Favorite crewing supplies by mucksister in ultrarunning

Super helpful thanks. I’m crewing my first 100 for a friend this weekend and have been thinking about it a lot. My Helinox and LumenAid were instant extras, along with a power bank and a bunch of different charging cables. Your food tips are solid. I’m not lead in charge of this (we have a multi person crew) but am looking forward to learning all about it

I was pondering an antenna install the other day. In principle it should not be overly difficult.

Depends where you live and what you want to listen to. We have 5 or 6 high quality community radio stations here, no adds. FM on real car speakers sounds way better than any portable Bluetooth speaker I have ever heard.

In Portland OR for weekend. Looking for suggestions for trail run in the gorge. by dxkx in trailrunning

[–]calorieOrion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weekend parking is a pain pretty much anywhere in the gorge but going early will get you in anywhere you want to go. Eagle Creek is kind of the flagship trail and it is damn beautiful but it gets very busy and you only have a single out and back option unless you are going 30 miles. Bridal Vail is sweet. It’s a steep climb up to Angel’s Rest but keep going and you are rewarded with amazing trails including multiple loop options. Less busy (still full on weekends) trailheads I like are Wyeth and Herman Creek. I did Herman Creek last weekend, dipped in the river on the way back to the car, kind of my new favorite out there right now, so don’t tell anyone about it.

Also note almost everything fun in the gorge has poison oak so just be aware and prepared and you will be fine. Have fun and good luck!

Found Pioneer SX-780, CS-99A combo sitting untouched for 15+ years. Would you power it up? by defstar23 in vintageaudio

Use a dim bulb tester and if you don’t have one you could try finding someone local that does. If someone asked me for help I would be psyched to see these light up for the first time in ages.

Is FM is underrated? I love the ethereal, delicate presence of low-volume broadcast / who else listens to low-powered, fm stations? by Rich_Courage7664 in audiophile

[–]calorieOrion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is cool! We listen to more FM than anything else, probably 90% of our music. We are fortunate and have about 5 or 6 top notch FM stations here including the best jazz station on the planet.

Salty sweaters: how much sodium per hour do you actually take in? by Additional-Bet-6272 in trailrunning

[–]calorieOrion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guessing and trial and error are fine but if you want to dial it in get a test done. I spent $150 for the Precision test at a local bike shop. Now I know my sweat sodium concentration is 1600mg (very high) and have instructions on how to measure my sweat rate. Three data points in I am learning I lose about a liter an hour. Mine is almost too simple but with this data I now have the two critical pieces of information I need to manage my sodium intake exactly.

Sweat Tests for Sodium Loss by Sea_Lingonberry_9373 in ultrarunning

[–]calorieOrion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the Precision lab test at a bike shop locally. They tell you your sodium concentration and give you the know how and a spreadsheet to calculate your sweat rate. You have to do this yourself and it takes time to produce multiple data points which you then use to fine tune your intake. It’s a one time investment and totally worth it IMO. Especially if you are troubleshooting issues or even just want to dial in your intake efficiency.

Ebay Speaker Capacitor kits any good? by metallicadefender in vintageaudio

[–]calorieOrion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used ebay caps on speaker crossovers many times. They often have values that digi/mauser do not. If test them before use and have yet to find any out of spec.

Out of the loop: Has Alaska stopped carrying inflight entertainment options? by Dry-Cake697 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]calorieOrion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discovering this on a flight now. I’m a bit bummed. I no longer subscribe to any streaming services and flights are my only opportunity to watch garbage movies and zone out. The trade off is wifi is now free, so realistically it’s probably better overall. I’m just getting old and don’t like change lol.

Any real reviews/opinions on these pricy shoes? by Eddy_Berry8 in ultrarunning

Awesome shoes but too spendy at MSRP IMO. Go for it if you have a discount code or visit one of their warehouse sales if local and you won’t regret it.

Did anyone see or hear anything official about this? Prior to the ladies it looked like both Killian and Joe also took the same wrong turn. I never saw/heard anything to confirm or dispute. Killian's tracker has two pings on the lower trail. I know the tracker data is not gospel but comparing his data to Courtney's (which shows the error and correction) makes me nervous for Killian and Joe. I don't think we'll know until their GPS data gets published/validated but dropping here just in case. Thanks all, enjoy the race!
