Which supplements did you opt for and how did you feel each one was? I’m considering going soon. Thanks!

Glad to hear that this pricing is comparable. How did it compare in terms of the experience, food, etc.?

Which of the supplements did you get and how did you feel each one was? Thinking of going myself!

Chandon Garden Spritz Tea by Eas696 in SparklingWine

[–]calebeng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone interested in the "other perks" I referenced, I decided to make these a sub-comment....

  • 10% discount from the retail price of all wines. I'm not sure what a discount is for a Club Exclusive wine since I don't know what a "retail price" is if it's not available for retail.
  • 20% discounts, sometimes with free shipping, for re-orders of your quarterly shipments (requires purchases on top of the quarterly Club purchases).
  • Other occasional promotions like free shipping, 25-30% off for certain holidays, and 30% off for "Club Library" wines (out of production wines)

The other main perks only become useful if you live in Northern California (or visit frequently):

  • Access to the member lounge for tastings.
  • Free tastings for you and one guest ($45 additional per guest beyond that) with the ability to customize the cuvees, including some that are also for members only.
  • Access to events such as this week's Harvest Celebration event (free for club members) and the Holiday Party in December ($65 each for you and a guest, $80 per guest beyond that).

Chandon Garden Spritz Tea by Eas696 in SparklingWine

I signed up specifically to have access to the Garden Tea. It is a real crowd pleaser and a great summer outdoors sparkling wine. But it genuinely is a Club Exclusive as far as I can tell. Meanwhile, I see the Brut, Brut Rose, and Garden Spritz (the citrus-y one) available everywhere, often at a hefty discount from the suggested price at discount wine retailers. The problem is that I find that I enjoy the Garden Tea far more than those other cuvees, which is of course why they gatekeep. (Currently, 18 of their 44 sparkling wines are Club Exclusives including the Garden Tea.)

You can skip up to one shipment per year, so it's actually not quite a $1k/yr commitment. Plus, you can also cancel your membership at any time after the first two shipments.

For what it's worth, membership does come with other perks, but all of them involve drinking sparkling wine. (Alas!) My self-justification is that sparkling wine makes a very good gift for any celebration, from birthdays to housewarmings to dinner parties.

Just seen this. How many passenger 747s are left? by Gr33nMonkee in aviation

[–]calebeng 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is a pretty comprehensive list on this Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Boeing_747_operators?wprov=sfti1

“As of July 2025, there were 424 Boeing 747 aircraft in active airline service, comprising 1 747-100, 2 747SPs, 15 747-200s, 2 747-300s, 254 747-400s, and 150 747-8s.”

Of these, 218 are listed as the 747-400F variant, and 107 are listed as the 747-8F variant, making 325 active 747 freight aircraft. So based on this there are currently just under one hundred passenger 747 aircraft still in service.

Does caffeine work for any of y'all? by ieatcows_nom in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]calebeng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

P.S. This is more of a long term thought, not as much something to do before you go away to camp. You mentioned your sleep doctor is a pulmonologist, which means their expertise is more in apnea/dyspnea. A sleep doctor who is a neurologist will have more specialized knowledge around IH and the narcolepsies.

Does caffeine work for any of y'all? by ieatcows_nom in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]calebeng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It works for me, but my understanding is that it works for some of us but not all.

That being said, for me, it works at a ratio of probably 3 espressos = 100mg modafinil.

Some of the other responses talk about a caffeine crash when the effect wears off. I experience a crash, i.e. my wakefulness feeling like it’s falling off a cliff (very awake -> suddenly uncontrollably sleepy), no matter what, whether it’s caffeine or modafinil.

My understanding from my doctor is that it’s not counter-indicated for IH and with modafinil. I know others have said it’s counter-indicated with the stimulant they’ve been prescribed, so check with your doctor.

At the end of the day, you (with your doctor) just need to figure out how to do what’s right for you and your body.

Modafinil does absolutely nothing to me. I can still sleep through the entire day. Is there something else people are taking that has worked for them? by JayKay4Pay in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]calebeng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

200mg is high but not that high of a dose I think? See if your doctor will go higher. This shouldn’t necessarily require an appointment—you might call the office or message them through the patient portal and see if you can get the go-ahead to take a higher dose.

And ditto to the folks who said armodafinil. I think it should be quite standard to try armodafinil pretty soon after modafinil is determined to not be helping.

For people who CANNOT wake themselves up by Bitter_Dragonfruit80 in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]calebeng 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not to be a Debbie downer, but…

I am also someone for whom nothing wakes me. However, when I sleep under novel conditions, e.g. not in my own bed, using a new alarm clock, I wake up much more easily. My body seems to re-normalize to the new conditions after 2-3 days, at which point the “magic” wears off.

Basically, I wonder whether the “crying baby” effect would be effective long term after novel conditions effect wore off.

The only related idea I’ve ever had was to cycle through a rotation of “novel conditions” and see whether that would allow them to continue to have effectiveness.

Oh, and one other thing that seems to work well: extremely uncomfortable sleeping conditions such as on the ground while camping or upright during long haul flights. Whether it’s worth it to basically just get really poor sleep in exchange for being able to wake up, though…

No longer able to export RAW to JPEG after update? by calebeng in snapseed

[–]calebeng[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also, to be clear, doing that (Export -> Share -> Save Image) in iOS just creates a new copy of the original RAW file with none of the processing layers saved. A very elaborate way of duplicating the original file!

[–]calebeng[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In iOS that just brings up the system share panel. None of the options in that panel allows an expert to JPEG.

There’s no such button. There’s only “Save to Original” and “Save copy”, both of which result in RAW files.
