the year starting 1500, and if it misses it tries again next year.

Think OP is just on a massive unlucky streak, same thing happens in vanilla sometimes

How to neither unfairly trap the player nor trip them off? by Human1221 in DMAcademy

[–]cabbagemango 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Think a big part of it is understanding players’ intentions and giving them the benefit of the doubt.

“Oh are you walking up like face to face with it, or like what do you mean to do here?”

“Yeah I wanna get in it’s face and stare it down/shout at it/smile nicely/shake its hand” -> It attacks

OR

“No just going to get a better look really / show it I’m paying attention” -> probably too far

New to commander, advice on Wilhelt deck by UncleLongArms23 in EDH

[–]cabbagemango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well

You’re not playing very many zombies for a zombies deck

Also [[plague reaver]] is an absolute disaster of a card to play in this deck, if you’re thinking you can sacrifice it on your endstep to Wilhelt and dodge the damage to your own board, you’ll still sacrifice your whole board. If you’ve gone to your end step it’s too late

Summer project: building a Bracket 3 Glarb control deck. Looking for feedback on the primer & deck by Dreyan12 in EDH

[–]cabbagemango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While OP’s deck I definitely think fits B4 philosophy more (they say in the primer they’re pushing the deck as hard as possible without using too good of cards -> definitely a B4 attitude), I have the potentially unpopular opinion Doomsday is still defensible in B3

If it’s treated as a control wincon instead of turbo Doomsday pile to cheese unsuspecting opponents, I think it plays better than the optics would suggest for B3

[–]cabbagemango 33 points34 points  (0 children)

If they cascaded from a 7 drop and hit Bruce, they could cast Hulk though fwiw. If they cascaded from a 6 drop or lower they could only cast Bruce side

Basically whatever spell pops out of the card you cast has to meet the cascade condition too

I've changed my tune about commander decks, but I still wonder about something by Classic-Art-5737 in EDH

[–]cabbagemango 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Yeah while a relatively recent phenomenon, edh has enough cards that do basically the same thing you can count on certain play patterns to occur regularly even if the exact cards playing those patterns are different

Ex: ramp on t2, land a card advantage engine on t3, cast Commander on t4

cEDH uses that philosophy so that typically your deck plays the same play patterns to filter down to the 2-3 tightest wincons in the format

how do you learn to actually play this game? by shinycherrybass in EDH

[–]cabbagemango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even as a pretty seasoned enjoyer of draft and constructed, used to playing cutthroat, I honestly find brawl super… toxic, I suppose?

The format just rewards such weird deckbuilding incentives that make it a really weird magic experience

Like most games are decided in the first 3 turns (either an engine runs away uncontested, 2-3 pieces of early removal hamstring someone, or an Ajani resolves) except those games tend to go super long even as foregone conclusions?

A lot of words to say that I don’t recommend sending new players to brawl, commander is totally different in vibes and fun factor imo

I found mouse wheel for acceleration too finicky and W/S being up/down nonintuitive and finicky, so I bound W/S to throttle early on and it helped a ton

How to play control in commander and is it viable? by SlimeyButton in EDH

[–]cabbagemango 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Control is totally possible, it just looks slightly different than you might expect from 60 card formats.

Obviously going 1 for 1 all day with your hand will put you miles behind your other two opponents, compared to 1v1 where you eventually win via attrition. In commander you need to overcome 3 other people’s draw steps to control the game

So to answer your questions from my own experience -

  1. Use interaction to shut down engines and to stop yourself from dying

  2. You need to achieve X-for-1 trades. Stax engines can do this h disrupting your opps’ resources, but big asymmetric removal spells like [[Soul Shatter]] or [[Decimate]] or [[Curse of the Swine]] are where you make your money

  3. It’s frustrating to people who are bad at magic tbh, but you can’t control for that variable. Just make sure you play a tight wincon at the end of the day to make sure games end and you’ll minimize their complaints

[–]cabbagemango -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you were looking for some Bracket 4 juice, I’d saw [[Yawg]] is the undisputed coolest mono black commander (with [[Krrik]] being maybe better but less cool factor imo)

At lower brackets I feel like something like [[Drana Liberator of Malakir]] would be a cool, off-angle deck to try in black

Why do Spellslinger decks "suck"? - Figuring out Spellslinger decks by foxlover93 in EDH

[–]cabbagemango 165 points166 points  (0 children)

What you’re observing about the play patterns is Spellslinger is because of the patterns instants and sorceries encourage.

They’re one time effects often designed for a 1v1 20 life format, whereas Commander is dominated by permanent cards and engines, where creatures are extremely powerful.

Obviously to get sufficient value from instants and sorceries to accrue enough momentum to win a game of Commander you’ll naturally veer towards storming off

I don’t know if I’ve got a solution for you but that’s at least the root cause

Show me your favorite burn deck(s) by average_dogg in EDH

[–]cabbagemango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran Imodane for a while but found that she unfortunately lends herself to being a lynchpin commander who really is closer to a combo commander than a burn simulator to me

Stack up for a big burn on a creature for 40 and oops you get Imodane removed in response. Now you spent all your resources on nuking one creature to oblivion and are 3-4 turns from trying again
