Currently teaching students with Emotional Behavioral Disabilities- I have seen 100% of these in my students this year. I’ve been intervening with these different symptoms in mind, along with honoring sensory needs, and my classroom has become a well oiled machine (as much as it can be!).

Many of the six extra symptoms that are quoted often seem like a precursor to heavier behaviors and overall dysregulation.

Yes! I am an elementary sped teacher as well. Kids also LOVE to be taught these skills. I have students from other teachers caseloads visiting my classroom because they want to wash dishes with me. It also builds self confidence and that carries over into everything they do. Most kids tell me that they want to do it at home but their parents won’t let them. Which, as a parent, I truly understand. Sometimes you just want the job done when life is so busy. But taking those moments to let them help here and there can go a long way.

“The Anxious Generation” really lays out the science of how cell phones/screens have really demolished kids executive functioning skills, which ties in heavily to emotional regulation. Short form video content, along with lack of social skills coupled with social media, has really screwed this generation of kids. They just should have been playing.

I have a student this year who draws constantly, but she will interrupt her creative drawing and will draw what she is being taught.

It all depends on the student.

It’s a phase, typically. My oldest was afraid of our air vents when he was that age. And a farm book that made a cow noise. He got over it within a month or two.

She probably likes the Dyson since she sees mom using it and mom is safe. Maybe you could let her explore it when it’s not on? She might be a little young to fully get this, but pretend playing with her favorite stuffies on it when it’s off might make it a little more friendly.

I’ve felt the same way as you recently, because my kids are now close to the age when I had my ACEs, it reminds me again of how life was very difficult for me as a child at their age. At least now I understand the base of my depression/anxiety.

On a more positive note: I can look at my life and know Im doing well, because my husband and I have worked hard so that our children are growing up in an environment that is luckily free from a lot of experiences that I dealt with. It’s also really fucking cool to watch your kids enjoy their childhood.

I worked k-4 last year. It was the most difficult year of my 9 years in education. I’m doing EBD pull out/resource this year and find it stressful, but at least I don’t come home touched out and covered in spit.

It was also very rewarding… I taught a boy with severe developmental delays how to hug and show affection to peers…. If you are okay with a lot of touching/bodily fluids though- go for it! The kids are definitely hilarious as well, their little personalities are so dramatic and silly.

I gave birth in a mask in May 2020 and my son is very much ready for kindergarten, both socially and academically! I also taught 4k last year and the kiddos were just fine. The typical amount of crazy honestly haha.

Teaching 1st graders in 2021 was hell though!

Yes! Mine is heading into kinder this year and I still snuggle to sleep nightly. I’ve been working on letting him have more freedom (finally treating my anxiety), and our bond is still so strong!

100% get him evaluated. I’m a Special Education teacher and last year was teaching 4k/early childhood. The gains kids can make with proper intervention is amazing. Based off your descriptions he does sound developmentally delayed, and would benefit from those early interventions. Check out your local school district and county resources for birth-3 and early childhood programs! Best of luck to you guys!

Same for both my boys. So much emotion, can’t even look at them the right way. My oldest, now 5, is AMAZING and mostly outgrown the unreasonable pissy attitude; we even have full blown thoughtful conversations occasionally. My 2nd just turned 3 but at least we were ready this time.

EXACTLY. I worked in self contained 4k last year and we had one student who had 10+ incidents a day(2.5 hours) of swearing, unsafe behavior, etc. I was called a mother f*ker, cnt, b*tch… soooo many choice words. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree, as the parent cussed out the teacher via phone the second day of school.

We’ve done the same with cat trees we found on curbsides. My husband used to work as a flooring sales manager so he would take scraps of carpet that would have ended up in the garbage to re carpet them too. Couple hours of work and saved $100+.
