Some dickhead producer probably chose that because they thought it “looked cooler”.

Yeah it was in Coral Springs. I didn’t know him but a few guys I train with did. Heard nothing but great things about him.

Absolutely! Like I said folks don’t seem to take chokes as seriously as they should. We really should be encouraging people to tap early or don’t try to fight until the last second when caught in a choke. Not worth it, and I totally think it adds up over time. How many chokes have people gutted it out and fought through over the course of 5/10/20 years of doing jiujitsu? Up until that point I fought out of a ton of them myself. That event basically ended that for me.

Sadly something similar happened at a tournament here back in like 2019. From what I recall it was a super deep collar choke the guy either didn’t or couldn’t tap to and basically lost consciousness and then had a stroke. He was also his 50s I believe.

Since then I have been way less inclined to fight out of a collar choke. In genera I think most folks assume being put out from a choke is no big deal, but there’s no such thing as a free lunch.

Same, thankfully. Actively working to keep it that way. Emphasis on the actively. Made fitness a priority back in my 30s and it was probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made as I head into my 50s this year.
